STATION 1: MARY SHELLEY BIOGRAPHY
Read about Mary Shelley , the author of

Frankenstein, by typing “Mary Shelley bio” into
Google. Click the link from Biography.com and
read the short biography. There is a quick video
you can watch, as well. Next, answer the following
questions on your response sheet:
1. List THREE interesting facts that you learned about
Mary Shelley.
2. Do you think her background influenced
Frankenstein in anyway? How do you know?
STATION 2: HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Read “The Birth of Frankenstein” in the graphic
novel (pages 136-137) and the prologue (page 6).
Next, answer the following questions on your
response sheet:
1. How did the time period and specific events
that Shelley experienced shape the writing of
Frankenstein?
2. Can you think of other times in history that
would have helped inspire other pieces of
literature? Provide an example or two.
STATION 3: FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Flip through the novel and look at the images and

text. Next, answer the following questions on your
response sheet:
1. What do you already know about Frankenstein?
2. What do you want to know?
3. What do the images in the novel make you
think the story will be about? Explain your
answering providing specific examples that
helped you come to this conclusion.
STATION 4: THEME PREVIEW
Take a look at the following topics that are covered in

Frankenstein. Select 3 topics and write a possible theme
statement that would fit with the novel. Remember, a
theme statement is a complete sentence that is the
message that the author wants the reader to take away
from the story. Write your theme statements on your
response sheet.

STATION 5: CHARACTER PREVIEW
Look at the characters on pages 4-5 in the

novel. Select four characters that you are
intrigued by and answer the following on
your response sheet:
1. Write a brief bio of the character
providing physical description and a few
bits about their personality.
2. What will each character’s role be in the
novel? Villain? Hero? Explain.
REFLECTION
After completing the activities today,
reflect on what you’ve learned. Are
you excited to start Frankenstein? What
did you find most interesting about
what you learned? If you are feeling
unsure about starting the novel, or you
don’t feel interested in it, explain that
too!
