The vibrant, festive colours of Diwali
will light up four Auckland landmarks
next weekend, in celebration of the 18th
Auckland Diwali Festival. This year,

Auckland Museum, Auckland Harbour
Bridge and Viaduct Harbour will shine
bright to showcase Indian culture in
Auckland. The free, family-friendly
festival takes place in Aotea Square and
Queen St on Saturday, 12 and Sunday, 13
October, from midday until 9pm each
day, culminating in an incredible firework
display on Sunday night.
The light displays at all four landmarks
will reflect the newly-launched 2019
Diwali Festival colours of fuchsia, yellow
and orange; also taking inspiration from
centuries-old traditional Indian art form
of Rangoli, where designs are drawn onto
the ground, traditionally using coloured
powders and decorated with sand, rice,
candles or flower petals. Before and
during the festival, Vector Lights brings a
light show inspired by traditional art form
of Rangoli to Auckland Harbour Bridge
from Wednesday, 09 October to Sunday,
13 October. The lights will switch on from
7pm until midnight each evening.
In celebration of Diwali, the Sky Tower
will also be lit from Wednesday 9 October
to Sunday 13 October, where the base will

close the festival with Diwali-themed

would typically say they have three things
they need to worry about: interest rates,
farm gate prices and the weather. Interest
rates are at record lows, farm gate prices
are above historical averages, and the
weather has been pretty good. In many
ways’ farmers should be optimistic, but
confidence is at all-time lows instead.
The survey shows that farmers’
confidence has taken a sharp drop with
68 per cent of farmers holding a negative
outlook, citing the Government as the
main reason. This is not surprising
considering the continued onslaught of
uncertainty and costs that farmers have
endured since this Government came
to power, whether it be the Tax Working
Group report and subsequent Capital
Gains Tax campaign, a proposed water
tax, a proposal for agriculture entering
the Emissions Trading Scheme, onerous
methane targets in the Zero Carbon Bill
and now the Freshwater proposals and
cynical consultation process surrounding
them.
This is having a tangible impact on both
farmers’ mental health and businesses.
The sector has spoken clearly and directly
to the Government, but they are not being
listened to. Sadly, it was all but ignored
by the Government, in fact their response
was to trivialise the issue and make it
political. The primary sector accounts

for about 60 per cent of New Zealand's
goods exports. New Zealand is too small
to competitively produce cars, computers
or pharmaceutical goods. If we want
first-world healthcare, transport and
education, we need to sell something to
the world to afford to buy our first-world
affluence.
Rather than demonising the rural sector,
and by implication the farming families
who create it, we should be celebrating
them for the massive sustainability and
environmental improvements they’ve
made. In the past 30 years they’ve
managed to produce more sheep
meat from 32 per cent fewer sheep
due to improvements with enhanced
breeding mixes and enhanced lambing
percentages. Our dairy products are so
much more sustainable that a litre of New
Zealand milk shipped to Ireland – the
next most efficient producer – would still
have a lower emissions profile than Irish
milk produced locally.
Recently, the Prime Minister told the
United Nations she was “determined to
show that New Zealand can and will be
the most sustainable food producer in the
world” and then separately “we must lead
on reducing our agriculture emissions”. If
this Government really wanted to stand
up for our farmers then she should have
been singing their praises as already being
the most sustainable food producer in
the world, as well as encouraging other
nations to follow our lead in producing
low emissions food.
Quite frankly, it’s this efficiency compared
to every other nation that shows just how
vital our food producers are to the world.
If we weren’t producing at the rate, we are
then another less sustainable producer
would simply take that market share and
global emissions would rise while our
export revenue drops.
This crisis of confidence needs to turn
around and the Government needs to
wake up and put our primary sector at the
forefront of its policy.

Advocates for Human Rights and
Access to Justice'.
The European Union's ambassador
to Fiji, Sujiro Seam, told participants
respecting human rights was an
essential element of democracy.
He said the EU recognised and
promoted civil society and their
programmes in raising awareness of
human rights.
That, he said, also strengthened a culture
of rights and freedoms in the community.
The Fiji Legal Aid Commission said in a
statement it was important Fijians openly
talk about the issue.
Acting director Shahin Lal said they
provided legal services on civil, criminal
and family laws.
"Particularly to those who are unable to
exercise their right to access justice for
economic reasons."
He said participants would be able to talk
about human rights with confidence to
members of the community "in a way that
they will understand and embrace it".

