The benefits into changing your MAC address are varied, for example spoofing a MAC in
order to get access into a MAC filtered wireless network or copying the MAC address
registered in the cable modem in order to have Internet; you could even spoof your MAC in
order to receive a new IP from a DHCP server (network anonymity or bypassing a network
restriction).
In this example I’ll change my MAC in order to receive a new IP address and server
lease from the DCHP server.
First we execute the command prompt (MS-DOS) [run>cmd].
Once open we run the "ipconfig /all" command to see all the information of our network
adapter (See figure1).
Figure1
Here we can see very important information, we have the adapter’s description, the IP and the
MAC address, we’ll use this information later.
Now we start the registry editor (run>regedt32) once there we move to the key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972(...)}"
This key contains the configuration for network adapters and network emulators. Each file
(0000, 0001…) contains a different adapter, we browse until we find the network adapter
we’re spoofing the MAC too. (See Figure2)
Figure2
Translation for images: Right one (new>alphanumeric value) Left (name: NetworkAddress, value: spoofed
address)
We right-click on the value and select “modify”, now we input the desired fake address (12-
AB-34 or 12AB34 format) and save. Close the window so changes to registry takes effect.
Now we deactivate the network adapter and then re-activate it in order to change the MAC
address.
“Ipconfig /all” After changing the MAC Address, as you can see, the DHCP server gave me a
different IP and a new lease. You have spoofed the “unchangeable” hardware’s physical
address, the MAC address
