Narrative/Performance/Concept:
The story behind the short film is that it shows how two
brothers who grew up together and are brought up in same
environment, it will show how close and similar the
brothers are when they are children, this gives the
perspective to the audience that they have such a strong
bond and nothing could break them apart, they will be
playing outside in parks playing football together and
laughing being happy. The film then starts to show how the
two brothers are starting to become very different in the
way they dress, speak and act towards people and each
other, The first main character who is Lucas he plays the
normal and well behaved brother whereas the other main
character Sam gets into a criminal businesses with bad
people, he has shown to have taken the wrong path in life.
The brothers are playing football in the same place of when
they were younger, while they are playing football Sam gets
a suspicious phone call, he has seen to become all frantic,
he walks over to his car leaving Lucas alone by himself.
This then results in Sam dealing drugs in the side of an ally
way, montages will be shown of many different deals being
taken place, while doing a deal a problem will occur this
results in Sam getting into a predicament with a big drug
dealer. At this moment in time Sam decides to run from
them and he ends up in a long and winding road which
leads to the woods, every corner of the woods in covered in
trees blocking the light from coming in. while he is
sprinting through the woods the criminals manage to catch
up and they capture him and silently they kill him by
stabbing him and letting him bleed out on the floor.
Characters:
In this film there will be two main actors, who will be
portrayed as teenagers in the first half of the film then
as the film progresses it will show them as young adults,
the reason for showing them growing up is to make a
connection between the audience and characters. For
this film we will be using two people from the group to
be the characters and using their original name in the
movie. Also, for this film we will be using two more
characters who are children, these characters portray
the two main actors of when they are younger and very
close. All these characters will have to perform some
acting skills for the video, they will have to be focused
and ready to perform different types of movements for
the different camera angles for which will be filmed. In
this movie there will not be much dialogue as it’s a short
film, so there will be more acting in it.
The reason for not having much dialogue throughout
the film is that in certain scenes there will be music in
the background this helps makes the scenes more
intense and serious which gets the audience more
engaged, audio affects will be used as well this will show
the genre of which we are trying to create.
There will be extras in the film who will be only in
certain scenes for a short while, they will be walking
around in the street to make the scenes more realistic.
Lighting (colours):
For this short film the lighting will be a key part of the
movie, most scenes will be filmed for when it is about to
get dark outside, it will be very low-key this is because I
want it to be able to fit the genre of the movie
thriller/action. The dark lighting will be done by finding
places which are dim and isolated as these places will be
the darkest to film in. In the scene with the two young
children it will be very high key lighting this is due to it
being filmed in the day, as the light shows innocence but
when it transitions into then when they are older the
lighting will be gloomy this shows a comparison of how
light can be positive and the dark can be negative. This
fits in with the Thriller movie as gives suspense of an
atmosphere changing as there is always two stories
linking with each other. The scene in the forest will be
dark due to all the trees covering any light coming
through, the lighting used will be all natural so gives a
real sense of a thriller movie being filmed.
Genre: Thriller/action:
The reason for choosing this specific genre is it has a
greater impact on a younger audience, as most young
adults relate to action movies which are to do with
violence and gangs. The different types of conventions
what will be shown in this movie is all types of micro-
aspects like cinematography, editing and props using
these types of aspects will then give a clear
understanding of the genre Thriller/Action.
Typography for title:
This font is very clear and easy to read for the viewers, but this
type of font is more suited for a horror movie so we fault that this
type of title would not go best with thriller/action movie. Even
though it didn’t fit with the genre it still is a good first design
which can help us develop other ones for the final design.
This font links to the movie as it changes colour throughout the
title which represents the brother Sam, showing a more neutral
colour being at the start and a more bold colour at the end this
can be seen on how he changes through the movie from innocent
to bad, the red can be represented as blood so this title may be
suited more for a horror movie.
This font is more suttle for the viewers, its not got as many bold
colours through it showing that its more an action movie, this
type of title font is used a lot in violnece movie as the all cap
letters give a sign of importance, which then will engage the
attention of the audience, this fits the genre more, so this is the
final design.
Location (setting):
The first scene of the movie is set on the side of the road, this is
where a car will pull up and the main character Lucas will be
driving, there will need to be a shot inside the vehicle to show a
close up of their face and their expression, a pan shot will be used
to show the location of which it is being filmed in as the audience
will be able to see the surroundings as the area is very remote.
The next scenes of the movie will be set in a busy and popular
park in their local area, this is where it switches to the brother’s
life of when they were younger, showing them playing football
together. We decide to use a park to be a main area of filming this
is because i8t symbolises youth due to it being a place where
children normally play, also a safe area for family to go and bring
their kids this then represents how the two main characters are
innocent.
The next scene of the movie is set in an abandon ally which is a
derelict and run-down area. This will be an area known for crime
and violence. In the ally way the location of it will be dark and
isolated showing the run-down brick walls with graffiti on them.
This scene is about how the character Sam gets into some un safe
business with the wrong crowd and gets himself into some
criminal activity.
The final scene of the movie will be set in the woods, this scene
will be where the character Sam will be running through a long
and winding woods which is filled with trees covering the sky so
the atmosphere is gloomy and dark.
Iconography (props):
Fake drugs:
Fake drugs will be used to represent real drugs and will
show the younger brother’s fall into crime. Drugs will be
used because they are highly frowned upon in society
and clearly show that the brother is rebelling, drugs are
normally represented around violence, so this is what
will get the character Sam into trouble with the wrong
people.
Baseball bat:
The baseball bat will be used to get revenge on the man
that hurt his brother. A baseball bat will be used because
it is an iconic prop for representing violence and
indicates that something bad is going to happen leaving
the audience on the edge.
Football:
This will be used to show the brother’s innocence when
they are children. The football will also help the audience
to understand the close relationship between the
brothers. This football shows the audience the transition
of which the two brothers go through and how this can
also be related to the audience members watching.
Car:
A car will be used in one of scenes, this will then have the
character Lucas inside, and this shows hierarchy in this
film, as one person is trying to be portrayed as
intimidating and powerful, this prop gives a good
indication of that.
