Abstract

Preferences on the use of books and internet as a learning reference

among grade 9 students (2018-2019). This study aims to compare internet

searching and book searching advantages and disadvantages. The proponents

have gathered data using survey questionnaires. To know whether grade 9

students are still using books in the library as a learning reference or would

choose to surf through the internet. Hence, because of the enhancement of the

technology students lost interest in going to the library, but in our own study we

found out that majority of our respondents are preferred on using books as their

good source of information than the internet. The survey that we gathered showed

us that not all of the students would prefer on searching on the internet to look for

necessary information. This study is important because it will show us the

importance of the books even if the technologies now are more accessible. Our

research answers why students would choose internet or library books as their

learning references.

This study aims to compare internet searching and book searching. We collected

data using survey questionaires. The data we gathered are statistically explain
5

and interpret. Its shows that grade 9 students is preferred on using internet than

books as a learning preferences, we wanted to students to be aware that they

can`t compare internet to books because books are having more information than

internet.

I. Introduction

Technology nowadays, improves our ways of studying, from using the traditional

books into searching in the internet which results into a better knowledge for the

students. Moreover, this study explains on the students’ capability on using the

internet and books as learning reference. Why does most of the students choose

to use the internet rather than the books and what could be the effect on this to

each individual.

Meanwhile, the fast development and improvement of technology, we all know

what is the proper use or purpose of internet. The researchers conducted an

interview through survey. The proponents have gathered (10) questions and have

selected random individuals from grade 9 students to answer the survey

questionnaires. The conducted survey aims to identify the most preferred way of

studying among the students. The researchers also conducted this study in order

to inform the people specially the students that we cannot compare the books to

internet because according to some research there are more information found in

books than internet.

II. Review of Related Literature

6

According toJennifer Wilber(2018), e-books are instant, With eBooks, you

don’t even need to leave your house to buy new books or borrow them from your

local library. You can purchase books directly from a digital bookstore and

download them instantly to your device. Even libraries now offer digital eBook

lending, so you can instantly download library books for free to your eReader

without ever having to visit the library. You can acquire an entire library of new

books on your eReader while still wearing your pajamas or sitting on your couch.

E-books are more portable than e-books, Print books, especially hardbound

editions, can be very heavy, while most modern eReader devices are designed to

be lightweight. It is much easier to carry an eReader containing an entire library of

books on an airplane or on the train than to bring a physical book or two. If you

finish the book you are reading while traveling, it is much easier to obtain a new

eBook than to find somewhere to purchase new books. If you have your digital

eBook collection synced to a cloud service, you can seamlessly switch to reading

your eBooks on your phone if you find yourself with extra time to kill but didn’t

think to bring your eReader.

III. Research Questions:

1. What is the profile of the Grade 9 students in terms of age and sex?

2. What are the reasons of choosing books as learning reference over internet?

3.What are the reasons of choosing internet as learning reference over books?

IV. Scope and Limitation

We conducted a research survey among Grade 9 students from different

sections of Pedro ‘OLOY’ N. Roa Sr. High School campus. We choose the grade

9 students because most of the active students are from this grade level. We did

not choose random sections; we choose sections with having the most number of

honour. Majority of our respondents are five to sixteen years old, their identity

would be hidden on this study.

V. Research Methods

This part of the research presents the procedure and sequences followed

in gathering the needed data to answer the problems in this study. It describes the

following: Sampling, Data Collection, Ethical Issues and Plan for Data Analysis.

Sampling Procedure

The participants of this study werethe Grade 9 students of PN Roa Sr. High

School for the school year 2018-2019.

We choose the grade 9 students because most of the active students are

from this year level and this students we choose are mostly honour students.

Data Collection

This study will employ the descriptive method of research. It aims to

identify if students are using books and internet as there learning references. To
8

conduct this research study, the researchers conducted a survey among grade 9

students.

For formality sake, the researchers explained the rationale of the action

research. A consent form was also provided to the students and parents. After

then, the researchers administered the survey questionnaires.

The researchers believe that this research is very important because some

us forgot the value of our traditional books.

Ethical Issues

To solicit high and positive response of the students towards this research,

the researchers conducted an orientation first to the students. In this orientation,

the researcher explained the main objective of the research and the process of

conducting it.

To ensure that the participants would participate in this research which is

out of their own freewill, the researchers provided a consent form. In this consent

form, a brief background of the research purpose was presented. Since the

chosen participants are still minors, the researchers asked the parents to provide

consent and sign the form in behalf of their children. The consent form provided

permission to the researcher that the participants agree to participate in the study

and that any result of this study could be published in any form. The consent form

also respects the right of every participant to withdraw such participation in the
9

course of the study. The identity of the respondents of this study would also

remain confidential.

Plan for Data Analysis

Based from the different data gathered in the researcher-made survey

questionnaire, the researchers will then tabulate the data which will then affinitize

the different responses of the student participants to come up with the common

answer or area of concern, difficulty and challenges.

The data to gather in this research is the result of the survey

questionnaires which were recorded, compared and analyzed in terms of their

mean percentage hoping to see how many students would choose internet over

books or books over internet as there learning reference.

14

wanted to identify the most fastest way of studying among the grade 9 students.
And why does most of the them choose to use internet rather than books. And if
