ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

In the era of fierce competition, mere theoretical knowledge is not enough to give what it takes to
scale new heights. An in depth understanding of concepts can be achieved by supplementing
with practical experience.

The following report Inventory Management in SCM is an honest and sincere effort on my part
to put into practice the concepts learned during my industry exposure. However, this project
would not have been possible without the guidance and support of my project guide, Mr.
Rajendra Singh, SCM Manager, who with his market know-how and experience guided me
from the very start.

Further I would also like to acknowledge the crucial role of Mr. Vijendra Kumar, (Production
Manager) for being the constant support during my summer internship. It is by virtue of their
valuable suggestions and mentoring that this project has materialized into concrete form.

SECTOR: MANUFACTURING

Assembling is the generation of items for use or deal utilizing work and machines, apparatuses,
compound and organic handling, or detailing. The term may allude to a scope of human action,
from handiwork to cutting edge, however is most normally connected to mechanical structure, in
which crude materials are changed into completed products on a huge scale. Such completed
merchandise might be offered to different makers for the creation of other, progressively
complex items, for example, flying machine, family apparatuses, furniture, sports hardware or
vehicles, or offered to wholesalers, who thus offer them to retailers, who at that point offer them
to end clients and purchasers.

Assembling building or assembling procedure are the means through which crude materials are
changed into a last item. The assembling procedure starts with the item plan, and materials detail
from which the item is made. These materials are then adjusted through assembling procedures
to turn into the required part.

Present day assembling incorporates every single moderate procedure required in the generation
and joining of an item's parts. A few ventures, for example, semiconductor and steel makers
utilize the term creation.

The assembling division is firmly associated with building and modern plan. Instances of
significant producers in North America incorporate General Motors Corporation, General
Electric, Procter and Gamble, General Dynamics, Boeing, Pfizer, and Precision Castparts.
Models in Europe incorporate Volkswagen Group, Siemens, FCA and Michelin. Models in Asia
incorporate Toyota, Yamaha, Panasonic, LG, Samsung and Tata Motors.

CHAPTER -2: INTRODUCTION TO TOPIC

18 | P a g e
Fundamentals of SCM
Supply Chain Management (SCM) is essentially integrating suppliers of commodities to the

consumers and it emphasis the need for collaboration to optimize the overall process of supply

chain in a systematic way. The basic goal of any SCM is to make the organization responsive

towards changing consumer preferences. This is done by capturing the data of material flow at all

levels of the value chain.

In present time Manufacturers faces many challenges in front of them because of greater product
variety, shorter product life cycles which cause's large fluctuations in demand and require high
responsiveness in supply chain and due to which need of shorter lead time continues. In
Manufacturing it is very necessary that every transaction is smooth, timely and accurate. When
any company is engaged in complex function such as Manufacturing it is very important that the
company should have a strong supply chain for improved responsiveness and cost effectiveness.

If a company is engaged in Manufacturing than its supply chain should be effective because,
firstly, an efficient supply chain management system can provide a complete 360-degree
feedback to the distributer as well as to the Supplier about the demand and complaints of any
particular product. Secondly,' it provides important insights on inventory and guidelines on
merchandise allocation. It also increases visibility for the replenishment of stock and
consumers demand for any particular product throughout the supply chain. For an efficient
supply chain collaboration and communication is necessary between the facilities and
supplier.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company believes in Quality so it is very important that its supply
chain is very will remain strong because Goodyear makes money when it reduced its cost,
improvement in other departments and supply chain is the one and Only area for maximum cost
reduction. It makes supply chain management very crucial area.

Warehouse
Warehouse is the facility which is used for the storage, it is the location to or from which the
inventories are being transported. Warehouses are the key functional driver of supply chain
performance in terms of responsiveness and efficiency. Location of the warehouse is very
important, so in order to determine the location of Warehouses we must keep the following
points in our mind:

 Availability of resources
 Size of the warehouse
 Design of the warehouse

In present time warehouse is treated as switching facilities rather than storage place and
company try to move stock from the warehouse as soon as possible to reduce the cost of
inventory handling, for high inventory turnover and for shorter cyclic time. It is most crucial cost
center and many customer problems are directly related to improper management of warehouse.

Crucial decisions for warehouse are:

 Facilities inside warehouse

 Warehouse layout

 Design of warehouse building

 Connectivity of warehouse

Warehouse's performance is measured in terms of customer's satisfaction and by lower cost of

operation.

