Mitosis/Meiosis Assignment

Part 1: (10 pts)

1. You will diagram mitosis. After you complete this, answer the following questions on a
separate piece of paper.
a. List each of the stages of mitosis and give major events that occur in each (can
indicate on the drawing instead).
b. How do the resulting cells, from each round of mitosis, compare with the starting
cells of that round in terms of chromosome type? Number of cells?
c. If each of the resulting daughter cells from step 3 went through the full mitotic
cycle 4 more times, how many daughter cells would you end up with?
d. In general terms, what does mitosis allow the body to do?
2. Start with a 1 cell containing 4 chromosomes. (It is recommended that this assignment
be done in color so that anyone can differentiate between the chromosomes.)
3. Draw the first cell from step 2 going through ALL 5 stages of mitosis discussed in class.
4. This assignment should demonstrate the power of cell division.

Part 2: (10pts)

1. You will diagram meiosis. After you complete this, answer the following questions on a
separate piece of paper.
a. List each of the stages of meiosis and give major events that occur in each (can
indicate on the drawing instead).
b. How do the resulting cells, from each complete round of meiosis, compare with
the starting cells of that round in terms of chromosome type? Number of cells?
c. In general terms, what does meiosis allow the body to do?
d. If one of the resulting daughter cells from step 3 were to unite with another
gamete, what stage in a life cycle would this represent?
e. First pretend that two of the resulting daughter cells from step 3 united and
underwent another round of meiosis. Second pretend this happened 3 more
times (a total of 4 times), how many daughter cells would result?
f. Briefly, how could you summarize what happens to a cell during mitosis
compared to meiosis?
 What purpose does this serve?
2. Start with 1 cell containing 4 chromosomes. (It is recommended that this assignment
be done in color so that anyone can differentiate between the chromosomes.)
3. Draw the first cell from step 2 going through ALL of the stages of meiosis discussed in
class (4 stages in meiosis I and 4 stages in meiosis II).
4. Make sure to label the type of cell (haploid or diploid) at each stage.
5. If you are feeling ambitious, try adding a crossing over component.
