DATES & QUARTER 2nd Quarter
TIME:

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic
expressions, the properties of real numbers as applied in linear equations, and
inequalities in one variable.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to model situations using oral, written, graphical, and
algebraic methods in solving problems involving algebraic expressions, linear
equations, and inequalities in one variable.
C. Learning Competencies/ The learner adds and subtracts polynomials. (M7AL-IId-2)
Objectives:
Write the LC code for each

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson or Tell whether the given expression is a polynomial or not. If it is a
Presenting New Lesson polynomial, determine its degree and tell its kind according to the
number of terms. If it is NOT, explain.

3. x

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson Activity 1

Familiarize yourself with the tiles below.

Stands for (𝑥 2 ) Stands for (𝑥 2 )

Can you represent the following quantities using the above tiles?
1. x – 2
2. 4x +1

Activity 2.
Use the tiles to find the sum of the following polynomials;
1. 5x + 3x
2. (3x - 4) - 6x
3. (2𝑥 2 – 5x + 2) + (3𝑥 2 + 2x)

C. Presenting Examples/ Instances of the Rules for Adding Polynomials

Lesson To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms. To combine similar
terms, get the sum of the numerical coefficients and annex the same
literal coefficients. If there is more than one term, for convenience,
write similar terms in the same column.
Example:
Perform the operation.
1) Add 4a – 3b + 2c, 5a + 8b – 10c and -12a + c.
4a -3b +2c
5a+ 8b -10c
+ -12a +c
--------------------
-3a +5b -7c

2) Add 13𝑥 4 − 20𝑥 3 + 5𝑥 − 10 𝑎𝑛𝑑 − 10𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 4 − 15𝑥 +

10
13𝑥 4 − 20𝑥 3 + 5𝑥 − 10
−8𝑥 4 − 10𝑥 2 − 15𝑥 + 10
___________________________________________
5𝑥 −4 − 20𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 − 10𝑥
D. Or Discussing New Concepts and Rules for Subtracting Polynomials
Practicing New Skills #1 To subtract polynomials, change the sign of the subtrahend then
proceed to the addition rule. Also, remember what subtraction
means. It is adding the negative of the quantity.
Perform the operation.
1) 5x – 13x = 5x + (-5x) + (-8x) = -8x

2) 2𝑥 2 – 15x + 25
- 𝑥 2 + 12x – 18
_____________

3) (30𝑥 3 – 50𝑥 2 + 20x – 80) – (17𝑥 3 + 26x + 19)

E. Discussing New Concepts and
Practicing New Skills #2
F. Developing Mastery Perform the indicated operation.
(Leads to Formative Assessment) 1) 3x + 10x 6) 10xy – 8xy
2) 12y – 18y 7) 20𝑥 2 𝑦 2 + 30𝑥 2 𝑦 2
3 3
3) 14𝑥 + (-16𝑥 ) 8) -9𝑥 2 y + 9𝑥 2 y
3 3
4) -5𝑥 -4𝑥 9) 10𝑥 2 𝑦 3 – 10𝑥 2 𝑦 3
5) 2x – 3y 10) 5x – 3x – 8x + 6x
G. Finding Practical Application of The width of a rectangular garden is 2x-7 feet and the length is 3x+8
Concepts and Skills in Daily Living feet. Write a polynomial that represents the perimeter and then
evaluate this perimeter polynomial if x is 5 feet.
H. Making Generalization and To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms. To combine similar
Abstractions about the Lesson terms, get the sum of the numerical coefficients and annex the same
literal coefficients. If there is more than one term, for convenience,
write similar terms in the same column. To subtract polynomials,
change the sign of the subtrahend then proceed to the addition rule.
1) What is the sum of 3𝑥 2 – 11x + 12 and 18𝑥 2 + 20x – 100?
2) What is 12𝑥 3 – 5𝑥 2 + 3x + 4 less than 15𝑥 3 + 10x + 4𝑥 2 – 10?
3) What is 10𝑥 3 +𝑥 2 + 5x + 2 less than 154 - x + 8𝑥 2 – 9?-