Warehouse Functions:

 Storage of material
 Material Handling Function
 Handling of Information

22 | P a g e
Function of Material storage is required to accommodate:

 Holding of material
 Consolidation of material
 Break Bulk
 Packing
 Mixing

23 | P a g e
Inventory Management

Inventory exists in the supply chain due to mismatch between Supply and Demand. Inventory is
the source of cost in the supply chain. We could save cost by managing our supply according to
the customer demand. We must maintain minimum level of inventory for efficiently fulfilling the
customer's demand and we must outward the inventory from the warehouse in time so that we
will be able to send the stock to the distributers in time and the damage stock is also taking out
from the warehouse so that we could be able to maintain a healthy level of inventory.

Transportation

Transportation can be defined as the physical flow of material and finished products/goods from
its origin point to the point of use to meet customer's demand at a profit. It is very essential a
planning process and an information activity to be an integrated process that help in optimizing
the flow of material, products & goods through the organization and its operations to the
customer. It is very important for the organization to monitor how it delivers products, goods &
services to the end customer, whether the product, goods are tangible or intangible.

Any transport service is considered good if it provides:

 Reliable and consistent delivery

 Freight economy
 Minimum product damage during its movement

Job Description
Title of the job: Student intern in Manufacturing firm.

Department: SCM.

Summary: Major Job was of controlling incoming and outgoing stock. Inward the incoming

stock

and outward the outgoing stock. I was involved in stock control.

Key Responsibilities Area:

1.To make stock available as and when it is required:

Prime responsibility of an inventory manager is to always check that enough stock is available in

the warehouse so that it will be available at the time of need hence it also leads to wastage of

time due to shortage of stocks.

2. To utilize available storage space but prevent stock levels from exceeding

space availability:

Another key responsibility is to avoid storage of excess stock by preparing excel according to the

need of stock on daily basis, it’s very important to maintain a balance between actual need of

stock in a day and to make available the required stock through utilization of space.

3. To led down the inventory carrying cost:

To store the inventory in warehouse is one of the major cost which every company tried its best to

reduce so it’s the duty of the Inventory manager to led down this major cost.

27 | P a g e
4. End to end Quality and quantity check:
There are various levels of quality check in Goodyear –

(i) Fixture of compounds.

(ii)After making of tire.

(iii) Before final delivery.

5.Stock count and check from raw material to finished goods:

Another important work that what we order to supplier and what we get. This is delivery part from

supplier for manufacturing, Checking the packing weather it is proper or not or check for damages

also.

Working condition: My work was of dayshift, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Social Environment: Working condition in Goodyear is very good, people work with full
dedication.

Reporting: Report to Mr. Rajendra Singh (SCM manager)

28 | P a g e
CHAPTER - 3: JOB ANALYSIS

29 | P a g e
Job Analysis
There are mainly three major responsibilities which I have to do on regular basis:
1. Checking the delivery of raw materials from supplier
2. Warehouse management
3. Inventory management

Checking the delivery of raw materials from supplier

Loading & Unloading of Inventory

After checking the documents if all documents were find in order then unloading of stock start
from the vehicle under inspection of responsible person and security staff. Securities counts the
number of cartons received and match it with the total number of cartons mentioned in the
documents. Security staff also check that cartons are packed properly if there is any carton which
is open or not in proper condition the security count the total number of pieces in that cartons in
front of vehicle owner if it match with the number of quantities in that cartoon as mentioned in the
documents then it's okay otherwise they put remark on the documents.

1. Entry in security inward register:

After unloading the stock, security staff enters the details stock received in security inward register
according to the LR no. of received stock.

2. Stock count and check:

After the entry of stock in the security inward register, now it is the time to count the stock either
manually or with the help of SAP. Employee also check for any damage in the received stock that
the warehouse gets and if they find any difference between the quantity mentioned in invoice and
the actual quantity they get or if there is any damage piece, any it’s part missing or any bar code

30 | P a g e
problem associated with the particular product then they write that problem on the invoice to
inform vendor about the inappropriate reception of stock and pass it to the concerned person of the
warehouse.

