Making mu ic with  our child can  e  o much fun for  oth of  ou, whether  ou’re  inging along to the

radio in the car, jamming on pla tic  owl “drum ,” or dancing to  ong  on  our iPod.  Plu , mu ic-
making help   our child’  development in man  important wa . The  e t part? You don’t have to have
a great  inging voice or pla  a mu ical in trument to have an impact. The  imple and enjo a le act of
making mu ic with  our child naturall  fo ter  important  ocial and emotional  kill ,  uch a   elf-
regulation,  elf-con dence, leader hip  kill ,  ocial  kill , and  ocio-emotional intelligence.

In fact, recent re earch[i] ha  found that pre chooler  who engaged in participator  group mu ic and

movement activitie   howed greater group cohe ion, cooperation, and pro ocial  ehavior when
compared to children who did not engage in the  ame mu ic activitie .  inging and dancing together

the  expre  them elve . The  al o get to practice working together toward  a common goal (e.g.,
when holding hand  while dancing). Re pect, colla oration, and working a  a team are all important
ocial  kill  for  our child to develop.

Making mu ic in a group al o challenge  children to watch the people around them for  u tle cue  to

timing, volume, and expre ivene —the  ame cue  that we u e for reading expre ion  and mood  on
people’  face .  eing a le to perceive and under tand people’  feeling  i  a  a i  for empath  and
moral development.