He said it would be a great clash against a
traditional rival, but the team was ready.
The Solomon’s coach said he knew
many of the Vanuatu team well through
working with them in club play over

India's position getting stronger in IAF organises air show

the world day-by-day: BJP MP
ahead of Air Force Day

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi here on
Tuesday said that India's position in the
international arena is getting stronger
while that of Pakistan's is getting weaker
by the day.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's
reception in the US was done beautifully
and 'Howdy Modi' was a successful event
in the world and everyone has noticed
about it," she said while speaking to
media.
Lekhi also slammed Pakistani Prime
Minister Imran Khan for repeatedly
talking about wars and bombs.
"Our PM spoke about the development
and world's peace, whereas Pak PM Imran
Khan continuously commented about war
and bombs, and because of this Pakistan
is alone in the world. India's position is
day-by-day increasing in the world and
Pakistan's position is getting weak in the
world because of its support to terrorist
activities," she added.
The BJP leader also said Article 370
and Article 35-A was our aim and its
abrogation were done after many decades
by PM Modi and Home Minister Amit
Shah.
The Indian Air Force on Monday
organised an air show and display of
their fighter aircraft and helicopters at
Sulur Air Force Station, near Coimbatore.
Different fighter jets and aircrafts
displayed at the air show included
Tejas, Antonov An-32 transport aircraft,
helicopters among others.
The air show and display were held in
the run-up to the 87th Air Force Day
celebrations which will be organised on
October 8.
The show was attended by schoolchildren
and teachers who were briefed about the
utility and the applications of the various
aircraft and weapons which were on
display.
"The main focus is to prove our aerial
strength and motivate the youngsters to
join the Indian Air Force," officials of the
IAF said.
The Indian Air Force was established on
October 8, 1932, in undivided India which
was under colonial rule. It was given the
prefix "Royal" by King George VI for its
contribution during the Second World
War. The prefix was later dropped in 1950
when India became a republic.

MP honey trap case:

Rajendra Kumar
appointed as new SIT chief
Rajendra Kumar has been appointed as
the new Chief of the Special Investigation
Team (SIT) probing the honey trapping
case.
Kumar has replaced Sanjeev Shami who
was previously doing the investigation as
the SIT chief in the case.
15 IPS officials have also been
transferred, apart from the latest
appointment.
Six persons including five women and
a man were arrested in connection
with the honey trapping case.
The incident came to light after an Indore
Municipal Corporation (IMC) engineer
filed a complaint alleging that two women
were blackmailing him by threatening to
make some objectionable videos viral. The
engineer was later suspended from the
service by the IMC.

Elections in Haryana
& Maharashtra Here's how Bamboo is
bringing development
Elections are scheduled to be held in the
Indian states of Maharashtra and Haryana
on coming 21st of October and results are
in Jharkhand
expected to come out by 24th October.
By election for 64 seats in 17 states and
Union Territories are also to be held
on the same day with the results to be
expected to come out around the same
time.
This election is going to be test for
pre- poll alliance forged in Maharashtra
between the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena and
opposition NCP and Congress party. The
relations between the two old allies have
never been an easy one while BJP, being
a National Party, is much bigger than
Shiv Sena in size and magnitude. On the
other hand, Shiv Sena, despite of being a
regional force, have always tried to twist
arms of the big brother and demanding
lions share in ticket distribution. It good
that so far BJP has been playing a good
big brother to them but Shiv Sena’s
demands just keep growing by every
passing day. Till the time of writing
this article the negotiations on ticket
distribution was continuing though the
seat numbers of each party fighting for,
has been announced. Other demand of
Shiv Sena for the alliance is their claim
for the top job which is ethically wrong.
It will be tough job for both Amit Shah
and Modi both, to make the Sena agree
to an amicable alliance acceptable to
both parties so the opposition does not
take advantage from any dispute. BJP has
faced much tougher and bigger challenges
in the past on similar issues and have
successfully negotiated to their terms, but
it will very interesting to see the outcome
of the negotiations this time, in coming
days.
The condition of the opposition parties
on the other hand is not very encouraging
both NCP and Congress party are slowly
losing ground in the state. Maharashtra
state was once a very big stronghold of
Congress and NCP but now both parties
are severely getting marginalised due to
the allegations of deep-rooted corruption

