CSE 1105- 5

Part 1, Polices: (5 points)

1. What is a Syllabus, and what does it mean?

A syllabus is a document that guides students to the course they are taking. It includes content, rules, expectation, and
responsibilities for the class. It’s a contract or an agreement between the student and the teacher and by taking the
course students are held accountable for meeting the terms.

2. How many times does this class meet per week?

3. Describe the Cheating Policy for this class

Zero tolerance for cheating. Will result in a zero for the assignment, 10 points deducted in overall grade, and a referral
to student conduct. Also will lose all extra credit.

4. Are you a new student, a continuing student, or a transfer student?

New student
Part 2, Weighted Averages (40 points)

A syllabus contains a description of the way the grade is calculated for the semester score. This type of scoring is called a
weighted average. The individual score of the grade component is multiplied by the percent weight of the calculation.
The sum of the multiplications becomes the numeric grade for the course.

For example:

Coursework Percentage Score Weighted Score

Homework 70% 84.00 70%x84.00=58.80
Attendance 15% 81.00 15%x81.00=12.15
Exam 15% 87.00 15%x87.00=13.05

Weighted Average: 84.00

Calculate the Weighted Average for the following classes.

2.1 Find the Weighted Average

Coursework Percentage Score Weighted Score

Homework 70% 90 63.00
Attendance 15% 92 13.80
Exam 15% 88 13.20

Weighted Average: 90.00

2.2 Find the Weighted Average

Coursework Percentage Score Weighted Score

Homework 10% 90 9.00

First Midterm 30% 80 24.00

Second Midterm 30% 79 23.70

Final Exam 30% 81 24.30

Weighted Average: 81.00

2.3 Find the Weighted Average

Coursework Percentage Score Weighted Score

Term Paper 20% 72 14.40
Midterm Exam 25% 77 19.25
Final Exam 25% 75 18.75
Programming Labs 30% 72 21.60

Weighted Average: 74.00

2.4 Find the Weighted Average

Coursework Percentage Score Weighted Score

Homework 10% 25 2.50
Quizzes 10% 5 .50
Midterm Exam 40% 70 28.00
Final Exam 40% 75 30.00

Weighted Average: 61.00

Part 3, Calculating GPA (40 points)
It is very important for students to be able to work out their grade point average (GPA). Just having a number pop up on
a webpage is not enough, especially if you are trying to make predictions or have concerns. The GPA is the total number
of earned grade points divided by the total number of hours taken.

Grade points are the numeric value of the grade multiplied by the number of hours a class is worth.

Grade Value

A 4
B 3
C 2
D 1
F 0

The second digit of a course number is the number of hours the course is worth for calculations.

CSE 1310 has a 3 as its second digit, and is worth 3 hours.

For example, a student is takes History 1311, and makes an A. That same semester, the student takes POLS 2311 and
makes a B, and BIOL 1441 and makes a C. How to find the GPA?

Course Credit Grade

Title Grade Hours Points Points
HIST 1311 History of the USA before 1864 A 3 4 3x4=12

POLS 2311 Federal Government B 3 3 3x3=9

BIOL 1441 Cellular Organization C 4 2 4x2=8

10 29

Hours Taken= 10, Total Credit Hours= 29

29 Grade Points/10 hours taken= 2.90 GPA

4. Why This Major (15 points)
Write a half page (Calibri, 11, No Spacing) explaining why you are a Computer Science (CS), Software Engineering (SE),
and Computer Engineering (CpE) major, and what you hope to learn from this course and the many other courses you
will take throughout your degree.

I always knew I was going to do an engineering major when I was in high school. I was enrolled in engineering courses in
high school to see whether it was the right path for me. Engineering was always more intriguing to me than any other
career fields. Especially after high school, I was sure what I wanted to do with my life. I researched which field of
engineering would interest me and found out that computer science is the most fitting for me. I’ve always found things
easier to commit to or be great at when you are engaged and enjoying it. Computer science was the most fitting for me
because of its versatility. After extensive research on my major, I found out that CSE is quite flexible and that the
demand for Computer scientists are high. They’re also many job opportunities as a computer scientists. After learning
more about the great market there is for computer scientists, I became more and more excited seeing how flexible it is.
The high demand for computer scientists puts a lot of pressure aside as many students often worry about job
opportunities after college. After googling “computer science jobs” and seeing the long list of jobs, I felt confident in my
decision. Jobs such a game developer sounded really cool to me so that’s a job that I’ll keep in my radar. I also didn’t
want to go to college and spend all the money that hard earned by parents and I just to get a low salary job. The job
salary was also really good for computer scientists and one of my many goals in life is to get rich. With me being a first
generation immigrant, I have the opportunity to turn things around for me and my family. All of these factors played a
role in me choosing the CSE in UTA. In this course I look forward to learning about opportunities that are offered or
events that would interest us. Being new to campus it’ll really help us if we knew where and how to get resources. I
would like to learn about the types of jobs that we could possibly get into with our majors. In my other engineering
courses I look forward to working towards my goals of getting a degree. Hopefully as I get deeper in the semester I’ll be
able to soak as many information about my major to see whether I want commit or switch into a different engineering
field. Overall, I want to learn everything and anything that my classes have to offer me this year and I’ll be fully
committed to doing the best I can.
