Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class

This is a twelfth-grade government class of thirty-two students. One of these students has

mild ADHD, and five students' first language is Spanish, and we have one gifted learner.

II. Objective(s)

This lesson plan uses a "Learning Together" cooperative strategy. Given the textbook and

an hour class period, the students will read the chapter on presidents, and design a poster

board on two presidents of their choice. With eight total groups, sixteen presidents will be

covered by the end of the activity. They will be expected to provide a brief biography of

the president, his main values, his political party, and major political actions. Students

will be graded on a ten-point scale.

III. Procedures

Students will read the material together in groups of four, as well as create a handwritten

poster display of a brief biography of the president, his main values, his political party,
and major political actions. With eight total groups, sixteen presidents will be covered by

the end of the activity. Within an hour of class time, as much work as possible should be

accomplished. A comprehensive poster board should be completed with the topics the

teacher has given. If time allows, students are encouraged to draw pictures or examples

that aid in the delivery of the assignment. Students will present their posters at the end of

class.

IV. Materials

Class textbook, colored pencils/markers, glue, scissors, pen/pencil.

V. Grouping Structures

Eight groups of four students will each receive one score for their final product. Students

will be grouped fairly randomly, however, the teacher would try to put at least two of the

students whose first language is Spanish in a group together.

VI. Modifications

For the student with ADHD, they will be able to express their creativity on the poster if

they should feel restless. The teacher will try to put two Spanish speakers together in two

groups. The class is scattered with bilingual students, so the remaining student who

speaks Spanish will be put in the same group as a bilingual student. This grouping will

hopefully provide additional support for students who may need it. The gifted learner will
work among his other classmates. A slightly higher expectation will be set for the group

with the gifted learner, such as more detailed responses, a neater display, etc.

VII. Assessment

The students will be graded on a ten-point scale. A point for each topic (biography of the

president, his main values, his political party, and major political actions) on the first

president and the second president researched. Two points for the overall delivery and

neatness. A group will get one shared grade. By the end of the period, the class should

have a deeper knowledge of sixteen U.S. presidents. The teacher will be able to tell who

has a strong understanding based on the group's presentation to the class.
