ABSTRACT

Occupotional safety and health (OSH) deals with all aspects of health and safety in the
workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. Health as a state of
complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity. Next, Health Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC). Hazard
Identification is the recognising of things which may cause injury or harm to a person. Risk
Assessment is the looking at the possibility of injury or harm occurring to a person if exposed
to a hazard. Risk Control is the ways we control the hazard. We have choose UTHM Pagoh as
the place to the assignment and we decide to search the place that probably have hazard is at
Electrical Installation lab (MPE1) which is located at block B floor 2. We have an objective
doing the assignment which is identify the hazard at the lab, classify the levels of danger and
identify appropriate and effective ways to prevent the dangers at the lab. Next we do the step
to make a method to search the hazard. We create a safe checklist, check for tripping hazard
and keep the workplace sanitary. And the result we have found six (6) total of hazard which is
doesn’t have med kit, doesn’t have exit sign, doesn’t have fire extinguisher, not wearing safety
equipment and didn’t use the right equipment. So the suggestion is department of university
must to take more serious about the hazard and take an action to make sure that student can do
the lab study with peace.

1
INTRODUCTION

University Tun Husseion Onn Malaysia is another UTHM branch built in the Hub Education
Pagoh under the Ministry of Education Malaysia. There are various facilities provided in the
campus to give students as well as students to seek knowledge in a harmonious and conducive
environment. Some of the building blocks built inside the campus include administration
blocks, faculty workshops, lecture rooms and cafes for the convenience of students.

We have decided to do an assignment for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at UTHM
Pagoh which is the place that we study. UTHM has many places to do the assignment but we
have choose Electrical Installation lab which is located at block B , Floor 2.

Electrical Installation lab is one of the lab at UTHM. This lab is the place for students to study
especially students in electrical engineering course. Students use this lab to do the practical for
subject that they study. They use as a wiring project. The activities are involve students to use
electrical stuff such as wire and PVC and also use ladder to climb the high place.

2
OBJECTIVE

1) Identify hazards that found in “Electrical Installation lab 1” UTHM Pagoh

- Safety hazards.

- Health hazards

- Environment hazards

2) Classify the levels of danger at “Electrical Installation lab 1” UTHM Pagoh

- Provide priority to hazards based on hazard levels.

- Provide exposure on the impact of such hazards.

3) Identify appropriate and effective ways to prevent the dangers at “Electrical Installation lab

1” UTHM Pagoh

- Reduce the risk of injuries and accidents among Edu Hub Pagoh sports center users

- Create a safe and hazardous sports center environment.

3
METHOD

1) Create a Safety Checklist

Developing a comprehensive safety checklist is an important first step in creating a safer

workplace and serves as a solid foundation in identifying and recording potential hazards.
Before you create your checklist it is important to research the health and safety regulations
that apply to your state and then organize the regulations that pertain to your workplace. Once
this is complete work to create an easy to read template that can be easily accessed by
employees and managers for reference.

2) Check for Tripping Hazards

One of the most common causes of workplace injuries is trips and falls. These types of injuries
are expensive and often avoidable. Inspect your business room by room for slipping and
tripping hazards such as boxes or debris and signs of leaks. Once these have been identified
remove the hazard or in the case of the leak put up cones or other signage to warn employees
of the danger. Taking immediate action will reduce the chance of injury and ensure employee
safety.

3) Keep Your Workplace Sanitary

An unclean workplace can be a significant health and safety hazard. In fact, The Center for
Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year more than 20 million cases of acute
gastroenteritis are caused by Norovirus. Norovirus spreads quickly mainly by touching surfaces
or objects contaminated with Norovirus and then putting your hand or fingers in your mouth.
Keep your workplace sanitary and make sure that all restrooms are cleaned at least once a day.
Require employees to wash their hands after using the restroom and clean up after themselves
in the lunchrooms and cafeteria

4
RISK ASSESSMENT

Risk assessment is merely a method of analyzing the seriousness of a risk. There are two
approaches to analyzing identified risks, and they are the qualitative and quantitative methods.

