REFLECTIVE JOURNAL- WEEK 4

NNNS5806 Nursing and Health care system in Australia

Introduction

During my fourth week of the EPIQ-RN course, our educator taught us about nursing

informatics system. Nursing informatics is an exciting nursing specialty, which affects

learning environments, meaningful use, interprofessional collaboration, patient care settings,

strategic planning, patient satisfaction, and, ultimately, patient outcomes (Wang, Gephart,

Mallow & Bakken, 2019).

Description

I felt excited to learn about nursing informatics system, as it was a new topic for me. Back in

my home country, there is no system of nursing informatics. If anybody wants to know about

the patient, there have to go to the record room and find the correct file of the patient, which

is very time consuming and sometimes they never find the correct file.

Feelings

I felt that it is an essential part of the infrastructure to improve access to health information,

make patient care safer, decrease health care costs, and improve outcomes (Pordeli, 2018). I

also felt that there should be a nursing informatics system in every hospital to ensure that

documentation systems correctly capture evidence-based care.

Evaluation

The whole experience taught me how nursing informatics work and how it benefits the

patient’s outcomes.

Analysis

Today, nurses are working in advanced technological healthcare systems but many entering

the workforce are not prepared and lack the informatics competencies needed (Found, 2012).
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL- WEEK 4

Hence, to improve and advance informatics competencies, training on informatics knowledge

is needed regularly for both the bedside and informatics nurses.

Conclusion

Nursing informatics has become an essential and fast-growing specialty. Hence, nurses

should know regarding it and reflect in their practice. Nurse leaders should support, promote

and provide informatics continuing education, and the development of informatics

competencies to increase nurse participation in healthcare information technology decisions.

Action plan

In the future, I intend to make myself more familiar with nursing informatics system. I would

also plan to attend online training and seminars about nursing informatics to update me with

the knowledge and skills.
