Lesson Idea Name: Factoring Polynomials

Content Area: Algebra 1/2
Grade Level(s): 9-12

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.N.CN.1 Understand there is a complex number i such that i2 = −1, and every complex number
has the form a + bi where a and b are real numbers.
MGSE9-12.N.CN.2 Use the relation i2 = –1 and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties
to add, subtract, and multiply complex numbers.
MGSE9-12.N.CN.3 Find the conjugate of a complex number; use the conjugate to find the absolute value
(modulus) and quotient of complex numbers. Use complex numbers in polynomial identities and
equations.
MGSE9-12.N.CN.7 Solve quadratic equations with real coefficients that have complex solutions by (but
not limited to) square roots, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.
MGSE9-12.N.CN.8 Extend polynomial identities to include factoring with complex numbers. For
example, rewrite x2 + 4 as (x + 2i)(x – 2i). Solve equations and inequalities in one variable
MGSE9-12.A.REI.4 Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
MGSE9-12.A.REI.4b Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x2 = 49), taking square roots,
factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula, as appropriate to the initial form of the
equation (limit to real number solutions).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Popplet is a web-based BBPT, which means that students can access it from a computer outside of
school as well as a phone or iPad through the app. The website allows students to choose their language
preferences, so ELs have the flexibility to choose a language that best suits their needs. In addition,
Popplet allows users to upload videos, links, pictures, and graphs, so students have the ability to make
their concept map their own by utilizing all kinds of representation so they are not stuck with solely
using text to express their ideas and what they have learned. Students also have the ability to change the
background color, font size and color, and zoom in on different areas of the concept map which is helpful
for students who need a visual aid as well as students who want to express their creativity.

Lesson idea implementation:
For this lesson idea, I plan to implement it at the end of the unit so students can represent their
knowledge and understanding through a concept map. Not only is this a good way for students to
further develop their understanding of the material, but it is also a helpful way to organize and connect
all of the information and get it down in a unique and engaging way. After we complete the factoring
unit, I will have students use a review day to create their concept maps. I will give them guidelines of
what they must include (such as all of the different options for factoring, how they know when to use
which one, what the factored form looks like, written examples, etc.) and give them the whole class block
to complete it. I will walk around the room during this time to answer questions and make sure students
are engaging in the task.

In order to assess the students’ learning, I will give them a factoring review and allow them to use
their concept map to complete it. If they were unable to successfully complete the review, I will
encourage them to make changes or additions to their concept map so it can be a more beneficial
resource for them as they study. After these changes are made, I will have them submit their concept
maps to me so I can review it and assess their understanding by making sure all of their information is
correct and the examples they created are correct. While I will have some guidelines they must follow in
terms of content on their concept map, students have the creative freedom to display the information
how they want. This gives them the opportunity to make it their own and express themselves through
their concept map.

Reflective Practice:
I believe that this lesson will promote student engagement and understanding because Popplet is a
very unique way to have students express what they know. I think students will be excited about this
assignment and take advantage of the creativity aspect. Since they will know that this task will help
them with the factoring review as well as reviewing for the test, I think they will take the time to make
sure they are creating a quality product that benefits their knowledge and understanding of the material.
