weekends
Navya Charan is a class 12th standard student in Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya School, JP Nagar. She
is a science student but plans to shift the course of her education and study political science. Due
to her change in education line, she have conflicts with her parents. As both the parents and sister
are from science background, her shifting to a humanity subject didn’t sit well with them.
Analysis of the behavioural Problem

Navya started rebelling against anything her parents said. There was a huge miss-communication
between the child and her family. Though the sister took her side. Her parents didn’t exactly
understand her reason to change the line of education.

She stopped eating food to make her parents realize how serious she was in this matter the matters
didn’t react to it and it lead to more arguments. The child continued with her ignoring her food and
after her parents forced her to eat her meals she did but puked it out later.

She found this way of staying in control according to her and found that one thing that she could
decide and do at her own pace was controlling her eating habits. Within 2 months she lost 5 to 6
kgs. As she is already a slim girl and losing weight made her look more pale and skinny. She would
completely went on liquid diet and even that was very restricted.

Whenever the topic about her change in field would come up, she would always have a fight with
her parents and it would affect her eating later.

All carried on for about 8 months. It was during her sports class in school that she fainted while
playing games and had to rush to the hospital as her blood pressure and dropped initially.

Her parents where informed and called to the hospital directly. It was there after the intimal check-
up the doctors realised that she has developed eating disorder. The doctors instantly performed
other physical test and lab test and it was confirmed that the child is going through eating disorder.

Suggestion for behavioural problem

The doctors made sure that the child starts counselling and was put on medication to get her weight
back to normal. Daily check-up for first 3 months was suggested. As the child is when she started

The parents were also asked to go for counselling with the child.

Eating disorder is a huge thing. As the underline issues seem to be the conflict between the parents
and child they can work on it:

 Family-Based Therapy
 Talk about what was the cause
 Create a positive environment for the child at home. Her changing the stream of education
still have time. Focus on the child’s 12 class. support her in studies and decisions matter
 The child should be more vocal and should understand that she cannot force her decision
giving her parents time to adjust to the change of education stream.

Conclusion

The child and the parents have to work on their issues or focus on the child’s health and mental
health. The main goal should be getting the harmony back in the child and parent relation. The
parents need to support the child in her choice of education stream and the child need to understand
the parent’s point of view. The child should focus on getting healthy and gaining her required wait.
