CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of The Study


According to Hordvanced (1995:662) that Language is a mean of communication.
Without communicating, the people can not do their activity well. Language itself
consist of the body language, gesture of sign. They are all meaningful. we can see the
traffic light in the main street that also kinds of communication. If we do not
understand this, our activity cannot run well and more it will be brake the law.in other
words, language is very important in human life. As international language. English
language is also considered as an importance language to be learned. May people
want to develop their speaking skill and make sure their children have good English
speaking.
Absolutely, Student have to produce and interact the language in any aspects of
their daily communication. Speaking is used for many different purposes. Each
purpose may be to make social contact with people to express opinions, to persuade
someone about something, or to clarify information. All learners in other countries
even Indonesia learners study English in order to develop proficiency in speaking.
The teacher needs to help student encourage student anxiety, motivate them to
learn better especially help the students to resolve the speaking skill problems, and
practice to developing their speaking ability. Therefore reason, some technique that
can be applied including role play because it encourages the students to be actively
participating in teaching learning process and many research findings say that this
technique is effective to use in teaching speaking. This technique also gives
opportunity to practice communicating in different social context and social roles. In
other word, this technique used I order to know the use English language and to get
speaking fluency. It is extremely important to emphasize that using role play is one of
the technique to achieve the aim in encouraging students to be keep using English,
especially mastering in speak of English.
In this case, the researcher is interested researching and analyzing the process
of teaching speaking by using role play at the 11 grade of SMA N 3 Sukoharjo.
Because in this school, the students poor in English speaking skill and looks like less
enthusiastic in learning English further in speaking because of the traditionally
technique.

Based on the reason above, the researcher carries out a study entitled “The
Effectiveness of Role Play on Speaking Skill in 11th Grade SMA N 3 Sukoharjo”.

B. Limitation of the study


The writer limits the study of this research in the effectiveness of role play on student
speaking skill at the 11th grade of SMA N 3 Sukoharjo.

C. Problem Statement
Based on the background of the study, the problem of the study are formulated as
follows:
1. Can the role play be effective in speaking lessons ?
2. Is there any significant difference score of the student before and after they
are taught by using role play ?

D. Objective of The Research


1. To find out that using roleplay in teaching is quite useful or not .
2. To find out whether there is signifivance difference score of the student
and after being using role play.

E. Benefit of The study


The result of this study are expected to provide information for three people, they are:
1. The Teachers
The result of this can inspire them in having many selections of media in
teaching speaking that can enrich the quality of teaching speaking
2. The Students
The result of this study will help and give an opportunity for student to get
active learning and solve their problems in mastery speaking skill
3. Further researcher
Finally, these finding of this study can be use other researcher who are
interested in English to get useful information
