Objective:
A course designed to introduce students to the use of industry standard computer applications used for solving
business problems. Career awareness, employment skills, and contextualized business problems represent the
theme of the course. Topics include an introduction to operating systems and file management; the use of word
processing software for purposes of creating basic business documents; the use of spreadsheet software for
touring data and solving mathematically based problems; and the use of presentation software to support the
delivery of effective presentations.

Grading:
A student’s grade is based on content mastery, analyzing and evaluating information, executing computer
application skills, and demonstrating decision making skills. The course grade will be calculated in Summit through
the following course work:

After completing this class, you will have the opportunity to take the Microsoft Certification test for Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and Access. Certification can help you earn college credits and enhance your resume with credentials
that are recognized by employers around the world. In fact, certified professionals report earning a 5.4% higher
average salary than their non-certified peers.

Business Professionals of America (BPA) Membership


BPA membership is not required, but it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. In order to be eligible to compete in BPA
Career Development Events, go on BPA trips, or participate in any BPA sponsored activity, you MUST be a member
of the club. Ask me about membership, I am a BPA advisor!

Class Rules:
1. Be respectful.
2. Be on task.
3. Leave food, drink, packs, hats, hoodies, cosmetics, and air pods outside.
4. Keep phones hidden.
5. Avoid social media and games.

Class Expectations:
 Workstations must be left tidy, in an orderly fashion each day. Violators will clean!
 Inappropriate computer use is NOT allowed. This includes sharing passwords, disconnecting components,
unsanctioned internet use, any form of bullying, etc.
 Plagiarism and cheating are NOT allowed. These are serious offenses and may result in failure of an
assignment/exam/course, in compliance with school policy.
 Students are always expected to follow the Columbia High School student handbook rules and
procedures. Failure to do so will incur serious consequences.
 This course and classroom will be conducted as in a business atmosphere in order to prepare students for
future working environments. This means demonstrating professionalism and work ethic.
Class Contract:

Business Computer Applications Academic Year 2019-2020

Mr. Phillips discussed classroom policy and the course outline with students. Students are required to sign this
behavioral contract for a class grade and class participation. Classroom rules and policies are included in the above
sections.
