What are your views about leading a workforce in the current global
marketplace?

Leading a team is just not an accountability however a greater


responsibility in terms of managing people, ensuring their overall yet
timely development and maintaining relationships. As a leader, I make
conscious effort to develop my team members to have an overall grooming
and more specifically seek zones and opportunities to align their area of
interest by means of cross functional training.

2. How do you describe your approach to leading globally?

Leading a team globally opens the door to acknowledge cultural


differences. There is a strong need to keep the communication window
open in order to create appropriate opportunities to each global member
to participate, promote and support diversity initiatives.

3. Who are your leadership role models?

Indira Nooyi - I have grown in an era where there is a dearth of women


leaders despite greater potential. Ms. Nooyi is highly inspirational -
educationally, professionally and most importantly humanly. I will term her
as a women of substance.

Virat Kohli - Although a sports person, he is certainly a man who leads


with vigor, passion, commitment and right attitude which drives just not
results however ensures a consistent performance.

4. What approaches to leadership have you found effective? Why?

I follow and recommend a blended leadership approach which is a


combination of being democratic and independent. The former enables me
to embed the importance of team work and mutual respect where as the
latter is needed to develop team members to work independently which
makes them more decisive in their decision making skills.

5. What approaches to leadership have you found ineffective? Why?

I neither believe nor encourage micro management style of leadership.


The style restricts team members creativity towards problem solving and
dealing with situations. As a leader, it is important to understand that
adults need to be guided and not taught.

6. How do you determine which approach to leadership to use in a


specific situation?

As a leader it is very important to be flexible and lead in accordance to the


situation and people whom you lead. My team comprises of rookies,
members with just over a year into the system and others who have spent
almost a decade in the organization. Hence, it is imperative to know as a
leader, where I am required to direct, coach, support and delegate
responsibilities. Trusting and investing in the ability my people, makes me
switch my approach to leadership, aligned directly towards the growth of
my members.

7. What was the most rewarding experience you had as a leader on the
international stage?

- When your abilities to lead and knowledge related to the business is


trusted, and is given an opportunity to represent on a global platform

- When your people feel comfortable bringing ideas on the table

- When your opinion counts in strategic decision making

All of the above have been quite rewarding and continues to add new
experiences with each passing day.

8. What was the most difficult situation you faced as a leader, and how
did you manage it?

Complying with business decisions goes without saying. Having said that,
it was very difficult to have my team members understand such decisions
and deal with the consequences. Emotional outburst due to insecurities
were at its peak. It was important as a leader to gather myself and take
charge of the situation. I believed in transparency in my communication
and discussed the practical outlook of the decision made. Easier said
than done, this where relationship building over years play a vital role. We
discussed feasible alternatives as a team to deal with the situation
appropriately.

9. In what ways has your approach to leading shifted over the years?

Leading is an evolving process. Each day is a unique experience and


promotes a new learning. I would rather say my leadership style has
matured over the years.

10. What messages do you have for the next generation who will lead the
workforce in a global context?

Patience, perseverance, ethical dealing and mutual respect - will take an


individual long way. Have a dream, believe in it and strive to achieve it
rightfully.