In the first method, the Qualitative Analysis, all the identified risks are plotted on a matrix.
Each is given a position on the matrix chart. An example of the matrix can be seen below. The
probability of the risk occurring can be plotted on the horizontal bar, while the impact of the
risk can be noted along the vertical bar of the axis. The probability-impact value of a risk is a
product of both the values assigned for the risk. Hence, it can be seen that a risk with a value
of 9, where the probability and impact rate the highest, requires immediate attention. Those
with a P-I rating of 1 or 2 requires the least attention and may even be ignored, if insignificant

At times, it is not easy to be precise when drawing up measures of risk resolution with just
a generalized idea of a risk. In the process of making educated decisions, a quantitative analysis
is necessary. Quantitative risk assessment assigns numbers to risks based on various risk
reports and data generated. When compared to preset criteria, a valid decision can be made. A
clearer understanding of the quantitative risk assessment can be reached by following the
example on the next page.

Based on the results of the risk assessment and the judgement of the ‘risk evaluation’,
decisions are taken and policy is formulated. Risk evaluation is the process of weighting policy
alternatives in consultation with all interested parties considering risk assessment and other
factors.

5
By sample :

 Safety hazard
Safety hazards are unsafe conditions that can cause injury, illness and death
Example: Anything that can cause falls such as working from heights including ladder

 Health hazard
A potential source of danger to a person’s health
Example: Slipping because of messed up item on the floor

 Enviroment hazard
A potential to threaten the surrounding natural environment
Example: Light pollution

6
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Hazard
1) Doesn’t have exit sign
2) Doesn’t have med kit
3) Doesn’t have fire extinguisher
4) PVC mess up on the floor
5) Student is not wearing safety equipment
6) Didn’t used the right equipment

The most critical hazard is doesn’t have med kit in the lab. Med kit is the most
important thing must have at every lab because if something terrible happened, it can
be used as a first action for treatment to victim. So the effect if doesn’t have med kit is
the victim can be more serious and may cause to death. So department of facility in the
university must to take an action and make sure to provided the med kit at every lab at
the university. As example, someone get injured during doing activities at the lab and
doesn’t have med kit so people around cannot do anything to help the victim.

Furthermore, you might know that we will have a terrible problem when there is
a fire. As a victim that been trapped in the laboratory or store, of course it will cause us
to save ourself without think about anyone that are around which will cause the situation
getting worse. The real problem is when the fire extinguisher is not provided around to
we save the situation, so it is important to authorities to provided it and also make sure
the fire extinguisher is not expired so we can prevent the fire from continuing and could
save a meaningful life.

Lastly, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) which is used to encapsulate wiring work. The
PVC that have been cut should not be left mess up on the floor because it can cause
student and also lecturer or someone else coming through to that path will slipping and
get injured. Laboratory’s assistant need to make sure the workplace is clean at least
once a day. Student also have to clean up the workplace after doing the wiring.
7
RECOMMENDATION

Student doesn’t wearing safety equipment

-The student should wearing the safety equipment during on duty. Lecturer also must
make sure all student wearing the safety equipment. For example wearing glove to
avoid from get hurt or injured . Student also must wearing a safety boots to avoid from
slipping.

Exit Sign

-Department of university must make sure that all the exit path have a exit sign. This
can make student exit easily from laboratory if emergency happened or fire happened.

Med Kit

-Laboratory chief must apply med kit from department of university for each laboratory.
Each laboratory should have at least 1 med kit. Then, laboratory assistant must make
sure all the medic not expired.

Fire Extinguisher

-Laboratory chief must make sure that each laboratory have at least 2 fire extinguisher.
If small fire happened fire extinguisher can be use. After that, laboratory assistant must
make sure the fire extinguisher not expired.

8
Mess Up Material

-Lecturer must make sure that laboratory are in good condition, that means laboratory
are clean. Student also must make sure that all the tools and materials put at the right
place. PVC cant be mess up on the floor because it can cause student slipping and get
injured.

Student Didn’t Use The Right Equipment

-Lecturer must give a brief before start the activities so student can know what
equipment that they want to use. Lecturer also must to give an attention to student and
if student make a mistake talk to her nicely what the right that they want to do. This can
make student more alert and don’t do the mistake.
