 Who got what from
Neston Town Council
Neston Town Council has released details of the grants it has
dished out so far this year.
A total of £28,932 has been given out to various good causes and
community groups in the CH64 area with Neston Nomads
footballers taking top spot with £10,000 to provide funding
towards renovation of their clubhouse, medals, courses and
kits for the teams.
Money has been spent on the floral arrangements around
the town, commemorative benches to mark the end of World
War One, Neston Ladies’ Day and general tidying up in the
area.
The council has worked with the Youth Justice Service where
people doing their community service have cleared what was
once a disused overgrown, inaccessible allotment garden at
the Marshlands Road allotment site.

Being the best at losing
wouldn’t normally help
you to scoop an award
- yet one woman from
Neston has done just that
after being named the
town’s ‘Greatest Loser’
2019.
That’s because Cath
Roberts has lost a life-
changing 6st to take the
title, which is awarded to
the member of the Little Neston Methodist Church Slimming World group who has lost the
most weight, and feels great as a result.
Cath, who’s gone from 15st 11lbs to 9st 12lbs, says: “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with
being a loser when it feels this good! I feel like a new woman since losing weight – in fact, I
look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same
person. For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest – I’m happier,
healthier and much more confident now.”
The proud 45-year-old joined the Little Neston Methodist Church group, which is run by
Jayne Williams, in June 2018. Cath says: “My weight impacted on so many aspects of my life,
from struggling to find clothes that I like to fit to not being able to do simple everyday tasks
without feeling tired and out of breath. Before I lost the weight I hated having my photo
taken and whenever I saw pictures of myself I knew that my smile wasn’t real – yet now I’m
beaming!”
Cath’s weight was also putting a huge strain on her health & she had looked into having
weight loss surgery, however, she couldn’t stick to the NHS diet that she had to follow to have
the surgery, so she joined Slimming World.
“I still enjoy all my favourite meals like steak and chips and roast dinners, curries & spaghetti
bolognese, but I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or cooking with
low calorie spray instead of oil or butter. It fits in really well with the rest of my family and we
can all eat the same meals. This is a change that I’ve made for life and have the tools I need
to keep up forever.”
Today Cath has lost a total of 6st 2lbs and gone from a size 20 to a 10. She’s also more active
nowadays and regularly goes for long walks with the dog, something she couldn’t do before
losing weight.

Campaign group Action 540
is aiming to make Neston’s
main highway safer with
ideas to slow traffic and to
educate school pupils.
When local people met at
Neston High School in June
2019 to commemorate the 25th
anniversary of the death of
Andrew Fielding on A540 Chester
High Road in 1994, they resolved
to join forces and campaign for
radical improvements in that road
from Lees Lane to Liverpool Road
in Neston.
Now, just a few weeks after that
event they have held their first
meeting and resolved to intensify avoidance behaviour masks the true danger of

the A540 through Neston safer and more
efficient.
ACTION PLAN
The group elected Phil Lloyd to chair its
meetings, with Ceri Lloyd as secretary - both
of whom are Neston residents and members
of RoadPeace. And it committed itself to some
key actions:
• Maintaining a record of all incidents on the
A540, Quarry Road, Raby Park Road and
Upper Raby Road;
• Obtaining further information on levels of
traffic on the road, including that from the Aldi
Distribution Centre;
• Attending key local authority meetings
in order to ask questions about plans for
improvements to the A540 and possible
sources of cash to carry them out;
• Joining with other campaigns that had
the potential to strengthen the case for
improvements to the A540.
Pauline Fielding, who has been campaigning
for 25 years, welcomed the adoption of Vision
Zero by Cheshire West and Chester Council
– aimed at reducing road deaths to zero in
the local area. Road deaths in the county
more than doubled in the past year to reach
46, while those in London, where the Mayor
adopted Vision Zero in 2017, road deaths have
fallen to 111, the lowest on record. Action is
needed in the county – starting with the A540
in Neston, said Mrs Fielding.
The group will meet again in November and
will be campaigning hard in the meantime.
ACTION 540 chair Phil Lloyd said: “The
campaign to make the A540 safer has gone
up several levels with this meeting of local
action groups. Each of the separate campaigns
deals with a different aspect of the dangers
of the A540; Action 540 will make all of
them even more effective by creating a single
high-profile approach supported by key local
organisations and politicians. The A540 and
its link roads are crucial to Neston - but they
must be made safer and better for all road
users. Too many people have been killed or
injured already; and too much time wasted in
getting improvements. Action is needed now.”