both the parties to join their rivals. So, the
opposition hardly stand a chance in the
state.
The state of Haryana is very well placed
under the able leadership of incumbent
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who
is expected to come back much stronger
than before. With many celebrity sport
stars joining the party and contesting
election, the air is clearly favouring him so
far unless something surprising comes up
at the last minute. Congress Party is trying
hard, but it appears too much divided on
different lines and issues. Congress party
is trying hard to create some last-minute
election planks and issues in a bid to
make a comeback but does not seem like
it can win any respectable numbers in
assembly to become even a formidable
opposition. The issue with the oldest
political party of the country is the same
in every election, that of the corruption
charges on the top leadership. Party
workers feel demoralised and cheated due
to the weak leadership and the voters of
today understand this really well. There is
no anti-incumbency wave in either state
and the Modi magic is still going very
strong which will reflect in these election
results as well.
Modi has been successful in leaving a
lasting impact both on local level and
globally as well. After his very successful
visit to UN and United States where
he completely marginalised Pakistan
and the Kashmir issue, he will be back
in action soon for the elections. This is
Modi’s biggest asset, to continuously keep
working for the nation tirelessly. He has
just turned 69 years last month, but his
jest and energy level can match someone
40 years younger than him. He has this
big ambition of taking India back to its
respectable position of ’ Vishwa Guru’
and to make it a superpower. To achieve
this goal, he knows, he has to lead from
the front and show the way to his fellow
countrymen.

Bamboo which is known as green gold
is a strong, profitable, renewable as well
as environment-friendly crop that can
be easily grown for various purposes.
Bamboo is also considered to be the most
durable material on earth.
India being the second-largest producer
of bamboo in the world after China,
continuously strives to create and increase
awareness of bamboo globally. Owing to
the durability and ability to grow in any
environment, the plant is considered
as a symbol of progress and prosperity.
Scientists across the country believe that
the plant compared to other vegetation
has 35 percent more oxygen. The concept
of sustainable development and the vision
of 'Green India' is also being realized
through bamboos. On September 18,
people of Jharkhand, a tribal-dominated
state, which is the largest producer of
bamboo, celebrated World Bamboo Day
with great fervour and zeal. The Thai
Royal Forest Department declared this
date as World Bamboo Day in 2009 at the
8th World Bamboo Congress.
Making the day special, the government
of the state planned to bring about
positive changes in the livelihood of the
tribal through various schemes. On one
hand, the emphasis was on increasing
the production of bamboo, while on the
other hand, skill trainings were also being
imparted to the artisans.
Apart from the initiative, the Chief
Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das also
organised a two-day Bamboo Artisan Mela
2019 in Dhuma where artisans received
training on sustainable development.
Investors from all over the country
were informed about the bamboo-
based industry at the mela. Several
organizations such as IKEA, TRIFED,
Fabindia, ESAF from states including
Assam, Tripura, Delhi, and Meghalaya
were also spotted attending the mela. K
Ravi Kumar, Secretary, Department of
Industries, Jharkhand, highlighted some
of the efforts by the government to lift
people out of poverty through various
programs and schemes pertaining to
bamboo production.
According to Kumar, the government will
ensure that the income of people living in
rural areas becomes doubled to lift them
out of poverty by the year, 2022. Kumar
also informed that the efforts are being
made to provide employment to people
through forest-based products. National
Bamboo Mission and Jharkhand State
Bamboo Mission are working together
to promote production of bamboo, small
and cottage industries. Through the
concept of Green India for farmers and
sustainable development, the government
is also working toward achieving more
employment in the bamboo-based
industry.
As per a report by India State Forest, the
forest cover in the Jharkhand is 23,478 sq
km. Today, the demand for Jharkhand's
bamboo has increased all over the
world. Half of India's bamboo is found
in Jharkhand which includes Bambusa
tulda, Bambusa nutans and Bambusa
balcooa which are at increasing demand
worldwide. Bamboo Crafts has become
the main industry of Jharkhand, and about
500 types of products are made of bamboo
which are then transported to other
states. Bamboo production generates an
income of Rs. 50 lacs for the government
every year.
Bamboo is abundant in each district
of Jharkhand. Its abundance promises
great potential for the people of the state
in terms of employment. Also, bamboo
can be utilised in various ways ranging
from agriculture to alternative sources
of energy. Demand for bamboo products
such as sofa sets, tables, bags, and artistic
materials for daily use has increased in
recent times due to which its trade has
also increased in the world.
Since the demands for bamboo products
are rising, the artisans are being trained
on modern methods of production to
ensure maximum employment. Bamboo
artisans Santosh Mahli, Kashinath Mahli,
Joseph Mahli, Babita Kumari, Marshila
Hembram earn Rs 10 thousand per month
from this employment. In Jharkhand,
the government is working towards
increasing the income of the poor.
The tribals of Jharkhand will no longer
migrate to West Bengal for employment,
bamboo will provide them employment
at home. The Bamboo Cottage Industry
will bring about positive changes in the
life of the tribals in the state. Jharkhand
is a forest state where natural wealth
is aplenty. Bamboo is becoming a huge
employment opportunity for the people of
Jharkhand.