3. Entry into SAP:

After completing counting the stock, it is time to enter the stock into SAP if counting is done
manually then by scanning each and every quantity the stock is entered into the SAP for the better
track of stock across the supply chain. If there is any problem in bar code that concerned person
in the in warding zone is dealing with like it is not read by barcode reader because of the scratches
on bar code or the particular bar code is not on the merchandise then the person try to find out its
article number by matching that product with the Other product of Category like a shirt of same
color, same size and same brand has common article number and when they find any such
merchandise then they enter its article number in the SAP manually and if they do not get any
merchandise then they put it away and inform about that particular pieces to the vendor.

31 | P a g e
Warehouse Storage Process

Storage is the most important part of the warehouse because we cannot store all our received
stock in store due very high property rents and every square feet of space is very costly in the
areas where stores are located and proper storage in warehouse is also essential in order to avoid
damages and for fast processing of stock. In storage process when stock is entered in the SAP
then it is moved to their respective section in which the stock is arranged according to their
category or MC code. Every item put in warehouse according to its type, color, brand and the
way it moves out of the warehouse like clothes are put in crates and shelf's racks for the fast
movement of stock.

I). Stock transfer note (STN)/Stock transfer order(STO) is drawn from SAP:

The movement of stock from the warehouse to the stores or to other warehouse is known as
stock transfer for this purpose store or warehouse raise a Stock Transfer Note (STN)/Stock
Transfer Order for warehouse according to the requirement of store or warehouse and
concerned person of extract this STN/STO from SAP.

2). Check availability of stock through SAP:

Before taking the printout of STN/STO from SAP the concerned person check that is there any
Other store with the requirement of the same product that already send the request for the stock
if that is the case then warehouse employee divide the stock between the stores according to
their requirement they mentioned so that no one get stock out for that product.

32 | P a g e
3). Pick list is made according to the STN/STO:

After checking the availability of stock warehouse concerned person generates a pick lists

according to the category or according to MC code of the category wise classified products

because there is separate MC code for men's jeans and separate code for lady’s jeans and

stock that is to be transferred is put in the warehouse according to their MC code so that it is

for the employee to pick the stock.

.
4). Employees pick item according to the pick list:

Now the pick list is given to the employee which are responsible for pick the stock in the
warehouse, they take that pick list and from the pick list they know where any particular
product is placed so they go to that particular section and pick the item according to their
article number which is written on the bar code of the item and then stuffed in a blank
carton and take it to the section from where outward is done.

5). Scan each item in SAP:

When pick stock reach in the section from where outward is done, a person at the outward
system enter Stock Transfer number/Delivery number and Handling unit which is L2000
for outward of stock/material in the SAP and then scan each item one by one and even if
any item which is not belongs to that STN/STO then a message in red font popped up in
the bottom of SAP window that will tell the person on the outward system that the
particular item does not belong to that STN and the person performing outward of stock
put that item away and tells the concerned warehouse employee to pick the item that this

33 | P a g e
is not the right product and would have to employee search again for right product? when
all items get scanned then they pack the items into the cartons put the right tag for the
store and STN no. On the cartons then the stock is ready for dispatching from the store.

6). Pre-Delivery Investigation of stock:

Before dispatching the stock from any store/warehouse to other stores, a pre-delivery

investigation is required to confirm that the item that need to be dispatched are in good

condition and it is not damaged. In this process a employee check for any defect in the

product that will outward and if they found any problem in the product then the stock will

not be dispatch to the store or to the warehouse.

7). Stock is packed:

When the pre delivery investigation of the stock is complete then the stock is put in the

cartons again, now it is the time to pack the stock to be outward and packaging staff pack

the cartons with the sheet of polythene so that cartons are not opened easily and sometimes

there damaged cartons also prevented from opening during transportation by this process.

After wrapping these cartons with the polythene. Person in the packaging staff weighs the

cartons and write their weight on them.

34 | P a g e
8) Documentation:
When stock is packed by the packaging staff then the warehouse person does the proper

documentation, so the movement of goods do not become a problematic task. Employee

put the STN/STO with gate pass which is very essential and required for outward

movement of stock without which security does not allow to pass the stock outside the

warehouse.

9). Outward Entry Register:

After all necessary documentation of the stock when it will be dispatch to load on the

transporting vehicle. At this time security person ask for the documents of outward

stock after checking and ensuring that all the document for the stock that is to be

outward are in proper order He make entry outward register for the outward stock.

