Idiophones

Agong

- Scholars seem to agree that the origins of the agung are in Indonesia,
noting that the word agung/agong is derived from the Malay agong and Indonesian/
Java- nese ageng. Further evidence comes from a British explorer, Thomas
Forrest, who in the 1770s wrote Filipinos were “fond of musical gongs which came
from Cheribon on Java and have round knobs on them.

Barimbaw

-Barimbaw, a late 19TH century instrument, is made by a bamboo and is an


idiophone
Buray-dipay

-Bean-pod rattle; dry seed pod of the buray dipay plant, decorated with
red and black cotton thread.

Kulutang

-A pair of percussion bars which are struck against each other at


specific angles to produce a pitch. These sticks are a part of an entire ensemble
of kalutang which when playing together produce melodies. The instrument is cut
from the kwatingan tree which grows in Marinduque.
Kinaban

-Made of bamboo; the instrument is held horizontally with the bamboo


tongue in front of the opened mouth. The left end is hit by the thumb of the right
hand. This makes the bamboo tongue vibrate which causes a sound. The mouth
serves as a resonator and by changing the shape and size of the mouth opening, the
overtones can be changed, thus creating a melody. By strongly breathing in or out
the volume can be changed as well.

Subbing

-The subing is a bamboo jaw harp of the Cuyinin people of Palawan


Island in western Philippines. Despite their length of approximately 20-25 cm., the
actual functioning part of the subbing is quite small with a resultantly high pitch.
Usually subing are decorated and come with a bamboo case. This instrument was
collected in Manila in 1987.

Chordiophones

Batitiw

-A bamboo instrument from mindoro about 40 cm long ,played by


striking the split end of a bamboo against the left palm .
Kudlung

-Two stringed lute made of wood, one string for the melody, one for the
drone. Eight frets are glued on the neck of the lute. The body of the instrument is
carved with geometric patterns. The neck and the head are adorned with horse
hair; the tail has two (originally three) pieces of carabao skin; the strap is adorned
with bead work.

Kudyapi

-The kutiyapi, or kudyapi, is a Philippine two-stringed, fretted boat-


lute. It is the only stringed instrument among the Palawano people, and one of
several among other groups such as the Maranao and Manobo. It is four to six feet
long with nine frets made of hardened beeswax. The instrument is carved out of
solid soft wood such as that from the jackfruit tree.

Gitgit

- Gitgit = Gitgit is an instrument with a 3 or 4 strings made of human hair.


Aerophones

Budyung

-A short length of bamboo with both sides open. There are no holes on the
body of the bamboo. The flute is played by cupping the mouth on one end and
blowng creating a trumpet-like sound. The instruments is played solo for
recreation.

-Bamboo tube, closed at one end by a node (on the right on the picture).

Tangkap/piyu

-As you probably know, bamboo is a fast growing woody grass that forms
hollow, segmented tubes with an internal divider at each segmentation joint. In
other words, the perfect material for making whistles. There is an internal divider
at each joint. The stuff on the outside gets cut off.
