Identify some features of texts including events and characters
Lesson 1
To gage prior knowledge: Whole class on the mat, “Today, we are going to be looking at narratives!
What is a narrative?” (A story) What is it fictional (fantasy) or non-fictional (true)?

Read the book “Jack and the Beanstalk”


Jump 10 times on the spot
Have the students recap the story and discuss the events. Identify characters and write their names on
the board.

Sheet: Reception – write character names and draw them


Yr 1 – write character names, draw them and describe them

Lesson 2
Whole class on the mat, reflect on what we did last lesson. Read a different “Jack and the Beanstalk”
book, have the students point out the differences.
Do some stretching.
Have students identify their favourite character and think about 3 questions they could ask them. Go
through the sheet and model writing 1 question. Answer any questions and check everyone’s
understanding and confidence.

Reception – write 1 question. Year 1 write 3 questions.


Lesson 2.1
Whole class on the mat, reflect on what we did last lesson. Watch a video of “Jack and the Beanstalk”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VCpAYajmvo. Have the students identify the differences.
Stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down.

Last week, we asked our favourite characters some questions. Discuss how to write a question and the
5W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How). I need everyone to check their work to see if they used
5W’s and put a question mark at the end of a question.

For those that haven’t finished asking their questions, you can continue.
For those that have finished, I need you to check that you have used 5W’s and put a question mark at
the end of a question. I also need you to ask a different character 3 questions. Show the new sheet and
model writing 1 question.
Answer any questions and check everyone’s understanding and confidence.

Receptions write 1 or 2 questions. Year 1 write 3 questions.

Lesson 3
Whole class on the mat, go through all the different “Jack and the Beanstalk” books. Discuss: What is a
setting? What are the different settings? Have the students identify the differences in settings.
Do some stretching and 5 squats.
Identify their favourite setting.
Model drawing my favourite setting. Instruct students to draw their favourite setting in their literacy
book.

Lesson 4 + 5
Read a different “Jack and the Beanstalk” book, have the students point out the differences.
Stretch body and massage face.

Go through the sequence of events. Discuss how plots develop including; beginnings (orientation), how
the problem (complication) is introduced and solved (resolution)

Model the cutting and ordering of events. Have students cut, order and stick the sequencing in their
literacy book, over a double page.

Receptions: glue the matching sentence with sentence


Yr 1: write at least 3 sentences for each sequence.
Early finishers: colour in the events

Lesson 5
Continue ordering and writing sentences Colour in the events, check your work - 3 sentences

Early finishers:
R – write a sentence for each event – use sound charts
1 – write 3 sentences Extension: Have the students discuss the possibility of a different ending
and then write it in their books.

We are going to be creating our own puppet theatre!

Table groups are their puppet retell groups. In their groups, have them decide which character they
want to be. Draw the characters and props and stick them on pop-sticks. Outline with black pen
Puppets: Giant Mum Jack Stranger Cook (optional)

Lesson 7
In puppet groups, write a script to know roles, responsibilities and what you are going to say.

Finish the script and practice performing it

Lesson 9
Perform in front of the class.
