- a way for people to be more aware of who they are and to acquire social and interpersonal skills.

Purposes of Dating
- to determine the capability between 2 people
Capability – predicts the success and happiness of a marriage.
Courtship – the stage in which a man and a woman assess each other.
- opportunity for both to determine if companionship could be sustained over a period of time.
- stage in preparation for marriage
- for young people to know the character and disposition of each other.

Marriage – defined as the most committed male-female relationship.
- a legal contract held together by bonds of intimacy and sharing.

Various Forms of Marriage


Monogamy – union of man and one woman for a varying period of time
- produces the highest type of affection or altruistic love and tolerant devotion.
- tends to increase the unity and cohesiveness of the society itself.
Polygamy – state or practice of having 2 or more wives or husbands at a time.
Polygyny – man has two or more wives at the same time.
Polyandry – woman has 2 or more husbands at a time.
Teenage Marriage – type of marriage when young people who are still in their teenage years get
married.

Causes of Teenage Marriage


- Premarital pregnancy – Perceived solution to problems
- Impulsive decision making
Why do teenage marriage usually fails ?
- insufficient maturity
- insufficient financial resources
- wrong reason for marrying
- lack of understanding of marriage responsibility

AFRICA
• There is a norm of suitability.
• Since, mass polgyny is practiced, a wife can be replaced or substituted with another wife by husband if
she fails to bear heirs.
• A brother can replace the husband if he dies.
CHINA
• If highly PATRIARCHAL, follows the three rules of obedience:
1. A daughter obeys her father
2. A married woman obeys her husband
3. A widow obeys his son
INDIA
• Arranged marriage are being practiced to be able to preserve endogamy, where mates are selected
from within one’s spcial group, suc as caste, tribe, race, or religion.
INDONESIA
• Matrilineal family pattern is observed.
• They give emphasis on having smaller families and gives importance on the health of women.
USA/CANADA
• The NEOLOCAL FAMILY PATTERN is being followed.
