Abstract:

This lab task was performed to dye 100% cotton fabric with Hot Reactive Dyes by
exhaust method. The coloring (dyeing) of a fabric is a very basic element for
marketing of the fabric. Dyeing is the process of imparting color to the textile
material like fiber, yarn fabric etc. Color of any fabric is its first element to which
the consumers respond; a fabric is often selected or rejected due to its color appeal.
Therefore, a good color or dye is necessary to apply on the fabric to create its
demand. There are many types of dyes (dyestuffs) which are used in dyeing the
fabric. The hot reactive dyes are used for dyeing purposes; they are less reactive as
compared to the cold reactive dyes and need high temperature for good fixation.

Objectives:

1. To understand the method of dyeing a 100% cotton fabricwith Hot Reactive

dyes by Exhaust method.

Equipment, tools and materials:

 Measuring Cylinder
 Stirrer
 Small Iron Tub
 Electronic Weigh Balance
 Sequestering Agent (Chelating Agent)
 Wetting Agent
 Common saltSoda Ash (Na2CO3)
 Hot reactive Dye
 Liquor (laboratory water)
 Precision Electronic Balance

Procedure:

The liquor ratio of 20:1 was taken. 100% cotton fabric was weighed and performed
calculations to prepare the solution. The cotton fabric was weighed and solution
was then prepared according to recipe ingredients. Small iron tub containing
solution was placed in to water bath allowing it to reached at 90*C. The cotton
fabric was dipped into the solution and stirred thoroughly for 45 minutes. Later the
cotton fabric was washed.

Calculations and Observations:

Weight of the Fabric sample (Knitted) = 3.81g

Liquor = 76.2mL

Weight of the hot reactive dye (Shade depth) = 0.1524 g

Amount of common salt= 3.048 g

Amount of Sequestering agent = 0.152 g

Wetting agent = 0.152 g

Soda Ash = 1.905 g

Safety measures:

 Use gloves while making solution.

 Deal carefully with electric parts of water bath.
 Avoid parallax error while measuring ingredients.
 Avoid human error while performing calculations.
 Make sure that temperature must not exceed 90*C.

Conclusion:

The results found was analyzed visually. The experiment conducted, dyed the
fabric by using the dark pink color hot reactive dye, common salt and soda ash
solution. The sodium chloride was added to increase the exhaustion. The fabric
obtained after dyeing had a good adhesion with the dye stuff and color did not
remove after the washing of the fabric.
