1.2 Electric currect is the fundamental electrical dimension in SI; its unit is the ampere (A).

Determine units for the following quantities, as combinations of fundamental SI units.

a. Electric Power : it is defined as energy per unit time.

Thus,

𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝑁. 𝑚
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 =
𝑠

𝑘𝑔. 𝑚 𝑚
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 = .
𝑠2 𝑠

𝑘𝑔. 𝑚2
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 =
𝑠3

𝑘𝑔.𝑚2
Therefore, dimensions of power in terms of fundamental SI units is 𝑠3

b. Electric charge
Electrical current is defined as the time rate of transfer of electrical charge.
Thus,

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒 = 𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 × 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒 = 𝐴 × 𝑠

Therefore, dimensions of elecric charge in terms of fundamental SI units is 𝐴. 𝑠

c. Electrical potential difference

Electrical power is defined as the product of electric current and electric potential.
Thus,

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 = 𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 × 𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑃𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 =
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡

𝑘𝑔. 𝑚2
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 =
𝑠3. 𝐴

Therefore, dimensions of electrical potential difference in terms of fundamental SI units

𝑘𝑔.𝑚2
is 𝑠3 .𝐴

d. Electrical resistance
Drom Ohm’s law, it is defined as ration between electrical potential and currect.
Thus,

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑃𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡

𝑘𝑔. 𝑚2
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝑠 3 . 𝐴. 𝐴

𝑘𝑔. 𝑚2
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝑠 3 . 𝐴2

Therefore, dimensions of electrical resistance difference in terms of fundamental SI

𝑘𝑔.𝑚2
units is 𝑠3 .𝐴2

e. Electric Capacitance
Electric capacitance is defined as ratio between electric charge and electric potential.
Thus,

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙
𝐴. 𝑠
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝑘𝑔 𝑚2
𝐴 . 𝑠3

𝐴2 . 𝑠 4
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝑘𝑔. 𝑚2

Therefore, dimensions of electrical capacitance in terms of fundamental SI units is

𝐴2 .𝑠4
𝑘𝑔.𝑚2

1.6. Pressures up to 3000 atm are measured with a dead-weight gauge. The piston diameter
is 0.17 (in). What is the approximate mass in (lb,) of the weights required?

Answer :
P = 3000 atm
= 3000 x 1,01325 x 105
𝑘𝑔.𝑚/𝑠2
= 3039,75 x 105 𝑚2

D = 0,17 in
= 0,4318 x 10-2 m

g = 9,8 m/s2

𝜋
A = 4 . 𝐷2

𝜋
A = 4 . (0,4318 x 10−2 )2

A = 1,4644 x 10-5 m2

We can use this equation to find the value of m

𝐹 𝑚. 𝑔
𝑃= =
𝐴 𝐴

so

𝑚 𝑥 9,8
3039,75 x 105 =
1,4644 x 10−5

𝑚 = 454,2255 𝑘𝑔

𝑚 = 1001,3957 𝑙𝑏
