where tradition is never nostalgic and innovation is paramount is
thus becoming a much called-upon catch expression to conceive

the reports of CSIL, the world market for luxury furniture and
furnishing is worth approximately USD 51billion at factory prices.

Raffaella Vignatelli, President of Luxury

Fendi Casa collection. “Born towards
the end of the '80s from the visionary
foresight of Alberto Vignatelli, the first
Fendi Casa collection proposed just a

Today, almost thirty years later, in
a market that sees various subjects
involved, it proposes a complete
lifestyle – made of sofas, armchairs,
tables, bookshelves and so on-able

houses and settings with uniqueness,
elegance and contemporaneity.”

She adds on, “Fendi Casa’s target

market is worldwide because it
refers to a niche of customers who
reside and have various properties
in prestigious contexts all over the
world. Fendi Casa collections are
much appreciated in the Gulf area
– United Arabian Emirates - as well
as in the Far East market including
China and India. At the same
time also the US market has been
registering a constant demand of
luxury goods. The South American
market (Mexico and Brazil), as well,
has been evolving a new aesthetic

manages to keep it so fresh everytime,
remarks, “Fendi Casa proposes three
new collections per year remaining true
to its unique mood of on-going research
and innovation. The freshness and
contemporary feel of each collection
stems from the continuous research of
new solutions in terms of design and
from a deep-rooted study of fabrics and
leathers. In addition Fendi Casa expresses
the evolution of Fendi maison’s creations
extrapolating tendencies, colours and

Collaboration with Italian

Artisans and Designers
Fendi Casa products are 90% handcrafted by
Italian artisans using traditional techniques.
Raffaella explains, “All workings of our collections
are handmade and handcrafted. They follow the
realisation processes of tradition, those that have
been handed down over time and that give a
unique value to the finished pieces. They refer to
the typical Fendi manufacturing process, faithfully
recalling to the great stylistic heritage, as in the
case of the Selleria stitching, expertly performed
by hand, stitch by stitch. A working example is
clearly visible in the Sabrina armchairs, enriched
with Selleria thread along the profile for a unique
tailoring result. The motif Damier is another
exclusive manufacture. It is a refined and detailed
raw-edge leather strip weave. A product requiring
great technical skills for the artisan arrangement
of strips cut one by one and then put together in
a woven pattern, as if they had been woven on a
loom. It’s used to enhance the headboards of beds
and sofa structures.”

decorative sensitivity and his evocative

the iconic style that always has

that one of the most interesting
features of Thierry Lemaire is the
extra-ordinary ability to join noble and
high quality materials – such as woods
and essences – with metals and other
solutions. It’s a highly formal and
rigorous design, as well as functional
and comfortable.”

Raffaella concludes, “Fendi Casa plays

an active role in contract projects.
Important projects regarding yachts,

being worked on at present.” Thus
Fendi Casa continues to create magic

Australian Furniture Industry Alarmed

by the Investigation on AZO Dyes

For years furniture has been the object of decoration, comfort and furnishing without any
hesitation but recent concerns have been raised about hazardous AZO (azote) dyes in clothing
and bed linen which now include textiles and leather. The Australian Furniture Association
(AFA) has invited the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to study the
possible threats caused by AZO dyes in clothing and bed linen to users. The ACCC will also study
the potential exposure to chemicals such as formaldehyde from bonded leather in imported
furniture.

Australian Furniture Association CEO, Patrizia Torelli in this

context said, "we take the potential exposure of families to
unacceptable levels of these harmful chemicals very seriously."

She further explained, "we believe further expert advice is

required to reassure consumers that their health is not at risk
due to any possible exposure to these imported products. We
have consulted with a number of accredited Australian suppliers
who give guarantees that their products meet stringent testing
and standards accreditation demanded of Australian made
products." Patrizia Torelli

AZO colourants are the

most important class of
synthetic dyes and pigments,
representing 60 - 80% of all
organic colourants. They are
used widely in substrates
such as textile fibres, leather,
plastics, papers, hair, mineral
oils, waxes, foodstuff and
cosmetics.

ACCC conducted a survey and
commissioned testing of articles that
are in direct and prolonged contact
with the skin. While the majority of
articles tested did not raise safety
concerns, a number of articles
were found to have unacceptably
high concentrations of carcinogenic
chemicals derived from hazardous
AZO dyes.

