History of Halloween
Like many other holidays, Halloween has evolved and changed throughout history. Over 2,000 years ago
people called the Celts lived in what is now Ireland, the UK,and parts of Northern France. November 1
was their New Year’s Day. They believed that the night before the New Year (October 31) wa a time
when the living and the dead came together.
More than a thousand years ago the Cristian church named November 1 All Saints Day
(also called All Hallows). This was a special holy day to honor the saints and other people who died for
their religion. The night before All Hallows wa called Hallows Eve. Later the name was changed to
Halloween.
Like the Celts, the Europeans of that time als believed hat spirits of the dead would visit
the earth on Halloween. They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So on that
night people wore customes that looked like ghosts or other evil creatures. They thought if they dressed
like that, the spirit would think they were also dead and not harm them.
The tradition of Halloween was carried to America by the immigrating Europeans. Some
of traditions changed a little, thought. For example, on Halloween in Europe some people would carry
lanterns made from turnips. In America, pumpkins were more common. So people began putting
candles inside them and using them as lanterns. That is why you see Jack’o lanterns today.
These days Halloween is not usually considered a religion holiday. It is primarily a fun
day for children. Children dress up in costumes like people. Did a thousand years ago. But instead of
worrying about evil spirits, they go from house to house. They knock on doors and say “trick or treat.”

Tsunami
Tsunami occurs when a major fault under the ocean floor suddenly slips. The displaced rock pushes
water above it like a giant paddle ,producing powerful water waves at the ocean surface. The ocean
waves spread out from the vicinity of the earthquake source and move across the ocean until they reach
the coastline, where their height increases as they reach the continental shelf, the part of the earth
crust that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor up to the land.
A tsunami washes ashore with often-disastrous effectssuch as severe flooding, loss of
lives due to drowning, and damage to property.
A tsunami is very large sea wave that is generated by a disturbance along the ocean

Thought same foods, such as rice, wheat and cereals, canbe ripened and then stored for years before
they deteriorate, other foods, such as meat and fish, normally deteriorate quickly. Generally, if food is to
be eaten weeks or months after it has been killed or harvested, the procces of decay must be halted by
treating the food in a way which does not make unpalatable. But no single method of preservation is
suitable forr al types of food.
The traditional method of dying, smoking, salting or pickling food were widely used long
before it was known why these methods were effective. It is now known that the process of decay are
accelerated by enzymes already present in the food cells and by bacteria or other micro-organisms
which may be already present or may come from external sources. To preserve food from decay, it is
necessary either to destroy the bacteria cannot multiply and enzymes are inactivated. Bacteria can be
destroyed by heat, and be inactivated by depriving them of moisture. Enzymes can be inactivated by
cold or by reducing the moisture content.
The moisture content of food can be reduced by driying it in the sun or by other means.
Meat or fish suspended overa soking fire is partly dried and the smoke also has bactericidal properties.

Continued progress in advanced technology is not necessary. Already the technical progress in our world
has caused severe pollution in the air and in the water. Although the progress in previous years has been
helpful, recent technology has significantly increased pollution. Another reason to stop technical
progress is that many inventions which were developed for good causes are now also used for powerful
weapons or have been found to have serious side effects. For example, pesticide put inside particle
boards to preventtermites has now been found to be toxic to human life. Technology does not always
bring good effects; for example, computers do much work faster than man, but then man loses his job to
a machine. Because no man can gurantee that technology will haveonly good effects and will be used
only for the benefit or man, we should delay the continued development of technology.

45. The pupose of this paragraph is…..

a. to describe pollution caused by advanced technology*
b. to show how advenagenous advanced technology is for human beings
c. to have people stop developing advanced technology
d. to explain what further inventions in technology should be made
