BASIC FIRST AID PROCEDURES

a. MINOR PUNCTURE, CUT WOUNDS OR BRUISES

1. Assess the severity of the wound.


2. Remove foreign body by cleansing it with hydrogen peroxide or Plain Normal Saline Solution. If needed, use
forceps in removing the foreign body.
3. Apply anti microbial solution or ointment, Betadine or Teramycin, before covering it with sterile gauze.
4. If needed, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the Physician.

b. AUTOMOBILE OR FALLING ACCIDENT

1. Call 168 for C3, 882-0851 for MMDA Rescue or 117 for DILG Emergency.
2. Clear the area for bystanders to control crowd and to promote proper ventilation for the victim.
3. Assess the severity of the accident before doing First Aid procedures or touching the victim.
4. Check ABC’s: Airway, breathing and circulation to know if artificial respiration (AR) or cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) is needed.
5. Immobilized the victim by placing him/her on a flat board or by putting a cervical collar.
6. Apply First Aid for wound and bruises. Control the bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound using
sterile gauze or clean cloth.
7. Do not leave the victim until Emergency assistance has arrived.

c. DOG, CAT OR RAT BITES

1. Assess if area is safe.


2. Call 168 for C3, 882-0851 for MMDA Rescue or 117 for DILG Emergency.
3. Assess the severity of the animal bite.
4. Wash the wound immediately with running water and soap.
5. Do not apply tourniquet or squeeze the proximal area from the wound. This may cause the affected area to
swell or might inflict additional pain to the victim.
6. Apply betadine or any anti bacterial ointment to the wound and cover it with sterile gauze.
7. Immediately, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the
Physician.
8. Do not leave the victim until Emergency assistance has arrived.

d. SNAKE BITE

1. Assess if area is safe.


2. Call 168 for C3, 882-0851 for MMDA Rescue or 117 for DILG Emergency.
3. Let the victim lie down, to slow down the spread of the venom.
4. Apply tourniquet, if bitten in the arm or leg.
5. Immediately, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the
Physician.
6. If medical assistance is unavailable, suck the venom out from the wound and spit it out.
7. Do not leave the victim until Emergency assistance has arrived.
e. UNCONSCIOUS VICTIM

1. Assess if area is safe.


2. Call 168 for C3, 882-0851 for MMDA Rescue or 117 for DILG Emergency.
3. Clear the area for bystanders to control crowd and to promote proper ventilation for the victim.
4. Assess the victim or what cause of being unconscious.
5. Let the victim lie down, feet slightly elevated. To normalize blood circulation.
6. Try to assess level of unconsciousness by talking to the victim.
7. If no response, check ABC’s: Airway, breathing and circulation to know if artificial respiration (AR) or cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is needed.
8. Immobilized the victim if needed.
9. If victim gain consciousness try to gather information prior to his/her accident.
10. If needed, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the Physician.
11. Do not leave the victim until Emergency assistance has arrived.

f. BLEEDING OR HEMORRHAGE

1. Assess if area is safe.


2. Clear the area for bystanders to control crowd and to promote proper ventilation for the victim.
3. Assess the victim or what is the cause of the accident.
4. Control the bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound using sterile gauze or clean cloth.
5. Elevate affected arms or legs.
6. Apply First Aid for wound and bruises.
7. Immobilized the victim if needed.
8. If needed, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the Physician.
Or call 168 for C3, 882-0851 for MMDA Rescue or 117 for DILG Emergency.
9. Do not leave the victim until Emergency assistance has arrived.

g. CHEMICAL BURN OR CONTACT

1. Assess if area is safe. Wear gloves, mask or goggles if needed.


2. Immediately remove the victim from the area to prevent too much exposure to the chemical.
3. Wash affected parts, for ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes, with water to dilute the chemical and to lessen the
effects of the chemical.
4. Assess the severity of the accident.
5. Refer to the MSDS of the chemical to understand better the proper procedure of treatment and effects with
regards to the exposure to the chemical.
6. If needed, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the Physician.

h. BURN

1. Assess if area is safe.


2. Assess the severity of the burn.
3. If superficial burn, wash it with water to decimate the hot effect of burn. Apply Burn ointment.
4. If the skin has opened or the clothing adheres to the skin, do not wash it with water; do not remove the
clothing to prevent skin breakage of the affected area. Immediately send victim to the nearest hospital or
clinic for further assessment and treatment by the Physician.
i. ELECTRIC SHOCK

1. Assess if area is safe.


2. Turn off the power source. If impossible, break the contact between the electrical source and the victim by
pulling the hair of the victim or cover hands with dry clothing or towel to prevent from being electrocuted too.
3. Assess the severity of the accident.
4. If unconscious follow the procedure in handling this kind of victim.
5. If needed, send victim to the nearest hospital or clinic for further assessment and treatment by the Physician.
