ANTHONY NAZARENO
Nazareno + Guerrero Design Consultancy

The Nazareno + Guerrero Design Consultancy, established in 1998, strives in creating new and
innovative solutions for its various projects. This is made possible due to the extensive local
and international design experience of its Principal Architect, J. Antonio Nazareno and his
partner, Arch. Christian Guerrero.

A graduate of the California College of the Arts in Berkeley, Anthony started his design career
in San Francisco with celebrated modernist architect Jim Jennings. He later joined Li-Saltzman, a
leading New York architecture firm specializing in the preservation and conservation of
landmark architecture. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Christian has more than
two decades of experience in the design and construction industry. Prior to establishing
N+GDC with Anthony, he led a team of architects under Japanese disciplines of design to
become one of the more respected architects in the country today.

Anthony, Christian and their team of Architects and Interior Designers at N+GDC continue to
work on numerous projects in the Philippines and overseas, instilling in them their unique and
efficient solutions in Architecture and Interior Design

With a heavily geometric and linear aesthetic, Nazareno and his firm have been making waves

DENISE DE CASTRO
DDC Architectural Studio
DDC designs experiences through our ideas, objects, places, buildings, and communities. We
focus on curious and rigorous research-driven, user-centric, and sustainably focused design.

We integrate general design consultancy; planning; architecture; interior design; furniture and
product design; and branding fundamentals to maximize interdisciplinary cross-pollination in our
practice. We design at all scales from the micro to the macro, with the focus of creating value
purposeful design experience in mind.
Our process is highly collaborative. We work closely with our clients to understand their needs
and visions. Combined with our experience in these multiple disciplines, our collaborative
strategy enables our studio to offer innovative and seamless design experiences and solutions to
our clients that inspire people to think, feel, and engage more deeply.

Working on both a macro and micro scale, de Castro takes the most conceptual studies and
turns them into full-scale works of art. Adept at large-scale site plans to smaller-scale details
such as lighting, her work stands out from the inside out.

JASON BUENSALIDO
Buensalido Architects

We started in 2006, with the commitment to introduce fresh, bold, and innovative concepts to
Philippine design setting. Our philosophy is inspired by the “random responses” of life. Life is
filled with an endless array of disparate events and elements, and we perpetually try to make
sense of it by piecing everything together. How we are able to combine these elements
determines the significance and fulfillment of one’s life. Only then will we perceive and
appreciate the juxtaposition of different elements. The same theory is applied to our designs,
through unique and unusual design compositions; “random responses” to specific contexts
become a design strategy.Balance between the different components is achieved to form a
coherent whole, one that marries intelligence and imagination. This design nature creates an
exciting, vibrant, and forward-looking aesthetic. With our distinct creativity and vigor in all of
its endeavors, we hope to uplift the current state of design in the country.

In 10 years, Buensalido’s work has come to be known for its innovative concepts and forward-
looking aesthetic. Fun seems to be a common theme in many of his projects, with wildly
engaging forms and interiors that shift our idea of space.

Philippine architecture in 2006 finds itself at the edge of another construction boom. The
problem today is not so much how to project Philippine architecture abroad as it is to project
itself into the consciousness of contemporary Filipinos.

Filipino architects are generally invisible. Almost no Philippine designer is a household name.
This is because of the commodification of the whole process of making houses. These are
known as "housing products" (the term used by developers), designed anonymously and built
by model number or mass produced like burgers and fries.

Up-sizing these "products" for the upscale market entails the slapping on of a brand. Usually
the name of some foreign architect, planner, landscape architect or interior designer is
plastered all over media to make the development more sellable. Blame this on real estate
executives, marketing heads or advertising creatives without cultural souls or social
consciousness – slaves to a colonial mentality that forever relegates anything or anyone Filipino
as inferior.

Where are the 30,000 or so Filipino architects and affiliated design professionals? They are
invisible, save to their immediate relatives or project managers of real estate development
firms who are tasked to produce the best product with the least budget (cheap but good) and if
there was a budget, to pay a foreign consultant premium fees, which more often that not cut
into the local consultants’ fees.

The only thing that was visible during Architecture Week last week was a rather plain whole
page ad paid by the architects’ organizations informing the public about the dangers of hiring
unlicensed architects and the existence of RA 9266, the Architecture Act of 2004, which
controls the practice of the profession (similar laws cover the allied arts of environmental
planning, landscape architecture and interior design).
