Five stages of communication

 Idea of a message
 Encoding
 Transmitting
 Decoding
 Feedback

1. Idea of a message –This is the 1st stage in which a person creates a desire to send a message
to a reciever.
2. Encoding – The 2nd stage of communication in which the person arranges the words /ideas in
there minds , this is also where the person chooses how to send the message to the other
person.
3. Transmitting – The 3rd stage of communication where the person transmits the message to
the other person via a choosen type of communication medium. This is either transmitted by
a verbal message or a non-verbal way like writing. In this stage the message could be
disrupted if a “ Noise “ is present during the transmission, in which case, the person
receiving the message might not get the true meaning or idea being sent to him/her.

*Non-verbal – message is transmitted either in a written form like a letter or via body
language.

*Noise – Any disturbance in transmitting the message during the 3rd stage of
communication. This is classified into 4 different kinds

1. Physical noise – both the sender and the reciever are distrupted by an
external force (ex. Loud noises)
2. Physiological noise – most commonly found when the sender doesnt
communicate properly either the voice is too low , the senders talks too fast
or sends the message too fast. This can also be found in the recievers side
usually in the form of a hearing or visually imparedness.
3. Psychological Noise – this is noise is cause when the reciever or sender is not
in the right state of mind or is emotionally disturbed
4. Semantic Noise – a noise that is common if both the sender and reciever
have different meanings to a word.

4. Decoding – The 4th stage of communication, in which the reciever gets the message and
decodes what the sender is trying to convey in their message.

5. Feedback – The 5th and final stage of communication, this is where the reciever gives an
answer to the message that was sent to them. This is also where it is determined if the reciever
understands the message that was given to them.