It has been noted that the risk of exposure increases with body heat, sweat or saliva. In all cases
identified by the ACCC the articles were imported from other countries.

Many consumer goods are dyed with highly effective AZO dyes. A small proportion of AZO dyes
contain, or can break down to form, a class of chemical substances referred to as aromatic amines
(including benzidine) which are hazardous to human health.

The imported furniture that might pose health risks include sofas, lounge suites, chairs and office/
desk chairs, ottomans, day beds, bedheads/side foot rails, foot-ends, blanket boxes/footlockers, tall
boys/chests of drawers, bedside tables, lowboys, and lingerie chests.

ACCC reports AZO dyes are a large class of very effective synthetic dyes used for colouring a variety of
consumer goods such as foods, cosmetics, carpets, clothes, leather and textiles.A small proportion of
AZO dyes contains or can break down to form a class of chemical substances referred to as aromatic
amines.

Neri & Hu on a Design Spree

Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu not only complete each other in their personal lives
but also make the better halves in the design industry. Recently they made the
headlines when this designer couple was invited to design the most prestigious Das
Haus 2015. After the unique interpretation by the Danish designer Louise Campbell,
characterised by a romantic purism, the Shanghai-based architects Neri&Hu is given
the responsibility to write the next chapter and lend a completely new and exciting
perspective to the design format of “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage”.

They are the most distinguished designer pair in China to have received many
accolades and recognition from worldwide and worked with many prestigious
brands in Europe such as MOOI, LEMA, Parachilna, Classicon, Gandia Blasco, Stellar
Works, Meritalia and BD Barcelona Design, the latter two were in collaboration
with Swarovski’s “SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS at Work” project. In 2014, UK Wallpaper
have announced Mr. Neri and his partner Rossana Hu as 2014 Designer of The
Year. In 2013, Mr. Neri was inducted into U.S. Interior Design Hall of Fame with
partner Rossana Hu. They also published and edited a book called ‘Persistence
of Vision’. The book is a beginning of a series of exploration on architecture
and urban issues in major cities in China.

DESIGNERS’ DESK

As Lyndon says, “we

have different strength,
and make up for each
other's weaknesses”,
this clearly shows how
they keep each other
motivated and inspired
and bring out the best in
each other. They believe
in the most natural
form of design and their
design is the reflection
of nature from wood
to plants, keeping the
design grounded. Prior to
starting his own practice
Lyndon Neri & Rossana Hu
with partner Rossana
Hu, Neri&Hu Design
and Research Office, he was the Director for Projects in Asia and an Associate for
Michael Graves & Associates in Princeton for over 10 years, and also worked in
New York City for various architectural firms.

Lyndon Neri is also a founder of Design Republic, a retail concept store based in
Shanghai. The flagship store design, created by Neri&Hu, earned the Perspective
Awards Best Interior Retail and the DFA (Design for Asia) Best Design of Greater
China.

DESIGNERS’ DESK
Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu in an interview with us talked about their journey
to success. Read on:

FAE: Your designs reflect a new modern Chinese aesthetic. What are the
sources of your inspiration?

Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu: We are very much inspired by the everyday,
the mundane and the ordinary. The very fabric of Shanghai as a city and the
everyday activities in and around the city is very much an inspiration. The
western architectural tradition form the basis of our education, but culturally
we are very much Chinese, and there are Influences particularly in our work
that’s located in China. We also like to examine local culture of our project so it
depends on the location of the project.

FAE: How did you decide to become a designer?

Neri & Hu: Professionally, it became natural at first

that we practice what we studied, but it also turned
out to be a thoroughly enjoyable profession. We love
all aspects of architecture and design, and with each
project it is like solving a new puzzle or going on a new
journey. It is very rewarding to see a project built and
take on its own life.

38 © Furniture & Accessories Europe Jul - Aug 2014

DESIGNERS’ DESK

FAE: Both you and Rossana have worked on

many noteworthy projects. Which one of them
has been your favourite or which one has been
most challenging?

Neri & Hu: The Waterhouse at South Bund and

Rethinking the Split House.

FAE: How and when did you plan to collaborate together for Neri&Hu?

