 Due of pipe (d) is obtained as

𝜋
2 × ( 4 𝑑2 ) = 0.3125
0.3125 ×4
d=√ 2𝜋
= 0.446m
d = 0.45m
HL =Head loss through the pipe of 300m long and diameter 0.45m

𝑓𝐿𝑉 2 0.03×3000×22
= 2𝑔𝑑
= 2×9.81×0.45
= 40.77m
Total lift H = Actual difference of WL in reservoir and river + HL
= 20 + 40.77m = 60.77m

𝑢 𝛾 𝑄𝐻 9.81×0.3125×60.77
H.P. of pump = 0.735𝑛 = 0.735×0.8

Example 10
A pump is to deliver water from an underground tank against a static head of 40m. The suction pipe is
50m long and is of 25 cm diameter with Darcy-weisbach friction factor, f = 0.02. The delivery pipe of 20
cm diameter, 16m long and has f = 0.022. The pump characteristics can be expressed as:

Hp = 100 – 6000Q2
Where, Hp = Pump head in meters
Q = Discharge in m3/ sec.
Calculate the head and discharge of the pump.
Sol.
(i) Static head (H1) = 40m

8𝑓𝐿𝑄 2
(ii) Head loss in suction pipe (H2) = 𝜋2 𝑔𝑑2

8×0.02×50×𝑄2
= 𝜋2 ×9.81×(0.25)2 = 84.61Q2

(iii) Head loss in delivery of pipe (H3)

8×0.022×50×𝑄2
= = 90.98Q2
𝜋2 ×9.81×(0.25)2
Total head loss, Hp = H1 + H2 + H3
Hp = 40 + 84.61Q2 + 90.98Q2
or Hp = 40 + 175.59Q2 … (i)
given equation Hp = 100 – 6000Q2 …(ii)
From (i) & (ii) we have
40 + 175.59Q2 = 100 – 6000Q2
Q2 = 9.716 x 10-3
Q = 0.0986 m3/sec.
Hp = 100 – 6000 x (0.0986)2
Hp = 41.7m Ans.
