WALKING THE NEW LITTLE
The installation of ‘Welcome to Little Sutton’ road signs at 4 locations when entering The Village
has provided the opportunity to describe a series of walks from the Village centre to the signs.
Four separate leaflets have been devised, one for each sign. In addition a leaflet is available
which provides a walk visiting all of the 4 signs in a clockwise direction.

Walk 1 to Road Sign ‘NORTH’ (near St Paul’s Church)

Distance: 0.7 miles The Library (opened in 1966) is in what was the Oddfellows field which also provides an
open green public space and adjacent to the main road, a bowling green.
Turn left out of the Library car park
The first significant building is the Olde Red Lion PH built in 1934, replacing an even older version which was in
the way of road widening of the main road in the 1930s to accommodate extra traffic arising from the opening
of the road tunnel under the River Mersey in 1934. (LSM, p.43) Cross over the A41 using the crossing with
central refuge opposite the garage. Turn left to the junction with Heath Lane. The building at the junction of the
A41 (previously A51) and Heath Lane has had many uses including, in the early 1900s, a cycle shop owned by H
Bowyer. (LMS, pg. 96).
Proceeding back along Chester Road we pass a pair of large, late Georgian houses whose façade is rendered in
the style of that time. These are listed Grade II due to their external appearance being little changed. (LMS, pgs.
95-96). Continuing we pass a number of houses which have been converted to shops or services with some
having been unchanged for many years such as the newsagent/confectioner (Bon Bon, now Martins) and W.
Williams (Funeral Directors). (LMS, pgs. 93-94). Beyond these shops and houses we come to the Methodist
Church.
‘Cabra’. The next two pairs, named Sutton then Radford Villas, are dated 1871 and have a polychrome brick band
towards the top of the façade as well as other stone and brick decoration. Crossing the entrance to Greenfield
Road (initially only providing an entrance to the rear of the Villas) we come to a very large brick building said to
be of later date which originally was possibly two houses, but is now three. The final “villa” (2 houses), with a
decorated rendered façade is named Oasis in some documents and Hope Villas in others. (LSM, pgs. 79-84)
Beyond the Villas we arrive back at the entrance to the Library.

Road sign ‘NORTH’

As we walk back towards the centre of Little Sutton, the first building is St Paul’s Church, Hooton.
This was built in the new parish of Little Sutton and is described in the Buildings of Cheshire as ‘one of the most
spectacular churches of Cheshire’. Designed by J K Colling for Richard Naylor of Hooton Hall as a memorial to
his first wife, Caroline, and daughter; it was built in 1858-62. Light coloured stone from Storeton Quarry and
red sandstone from quarries on the Hooton Park estate predominate with coloured granite columns and much
fine woodwork inside.
Colling also carried out the major rebuild of Hooton Hall for Richard Naylor in the 1860s. Burials, which
previously took place at Eastham, did not take place until 1925 in land ad-jacent to the church, purchased from
the Naylor Trust. (LSM, pg. 87) Adjacent to the church are the Entrance Lodges and Wrought Iron Gates to the
former Hooton Hall which pre-date the church by almost 100 years. They were put in place in 1778 by Samuel
Wyatt who was rebuilding Hooton Hall at that time for the then owners, the Stanley Massey family. Missing
from the tops of the central pillars are stags – symbols of the Stanley family. (LSM, pgs. 84-85).
The church, lodges and gates are listed Grade II* Standing in the middle of the semi-circular entrance to
the Hooton Park gates is the War Memorial unveiled on 21 November 1920. A large carved stone cross on a
substantial plinth. (LSM, pg. 84). Walking past the relatively new vicarage we come to a series of large houses
often referred to as ‘The Villas’. Originally, there were 4 semi-detached pairs, but the first pair were demolished
after bomb damage in the second world war. This pair were named No.1 and No.2 The Crabtrees and have
been replaced by a bungalow and detached house. The remaining 3 pairs are relatively unaltered and date
from the 1870s. The first pair have a dramatic polychrome chequerboard (light yel-low and red) brick façade
with the brickwork of the first of the pair having been painted very recently but retaining its name
This was built from 1877 to replace small rented premises in nearby Childer Thornton. It was extended
significantly in 1889 along with the construction of two cottages. Included were a schoolroom and class rooms,
LE SUTTON ROAD SIGNS
The leaflets build on the Little Sutton Memories booklet (LSM). Numerous references are given to
the pages which will provide additional information. All walks start from the Little Sutton Library

where copies of the leaflets are available and also copies of the Little Sutton Memories booklet.
The walks, as described, return the walker to the Library. ‘

which were extended again in 1958 as well as the addition

of a separate classroom off Heath Lane in 1933.
All, including the cottages, are built in red brick with
light yellow and blue bricks creating attractive patterns.
Internally, there is considerable high quality woodwork and
stained glass in the church. (LSM, pgs 89-92) Continuing
northwards from the church there is a long low stone wall
which was originally one boundary of Heyfield, initially a
cottage then a large house on Heath Lane from possibly
the 1870s, now divided and its large grounds occupied by
more recent housing. (LSM, pgs. 97-98).
After crossing the entrance to Granville Drive (a 1950s
development) we arrive at 278 Chester Road, a large red-
brick, double fronted, late Georgian house (c.1820), which
has had different names – initially Holly Mount but more
recently Cedar House (possibly due to a large Cedar of
Lebanon tree in the front garden which survived until early
2017).
Joe Bennion remembered visiting the dentist at this house.
(LSM, pgs. 88-89) We then come to some late 1960s
housing in St Paul’s Gardens, but this was originally the
site of the Hooton Vicarage for St Paul’s church opposite,
a large brick-built house, with a slate roof, probably dating
from c.1860. (LSM, pg. 88). And, finally, just in Little Sutton,
is a white rendered single storey house which originally acted as the Entrance Lodge for the drive up to
what was Thornton Hall (now The Burleydam)
Cross over the A41 using the central refuge opposite the footpath into the garden centre.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Our top tips for your

first Hollywood wax
1. Let the hair grow a bit. They don’t need to be too long, but if they are too short it’s difficult to remove all the hairs.
2. Wash before your appointment as you won’t be washing immediately afterwards.
3. Wear loose clothing as you don’t want any friction in the area afterwards.
4. Relax. Hollywood waxing isn’t a ‘walk in the park’ but with an experienced waxer and with the right wax it will be
over before you know it.
5. Don’t be shy. We really have seen it all before!
6. Let us know if you are taking any medication such as acne medications or if you have any medical conditions before
you arrive for your appointment as not everyone is suitable for waxing.
7. Don’t schedule a wax within three days prior to your period. Your skin will be more sensitive during this time, so
why make it more uncomfortable than it needs to be.
8. You will look a little like a plucked chicken afterwards, but it soon calms down with the right aftercare.
9. Don’t listen to horror stories. They don’t come to us! Tales of screaming will only get your knickers in a twist.
10. Know that most ‘first timers’ leave the room pleasantly surprised as it wasn’t as bad as they expected it to be.
