Roberto Salazar
FVP/Group Head
Wealth Development Bank

Dear Mr. Salazar:

Warmest greetings and Happy New Year!

In 1950, 7,420 Filipino Augment Soldiers were sent to war as UN initiative to defend my home town in South Korea.
These 7,420 Filipino soldiers, however, may not have known where South Korea was and what winter was. Using
this analogy would lead to my initiative for Kinatarcan Island – an island in the North of Cebu that needs recognition
for its beauty and fighting spirit.

I have stayed in Cebu for 4 years. I love Cebu as I value it as my second home, and as I discover the province
through my passion in biking, I realize that there are so much in Cebu – so many places to visit and discover, and so
many life stories of the locals to listen to.

My name is Sem Kim, 34 years old, I am a South Korean citizen and I have lived most of my life in the Philippines. I
was educated in the Philippines since elementary, and having educated as a local and privileged with multi-cultural
understanding of the environment that I was exposed to, made me want to be a factor for change of a better
Philippines.

I am also a biker. I was introduced to biking through my friends and just became passionate; I find biking, nature and
humanity are all interlinked. I appreciate the beauty of the Philippines through this sport.

Through my trails, a passion inside of me was searching for something meaningful through biking and contribute to
nation building. I was looking for a community in Cebu that needs help, and because of this, I was introduced to
Kinatarcan Island – an island that needed recognition and support. In which it's well preserved environment and
keeping it preserved would also need support.

Kintarcan Island was one of the hardest hit areas during land fall of typhoon Haiyan. Whatever type of building it was
made of, damage to infrastructure was 100%. Though partially recovered since its destruction, Kinatarcan is still
striving to sustain its life with meager resources.

“266 Kinatarcan: Green Miles for Sustaining Kinatarcan” a project where I will be biking 266km to Kinatarcan Island
to raise funds for the community on January 26, 2019 starting at 10 in the evening and reaching Kinatarcan by
12noon on the 27th.
My plan

My initiative to ride my bike from Liloan port of Santander to Daanbantayan then to Kinatarcan is to show my support
for Kinatarcan Island. This ride will not only support their needs but also in increasing environmental awareness with
almost Zero Emission tour during the ride.

Kinatarcan Island’s livelihood may have improved through the support of many NGOs yet the island still requires
interest and support of many.

In hope of raising funds for the sustainable welfare development of Kinatarcan, I would like to ask for your heartfelt
generosity of funding –

Your generosity will be recognized nationwide through Ms. Gina Lopez G-Diaries show in ABS-CBN, which shows
every Sundays; and through advertisement exposure during my bike ride.

For questions and clarifications, you may contact Kimo Cea, Project Head of 266 Kinatarcan at 09173339515 (Globe)
or e-mail us at 266kinatarcan@gmail.com.

My sincerest gratitude for your support!

For nation building,

Sem Kim

“Pila ka tuig na ka sa Cebu?” I answer by saying “Upat ka tuig na.”

Well frankly, it’s my fourth year after my return. I was in Cebu from 2008 to
2009. I speak two more different dialects to your surprise. This makes me
more interesting to be met than to be read.

Many also do ask me of how long I have lived in the country and I would
always answer trivially. “Cory Aquino was wielding her authority to Fidel
Ramos shortly after I came to the Philippines.” While working with younger
generations, I would answer by telling “I’ve lived longer than you existed”
which later cracks everyone up.

I grew up in the City of Pines, Baguio City. I am a “probisyano”. Many ask

how I ended up in Cebu. I also ask myself “How did I?” I have left Cebu
twice heavy heartedly, yet I returned twice light heartedly. This is something
that you do not get all the time. Now instead of thinking why, I focus on
what I can do.

In 2017, I was introduced to biking by a group of dads of my daughter’s classmates. Since then, I have been biking. I
never imagined biking in Cebu would be this indulging. I now have 3 different biking groups that I am actively
participating in:

 ABC (Active Bike Club) - which my friends and I formed

 LBC (Light Bike Club) - which was formed by members of our church;
 and one group as ‘Saling Pusa’ to a famed Enduro Trail Riding group.

Whenever I introduce anyone new to Cebu I now tell them “You haven’t seen Cebu if you haven’t biked it.” Biking and
Humanity are closely interlinked. You cannot appreciate nature nor the warmth of people specially the Cebuano
Hospitality until you bike – And I am to discover a new one again!

Not too long ago, searching for meaningful activities that could contribute to a country that raised me, and graced
with Christian Love to me during my prayers, an idea sparked. It was biking Cebu tip-to-tip for environmental
awareness and its inhabitants. As soon as I approached my mentor, he introduced to me Kinatarcan Island.

Being devastated during ‘Yolanda’ yet without any casualties but still recovering – my purpose of supporting
Humanity and Creating Environmental Awareness all came into one place. Kinatarcan Island.

This may be my first but I intend to continue riding for these cause.