Children burn off some energy
at the new Parkgate Parkrun
Young people in Neston are being lured from their Xboxes and phone screens to get some
exercise every Sunday.
The Wirral Way junior parkrun, Parkgate has got off to a flying start with lots of children taking
part.
It is a weekly 2km run, taking place at 9am every Sunday. They are open to all children aged
between 4 and 14, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.
The event is held on The Wirral Way from the access at Station Road Parkgate (near Park Fields).
The route goes out for 1km to Boathouse Lane bridge and back again, so very simple and scenic.
Parents are welcome to run with their children or wait and watch at the finish.
Co-ordinated by event director and Neston Mayor Dominic Roberts, it has taken one year to get
started and was born out of the Happy Healthy Neston initiative.
Dominic said: “It has taken a lot of paperwork and
meetings, but I am absolutely delighted that we are
now live. Parkrun is such a fantastic idea and helps
children keep healthy, both physically and mentally,
and brings families and communities together on a
Sunday morning”.
Key to the success is the volunteers (AKA highviz
heroes) and the event can’t happen without them.
Volunteers are needed every week (all jobs are
straightforward and you will be briefed and trained)
so if you can help please let the organisers know

Parkrunners and families are welcome to join in
after each event in a local café where the results are
processed and next week’s rota is planned.
If you have children (aged 4-14, inclusive) eager to
take part and who need to burn some energy off on

 HADLOW ROAD STATION REPORT
The new fence at the end of the far platform, beyond the signal box, (by the “No Trespass”
sign) has now been completed and separates the Station platform from the rest of the Wirral
Way, writes Hilary Booth, from the Friends of Hadlow Road Station.
A third “No Trespass” sign will be installed on the opposite platform, also at the Hooton end
of the railway track, this will then be as it looked in the 1950s.
A second historical sign is being refurbished and fitted inside the shelter on the far platform
whilst work is still ongoing with painting all of the white lines on the new platform edges.
The BBC North West came to the station in August to film the progress that has been made
at the station by Friends of Hadlow Road Station Community Group and also to interview
three of our volunteers. Chris, Jenny, and Carole. Fame at last!! This will be shown on BBC
Look North at some time in the near future. The BBC team were there for over an hour but I
think we can expect to be on TV for only a couple of minutes! Keep a look out for it.
Talks about the station and its volunteers continue to be given by Chris our chairman, and if

We had a fabulous turnout for the pop-up-cafe in August when the weather was very hot
and sunny and we were all entertained by the West Approaches Singers.
The next pop-up-cafe openings will be from 10.30am to 12.30pm on 29th September,
13th and 27th October and 10th and 24th November. The new extractor is now working so
provides a much improved working environment for the kitchen volunteers!!!!

Beautiful blueberries
I love blueberries and they are not only
incredibly good for you but also quite
simple to grow. They thrive in a sunny
border or in a pot on a balcony or patio, so
there’s no excuse for not harvesting a crop
of your own.
In addition, they are a generous plant. All
varieties produce pretty white flowers in the
spring, followed by delicate green fruits which
ripen to deep blue. If that wasn’t enough, the
foliage then turns pink and peach for Autumn.
Blueberry bushes do require an acid soil to
thrive but if you don’t have that (I don’t!) then
use pots of well-drained ericaceous compost.
When you need to re-pot, choose a pot just a
few inches larger because they fruit better in
a snug pot! Ensure it has adequate drainage
holes and put some stones or crocks in the
bottom and keep it raised so it doesn’t become
waterlogged. Water with rainwater from your
water butt, especially if you live in a hardwater
area. Make sure they are watered well while they NOTE – Our feathered friends love blueberries
become established and also while the fruit is
ripening. Feeding with tomato food helps too.
Poor or erratic watering causes the blueberries
to shrivel or split, and no-one likes a shrivelled Happy gardening
blueberry!

