The indefinite article is a or an.
The rule is really very simple. It depends on the sound at the start of the following word. (It does
not depend on the way we write the following word, it depends on the way we say it.)
a + consonant sound
If the following word starts with a vowel sound, then we say an:
• an apple
• an easy job
• an interesting film
• an old man
• an umbrella
The Importance of Sound
Normally, we pronounce consonant letters with a consonant sound, and vowel letters with a
vowel sound. But there are some exceptions. The rule about a or an is still the same. You
just need to think about the sound, not the writing. Look at these examples:
vowel letter but consonant sound consonant letter but vowel sound

THE PERIOD
RULES:
• She is here.
• The people who were waiting for you outside are here.
Use a period at the end of a command.
• The teacher asked why Maria had left out the easy exercises.
• My father used to wonder why Egbert's ears were so big.
Notice that when the period ending the abbreviation comes at the end of a sentence, it will also
suffice to end the sentence. On the other hand, when an abbreviation ends a question or exclamation, it
is appropriate to add a question mark or exclamation mark after the abbreviation-ending period:
Occasionally, a statement will end with a question. When that happens, it is appropriate to end the
sentence with a question mark.
In my opinion ,children should grow up in the big city for three reasons.
In the big cities children have more opportunities to study and in the future, they can working
in that. For example, when I was a child ,I used to live in a big apartment ,so I had many friends
in my apartment. The second reason why children should grow up in the city is that children
can gain more cultural experience. City children go to the museums ,theaters and cinemas. In
addition ,they have a better opportunity to see movies, shows and other kinds of
entertainment. In the countryside, there are not cinemas, theaters, museums,so children who
grow up there may not have the opportunity to enjoy these experiences. The third reason
is,there are more opportunities for city children to involve in activities. For example, city children
can join sports teams, dance classes or take an art course after school because there are many
such programs in a big city for children of all ages.In conclusion, the city is the best place a child
to grow up.
A good nurse has a lot of resposibilities .Firstly ,she has to take care of the patients.
Her responsibilities include changing clothes, bathing them, giving medicine at a definite
time. Moreover, she has to help whenever a patient calls her. Also, she is in charge of helping the patients’
walk and making their beds. She has to answer the telephone and she also carries the message to the
patients. Briefly, they are people that help to others and put all your heart in it.
Unity:
State the main idea of the paragraph in a clearly constructed topic sentence. Make sure each sentence is
related to the central thought.
Coherence:
Arrange ideas in a clear, logical order. Provide appropriate transitions to the subsequent paragraph.
Adequate development:
Develop your paragraphs with specific details and examples.
Elaborate:
Spell out the details by defining, or by clarifying and adding relevant, pertinent information.
Illustrate:
Paint a verbal picture that helps make or clarify your point(s). Well illustrated pieces are easier to read
and follow than those on a high level of abstraction.
Argue:
Give the reasons, justifications, and rationales for the position or view you have taken in the topic
sentence. Draw inferences for the reader and explain the significance of assertions or claims being
made.
Narrate:
Relate the historical development of the phenomenon at issue.
Process:
Describe how something works.
Describe:
Observe without preconceived categories.
Classify:
Organize phenomena or ideas into larger categories that share common characteristics.
Analyze:
Divide phenomena or ideas into elements.
Relate:
Show correlations and causes (beware of logical fallacies, however!)
A paragraph should be neither too short nor too long. A good paragraph in a Trinity exercise should be
5-6 sentences long. As a general rule, avoid single-sentence paragraphs. If your paragraphs run longer
than a page, you are probably straining the grader’s thought span. Look for a logical place to make a
break or reorganize the material. Indent each new paragraph five spaces.