Neri & Hu: We started our practice Neri&Hu in 2004. A lot of people suggested that we should have
an office of our own, but we were committed personally to our projects at MGA and had a real close
bond with Michael personally. Rossana first took off to have her first child. When I had to resign, it
was difficult emotionally for me, because I had put over 10 years of my life. Still, all designers will
one day take on their own wings, and it just was time to move on and start designing our own work.

DESIGNERS’ DESK
FAE: How do you enjoy working with each other?

Neri & Hu: It's convenient that we are married and live together… :) and also, we
have different strength, and make up for each other's weaknesses.

FAE: How has been your journey from a beginner to now one
of the well known brand in the world of design?

Neri & Hu: We don't think about past projects too

much, nor do we dwell on any of the honors and
awards much. It is nice to know that we have gained
an audience worldwide, and this assures that we may
not be doing a bad job. But it certainly does not make
us feel that we have accomplished what we would like
to accomplish. We look at our projects and we see too
many things that could have been better. There are so
many more types of projects we would like to do. We
also think we need to develop a more rigorous design
language that is uniquely our own.

DESIGNERS’ DESK
FAE: Tell us about the prize-winning re-design of an
industrial-style 1930′s building into the Waterhouse
Boutique Hotel. How did you go about the transition?

Neri & Hu: The architectural concept behind Neri&Hu’s

renovation rests on a clear contrast of what is old and
new. The Waterhouse also centre around two other main
notions: 1. inspiration of Long-tangs, or ‘lane houses’, 2.
the blurring of public/private space.
Long-tangs have always formed an integral part of
Shanghai. Houses in the city are traditionally small,
pushing domestic activities out onto the street and
creating a communal feel to everyday life. Even today,
houses in and around Shanghai attract a sense of
voyeurism, with tactically placed windows allowing
bedrooms, bathrooms and dining rooms to often be on
show to the public. The human tendency to exhibit,
common to Shanghai, has not been ignored in the design
of The Waterhouse where this notion is mimicked. Visual
connections of unexpected spaces force hotel guests to
confront with the local Shanghai urban condition where visual corridors and adjacencies in tight
Long-tangs define the unique spatial flavour of the city.

FAE: What kind of materials do you mostly prefer to use in your

projects and products?

Neri & Hu: Always fascinated by wood, for the sense of life it can
provide in a space, both in its visual quality and its tactility. We are
also exploring plants, living beings, as something to use for both
interior and exterior building material.

© Furniture & Accessories Europe Jul - Aug 2014 41

DESIGNERS’ DESK

FAE: What is your take on sustainability?

Neri & Hu: Research is the key. Trying to get the essence is the most important
and not to keep everything for the sake of keeping. When a building is being
reused, most of the time the typology changes so we have to take this in
consideration. We have to bring life into a building, and think of a way to
transform it to give it freshness and new purpose. Just fixing things to make
them exactly as they were is one way of looking at historical refurbishment,
but we like to try to inject a sense of modernity and
contemporary breath. To us, to present history within a
contemporary context makes a historic project successful,
as it allows the building to live in the presence of today.

FAE: How do you fuse both the consumer demand and your
style statement?

Neri & Hu: When you are passionate with what you do, a client can tell
and often it is not that difficult to persuade them even if they have strong
personalities or have other ideas. It is also important to listen to what the
needs and aspiration of the clients are. Strong communication is
imperative from the start. Yes we need to spend a lot of time to
educate and share with the client our thoughts and reasons for
doing things. Sometimes it is hard, but at the same time they may
be more open to new ideas since they don't come with strong
preconceptions.

linked to high visitor quality, something that was
confirmed by numerous exhibitors. Overall, the trade
fair was convincing with increased international
character resulting from a doubling of the non-
domestic exhibitor space compared to the première
of the trade fair.

“With this result, the Rooms Moscow/MIFS has

confirmed its position as the most important spring

a successful further development compared to the
première event”, summarises a very satisfied Cologne

The second edition of the Rooms Moscow/Moscow

Saturday, May 24, 2014. In total, 21,542 visitors
travelled to the Russian capital, a slight increase
compared to the previous year (2013: 21,120). The
space booked by international exhibitors actually
doubled. This pleased not only the visitors, but also
the organisers of the trade fair, Koelnmesse and
Media Globe Krokus (MGK). Both give a positive
summary. ‚All important commercial partners were
present with their customers. It shows that this