GARDEN VIEW
If you have acid soil you can plant blueberry
bushes at any time of year when the ground is
soft. Dig a hole twice the size of the root-ball
and spread the roots as you refill the hole to the
base of the stem. Press the soil down with the
heel of your boot.
Blueberries are sun-lovers and will fruit most
abundantly in full sun. They are better grown in
pairs to allow for cross-pollination. If you can
bear it, remove the flower buds in the first year
after planting because it encourages strong stem
growth better fruiting for the following year.
They don’t require any pruning for a few years.
After that thin overcrowded or unproductive
branches in winter after the leaves have fallen.
Remember blueberries fruit on branches
produced the previous year, so each year remove
one or two of the oldest canes to make space for
the more productive younger stems.
In the winter move pots to a sheltered area or
the shed for protection.

The Screen Time Debate
How much is too much?
For many parents battles over screen time
and devices have become a frustrating part
of family life. So how much screen time is
too much for kids? Well, it’s complicated.
For some years parents have been advised
to limit media consumption, but new
research suggests it’s the quality not the
quantity that matters.
Until quite recently parenting advice centred
around the concept of screen time quotas with
a Goldilocks-style sweet spot of two or so hours
of screens a day, beyond which media use
could become harmful. But now the advice is
more conflicting. There seems to be a general
consensus that under the age of six there
should be no more than one hour of “high-
quality programming” per day, but for older
kids the advice is simply to “place consistent
limits on the time spent using media” and to
designate some screen-free time as a family.
Unfortunately it’s not clear whether “consistent
limits” means four hours playing a video game
on a Sunday every week, or whether three
20-minute sessions on an iPad is preferable to
one hour-long session.
What is clear is that for young children one of
the most important things is whether parents
and kids play, watch or browse together.
The nature of screen time matters. Passive
TV is potentially more harmful than game-
playing, socialising, or using creative apps.
Psychologists are likening our media diets to
what we put on our plates. It’s not just about
digital junk-food, it’s about the relationship we
have with technology and the role it plays in
our family life. We need to avoid using screens

to distract teens or younger children from
uncomfortable emotions, in the same way we
wouldn’t encourage the use junk food to soothe
them.
Interestingly a recent study of 20,000 parents
published by the Oxford Internet Institute
and Cardiff University determined that there
was no correlation between limiting device use
and children’s wellbeing. Another study by the
University of Michigan on children aged four
to 11 similarly found that it was how children
use devices, not how much time they spend
on them, which is the strongest predictor of
emotional or social problems connected with
screen addiction.
Although specific screen time limits are out
of date, there is evidence that excessive use
has negative impacts, affecting sleep, health
and mood. Screen time, in and of itself, is not
harmful – but reasonable restrictions vary
greatly, depending on your child’s behaviour
and personality. A useful strategy for parents is
to ensure that what they’re watching, playing
and reading is high-quality, age-appropriate
and safe – and to join in wherever possible.
Balancing the online and offline world seems
to be key, and that may vary greatly from family
to family. Research shows that not having
access to the digital world has a negative
impact on kids too – so it’s all about finding the
right amount for your family, with an holistic
approach.

and using your common sense!

 Thousands raised for Christian Aid
Neston & District Christian Aid committee are celebrating another excellent year of fund-
raising. In March the sponsored walk raised £1800. During Christian Aid Week in May, house-
to-house volunteers collected £5000. To these sums were added collections at Gordale
Garden Centre (£420) and twice at Sainsbury’s supermarket (£400 and £410). Individual
churches also raised money in a variety of ways, and a total of £8,600 was sent to Christian
Aid general fund.
In July, Linda Jones opened her beautiful Burton garden for coffee and cakes, for a second
time, to raise money for Christian Aid. The event raised a splendid £1090, a similar amount to
last time.