10). Dispatch of Stock:

For dispatching the stock to the store the employee of the warehouse intimate
transporter about the requirement of the vehicle in advance so that the transporter
arrange the vehicle for transporting the stock on time for dispatching the stock
according to the requirement.

35 | P a g e
CHAPTER -4: LEARNING OUTCOMES

36 | P a g e
Job and Organization learnings:

1.Analyzing Quality checks:

Goodyear is known for the quality of their products. One of my major tasks there involved
checking the quality of tires at the gateway for distribution to various distribution channels and
territories. So I was taught various parameters on which the tires had to be tested. This was one
of my major learnings that included parameters of quality check and its importance.

2. End to end supply chain management:

Supply Chain starts from supplier and end to customer which involves order to supplier, delivery
from supplier, inventory of stock of various items, making components of tire, then quality
check, making of green tire, then molding it through machine, 2 nd quality check, if okay then
final inspection of tire if not then again go for production if remains productive if not it goes to
scrap, after final inspection, transported to the dealers and then to the customer.

3. Warehouse management:
Managing warehouse is important because it includes lot of cost (carrying cost and holding cost).
There are 3 types of goods:
1. Fast moving
2. Slow moving
3. Very slow moving

Fast moving goods are those goods which are high in demands and will move quickly like in
Goodyear ballabgarh plant, tire of tractor (standard size) is come under fast moving inventory,
very high in demand, then
Slow moving goods, tire of commercial vehicles like tire of truck, bus etc. are kept middle in the

37 | P a g e
warehouse then,
Very slow moving goods, tire of tractor (small in size) come under this, so these type of goods
kept in back due to low demand.

4. New and improved skills and how to apply them:

One of the most important things you can gain from an internship is new found knowledge. This
can include knowing how to fulfil tasks that are relevant to your desired career path and
sharpening the skills that you already possess.
Having work experience in Finance and doing Summer Internship in SCM is very different
requires more interaction from your superior to subordinate, coordination with other
departments, to avoid any conflict and loss in inventory or business one require proper
communication which can be easily understood by both the parties without raising any conflict
of interest or miscommunication, to avoid any loss.

38 | P a g e
CHAPTER -5: CONCLUSION AND
SUGGESTIONS

39 | P a g e
CONCLUSION

Understanding SCM is very difficult. It is very complex and long chain of many processes
starting from suppliers to customers.
Although be a BCom graduate study of production is very tough, but it was a good journey in
this Summer Internship I got to know 3 important aspects of Supply Chain Management which is
Inventory Management, Quality Checks and Warehouse management.
I face many problems like work overload, moving one department to another, maintain
coordination within workers and very important d3emerit id they are not providing the data due
to company norms but my Supervisor SCM Manager MR. Rajendra Singh Helped me a lot, now
I will work in operations with better knowledge of work.

40 | P a g e
SUGGESSIONS

1. Lake of training to lower level of employees:

Production level of employees are less skilled in terms of use of machines, they
have limited amount of knowledge about machines and providing training is not
the regular practice in the plant

2. Lack of forecasting of demand:

Daily production capacity is 5000 units and they are producing it in daily basis so
inventory level will be high so that inventory carrying cost and inventory holding
cost is also high therefore cost will be more.

3. Casual behavior of workers:

It’s a public company so all the employees are very casual sometimes they don’t
work properly and the supervisor also supports them for examples specially drivers
and workers in warehouse. They were so lazy that in loading the final goods to the
truck for transportation they spent whole day due to which other work will suffer.

4. Use of modern Machine:

There are machines but not in the proper maintenance and still there are two departments,
machines vs humans.
There are two machines for mixing the compound with rubber and other elements, always one
machines fail due to poor maintenance.

41 | P a g e
5. More focus on safety:

Safety is the most important feature and biggest responsibly of the management biut
management don’t take it seriously.
Let’s take one example:
In the mid of May, there was a worker from production department. He was not able to work in
the production because his shoe was damaged and due to safety issue specific shoe is given by
management, so on the same day the worker came with the issue that I am not able to work due
to broken shoe so I need another pair of shoe.
Management said okay we will arrange it soon but till 4 th day the worker did not get the shoe but
he is on the job so some problems:
1. management is not able to provide the shoe
2. production suffers
3. Increase the cost due to not productivity of employee.
