Introduction

A solo parent is a person who raises a child or children without a partner. Being a single
parent can also be the same as co-parenting which is when both parents agree to have an equal
share in the child-rearing even though they are no longer together. One may find themselves in a
single parent situation for a number of reasons including divorce, break-up, death of a parent,
abandonment by one parent, single-parent adoption, artificial insemination, or perhaps the
paternity of the child/children is unknown.(Jabines)

The subanen solo parent faces some unique challenges and should always be ready to
tackle them and maintain a happy family. The main challenge is how to influence a child’s
growth and development positively without the child being affected substantially by the absence
of the other parent. This, therefore, raises the stakes of single parenthood in owing to that sole
responsibility bestowed on a single parent that is, usually, shared by both parents in healthy
parenthood. MEJICA

In this cases, parents lifestyle impact so much on the behavior of the children, especially,
if these parents singlehandedly raise their children. The idea of single mother is a very sensitive
issue in family system. It brings risk factor for emotional and behavioral problems in children
and adolescents.(Inatay, Lifestyle Domains of Single Parents, 2003.) Mendoza

Solo parents responsibility becomes enormous specially when the parent is not receiving
alimony or child support from an ex-spouse. It, therefore, calls for stringent budgeting aimed at
reducing the overall expenses in order to make ends meet. Most single mother volunteer to work
over time or take on additional part-time jobs in pursued of financial security it is always
important for such parents to make the children understand their economic status and personal
responsibilities. Quality time with the kids is limited because the parent is strained between
responsibilities that make him/her chronically fatigued. It is important that such a parent find
time to get enough rest and recuperate lest takes period depression and burn out, and this may is
easily cause hopelessness in life on the parent. MEJICA

Children in solo parents homes are also more likely to experience health-related problems as
result of the decline in their living standard, including the lack of health insurance. Later, as
children from single-parent families become adults, they are more likely to marry early, have
children early, and devorce.(Mauldin, 1990). Jabines

Parenthood is challenging under the best of conditions. With one parent, the challenges
are multiplied. Coping with childrearing for single parent becomes more difficult because of
responsibility overload, with one parent makes all the decisions and provides for all of the family
needs; task over-load, when the demands for work, housework, and parenting can be
overwhelming for one person; and emotional overload, when the single mother must always be
available to meet both their own and their children’s emotional needs. Alone or in combination
these result in problems for the single mother, including loneliness, anxiety and depression.
MENDOZA

According to (Goldscheider and Waite 1991) One difficulty is asking for help in a society
that defines the family as an autonomous unit responsible for its own circumstances and well-
being.MEJICA However, few subanen solo parents can successfully raise children alone,
despite the social expectation that noncustodial parents (usually the father) should only be
responsible for supplemental financial support, while the custodial parent (usually the mother)
takes on both parenting and economic roles. According to (Bigner) the control of children's
behavior by parents reflects the increased involvement of traditional instrumental qualities in the
parenting role over the years.MENDOZA These traditional qualities include: domestic duties,
meeting child's physical needs, training of the child, performs moral education and disciplines
the child. With this the exercise of control on children's behavior come in, a mother's control
requires the expression of assertiveness in making certain decisions about what controls to use.
Mothers are known to use a certain kind of method of control, popularly known as love-oriented
methods. This technique focuses on positive methods of control, such as praise and reshaping of
children's behavior. Love oriented methods bring about children who have developed a strong
sense of responsibility for their behaviors and to have feelings of guilt and sorrow when they
have done something wrong.(JABINES)

Subanen solo parents might not be the ideal environment in which to bring up children,
but if that solo parent provides cheerful stability and appropriate modeling, and is one in which
love and acceptance are positively displayed, the it is a far better environment for young children
than a two-parent family where bitterness and hostility are constantly present.Jabines
MATERIALS AND METHODS

Methodology

This study is a qualitative in nature to determine the impact of Subanen Solo

Parent in raising children alone residing at Geographically Isolated Disadvantage Area in
Tudela, Misamis Occidental. The group will be using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD)

the topic and why they hold certain opinion, second they are useful to obtain detailed
information about personal and group feelings, perceptions and opinions and lastly, to
allow easier participation of the Subanen groups because they are settling in the
GEOGRAPHICALLY ISOLATED DISADVANTAGE AREA (GIDA). This method
serves to solicit participants, attitudes, perception, knowledge and experience, practices,
shared in the course of interaction with the different people.

Research Respondent

of Tudela also tells that a group of people was sentenced to have their tongue cut off
because of their false accusations against the Spanish government. The first syllable of
Tudela was derived from the Spanish word todos, meaning all (the convicted),
and dela of the native dialect, meaning tongue.
Tudela is widely known for its colorful Binalbal Festival, where many revelers
are clad in very gory costumes like a giant Halloween costume party.[4] It is held every
New Year's Day (Jan. 1).[5] Close to the border of Tudela is the eco-tourism
attraction Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP), which is located in Sinacaban,
its neighboring town to the north.
Tudela is bounded on the north by the municipality of Sinacaban, to the south by the
municipality of Clarin, to the east by Iligan Bay, and to the west by the municipality
of Don VictorianoChiongbian and Mount Malindang. It is 20-minute drive
from OzamizCity to the south, and 45-minutes drive from Oroquieta City to the north.
And it consist of 33 Barangays. There are five (5) GIDA area namely Barangays:
 NAMUT
 GALA
 MITUGAS
 COLAMBUTAN BAJO
 COLAMBUTAN SETTLEMENT

Research Instrument/s

widow, solo mothers abandoned by Husband, Unwed Solo Mother, Solo Father
abandoned by wife and Solo father widow where the researchers are usually faced
with a situation in a small potential of participations among the respondents and yet
the research design requires the topic it must be discussed in a group.

Step 5. Conduct the Focus Group
a. Explain the purpose of the focus group discussion
b. Facilitator should keep the discussion focus on the topic investigated
c. Evaluation should attempt to bring everyone into consideration
Step 6. Transcribe focus group
Step 7. Analyze and transcribe
