Textile industry

1.Cotton –

 5.8 mn farmers involved in cotton production and 40-50 mn people in cotton


processing & trade.
 Cotton producing states : NORTH –PB, HR,RJ ; CENTRAL – MP,GJ,MH,OD ; SOUTH
– TS, AP,TN,KR and few places in UP, TR, WB.
 india exports cotton to Bangladesh ( largest importer) , china, vietnam,
pakistan,indonesia, taiwan, thailand etc

2.Jute –
 Golden fibre, safe packing ,renewable, natural, biodegradable , eco friendly.
 provides direct employment to 3.7 lakh worker in organised mills and suppots
livelihood for 4 mn farm families.
 Jute producing states – WB,BR,AS,TR,ML.
 GOI does direct purchases of jute sacking for 6000cr annually for food grain packing,
under jute packing material (compulsory use in packing commodities) act,1987.
3.Woollen –

 integrated wool development program was launched under central wool


development board, jodhpur
 wool marketing scheme
 wool processing scheme
 angora wool development scheme
4.Silk –

 Queen of texitles. Silk mark – purity of silk.


 Raw (mulberry) silk, bivoltine silk, vanya silk ( Muga, eri , tasar )
 Integrated scheme for development of silk industry is implemented.
 Mahila kissan sashaktikaran pariyojana for Tasar development - in
JK,OD,WB,CG,MH,AP,BR.

5. Handicrafts -
 provides employment to 68 lakh persons in rural and semi urban areas and exports
worth more than 24000 cr in 2017-18.

tamilnadu,madhya pradesh, andhra pradesh, karnataka, UP, telangana, bihar

hastkala sahyog shivar.

6. Technical textile –
 textile materials and products used in protective gears, construction, agriculture,
healthcare , clothing, transportation, packaging, sports and environmental protection.
 Technology mission on technical textile – promoting usage of agrotextiles.
 Agrotextiles helps in doubling the farmers income.
 Centre of excellence established in Agrotech, geotech, protech, meditech, sportech ,
indutech under the scheme for growth and development of technical textiles

 Provides employment to 44.18 lakh people as per 2013 survey
 Contributes 57% of total cloth production
 27 lakh powerlooms in india as on 2017
 SAATHI - initiative to provide energy efficient powerlooms, motors and rapid kits
to small & mid powerloom units at no upfront cost

at 90% subsidy for trained weavers.

3. Handicrafts
Schemes for promotion and development of handicraft sector is under one umberalla
called , National handicraft development programme NHDP.
NHDP has following components
o ambedkar hatshilp vikas yogna - overall welfare of artisans.
o comprehensive handicrafts cluster development scheme
o pehchan initiative - ID card was provided to access to benefits
o pushtaini hunar vikas yojna - training to carpet weavers

For handlooms weavers , govt provides financial support towards modernisation, upgradation,
input support, marketing support, publicity, exhibition, development of exportable
