Lesson Idea Name: Inverse Functions

Content Area: Algebra II
Grade Level(s): 10-11

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.F.BF.4 Find inverse Functions
MGSE9-12.F.BF.4a Solve an equation of the form f(x)=c for a simple function f that has an
inverse and write an expression for the inverse. For example, f(x)=2(𝑥 3 ) or f(x)=(x+1)/(x-1) for x
 1.
MGSE9-12.F.BF.4a Verify by composition that one function is the inverse of another.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity provides options for comprehension by using background knowledge students
should already know, as well as guides information processing, visualisation and
manipulation. It also provides options for physical action by varying the methods for
responses and navigation of the assignment. Additionally, it provides options for recruiting
interest by optimizing individual choice and autonomy and optimizes relevance, value, and
authenticity.
Lesson idea implementation:

At the beginning of class, the teacher will review OneNote to make sure that all students
understand what they’re doing. The teacher should then be able to walk around the room
and help students through the activity as necessary. This activity will be used as a quiz review
for inverse functions so students should already know any basics regarding solving inverse
functions and graphing them. This activity will require students to create a quiz in OneNote
to be shared amongst their classmates for them to take.

This activity will be given during class and take roughly 30 minutes of a 55-minute class. At
the end of class each student will “turn in” (teacher should have access to the OneNote
already) their homemade quizzes and their solutions for the teacher to assess and use to

create a differentiated assignment, and then use to pull from for test questions. This activity
will require students to apply the knowledge they already know in order to create their
equations, and solutions.

The lesson will conclude by assigning each student a quiz by one of their classmates to be
completed with the use of their notes only, and feedback of the activity will be provided
during the next class day and on the work that students turned in.
Reflective Practice:

After the lesson, students should have a deeper understanding of inverse functions, and how
they can be created and solved. The lesson could be extended by using the questions from
each quiz to put on the unit test.
