Stages of the lesson activities:

Organisation
Time: 2 minutes
Activity 1: Warm up
Aim: -to introduce the students into the atmosphere of the lesson
-to attract students’ attention on the topic
Interaction: T-Sts
Time: 5 minutes
Procedure: Ask students to work in pairs and imagine that they are rich. Tell them they can
afford to buy and eat any food they want. Ask them what they would choose and to list five
typical meals they would have. Get feedback from students then move on to Vocabulary
exercise 1, page 56 and ask them if any of the items in the food list are in their list.
Is this food healthy? Name the healthy items.

Activity 2: Presentation and listening

Aim: - to introduce the concept of junk food;
- to practice listening for details.
Interaction: lockstep
Time: 10 minutes
Procedure: Tell the students the story: I came home last night – but I was so tired. I was so
hungry but there was no food at home. So I went out to McDonald’s and I had a cheeseburger
with fries and a coke. Ask students what they think about this choice of food and collect notes
on the board to describe it (high in fat, salt and sugar, lots of chemicals, high in calories, low
nutritional values, tasty, quick and cheap). Ask students how do we call this type of food: junk
food.
The students will hear 6 persons talking about junk food and they will have to answer
two questions after listening to each person. Each piece of recording is in a different English
accent.

Activity 3: Reading
Aim: - to practise reading and creative thinking;
-to identify true and false sentences based on the read text.
Interaction: lockstep
Time: 20 minutes
Procedure: Teacher writes Elvis Presley on the board next to junk food and elicits opinions
from the students – what do these have in common? Who was Elvis? What kind of food did he
use to eat?
Teacher reads the text out loud after telling the students to put an ! next to the facts that
surprised them the most. Get feedback from students and explain any unknown words.
Draw students attention to the American spellings favorite and donuts, in the text.
Students read the text again silently and answer the true/false questions from ex. 3, page 57.
Activity 4: Team work – Re-ordering story

Aim: - to develop team working skills;

-to practice re-ordering of a text.
Interaction: team work
Time: 10 minutes
Procedure: Hand out one mixed-up story to each group. Students should work out the original
order of the story including the blank lines to indicate the new paragraph. Let groups check
with each other when they have finished and agree on an answer. This could be turned into a
competition between groups.
* Teacher could tell the students the first and last lines of the story (W and T) or the first lines
of each paragraph (WYPR).

Evaluation, feedback and homework – Ex. 4, page 57:

Time: 3 minutes

* Additional exercise: Show the students a power point presentation entitled FOODSCAPES,
containing photos made by the British photographer Carl Warner just using food. Ask students
to identify as many food items as possible. This exercise could be done in the same groups as a
contest. It is a fun way to end the lesson.