Census Data Give Closer

Warms Up Market
With the Census data being revealed last
week, we finally got an in depth look at how
the property market is shaping in Auckland
and the rest of the country. It also seems
that with spring’s arrival a small but notable
bump in house sales has sprung up with it.
Here’s what you need to know:
Census Data Gives Closer Look at
Housing Market Developments in
Auckland
Last week Statistics NZ released data
between the 2013 and 2018 censuses,
which revealed that the country's resident
population increased by 10.8% while the
total number of dwellings increased by
just 6.2% - suggesting that there is still a
significant shortfall in housing compared
to population growth. This is most notable
in Auckland, where the region's population
increased by 156,168 (11%) between the
2013 and 2018 censuses, but housing stock
increased by just 6.5% over the same period.
In Auckland, housing shortages are
more significant due to the sharp scale
of migration-driven population growth,
but surprisingly the data suggests that
there was a much greater rate of housing
growth in the up-market suburbs of the
city where population growth was greater.
In up-market suburbs such as Ponsonby,
Grey Lynn and Herne Bay, one new home
was built for every 1.8 residents added to
the area's population between censuses, in
comparison the Otara-Papatoetoe board
area, just one new dwelling was added for
every 12.9 new residents, in Manurewa it
was 12.6 and in Mangere-Otahuhu it was
11.8 new residents.
What is even more interesting is that despite
a clear need for more housing to keep up

New Delhi has "made its decision" on the
purchase of S400 missile system from
Russia and held a discussion in this regard
with Washington, External Affairs Minister
S Jaishankar said on Tuesday, amid the
looming threat of US sanctions over the
purchase.
As part of his three-day agenda in
Washington, Jaishankar participated
in a conversation held at the Centre for
Strategic and International Studies think
tank. Here, the minister was quizzed on

We can shift our mindset toward more Optimism and Happiness

When I was in my early twenties, my boyfriend,
Bart, and I were driving on a freeway near
downtown Atlanta when we got a flat tire. I
immediately panicked—this was long before
everyone had cell phones. I worried we would
be stranded for hours, that I’d have to either
walk alone and get help or stay alone with the
car, that our whole day would be ruined by this
car trouble.
As Bart pulled to the side of the road, I
shared my numerous concerns. He looked
questioningly at me and said, “I’m just going
to change the tire—it will take a couple of
minutes.” He changed the tire, and we were
soon on our way.
This story illustrates an important principle:
Some people find it easier to adopt a positive
attitude than others, which influences how
they respond to life’s setbacks. While I saw the
flat tire as a major problem, my boyfriend saw
it as a minor inconvenience. His more positive
mindset kept him calm and allowed him to
take appropriate action. My more pessimistic
outlook simply led me to suffer and feel
helpless.
This difference in how we perceive and
respond to events and challenges in our lives
matters for our happiness and health. When
we have more optimistic mindsets, we are
better able to buffer the effects of common
daily life stressors and still feel happy. And, as
one study found, optimism is healthy for us:
People ages 40 to 90 tended to live longer if
they were more optimistic—even taking into
account other factors, like their diet, smoking
and alcohol use, depression, and health
conditions.
But here’s the good news for those of us who
have trouble finding the silver lining: Our
mindsets can change. We can shift our attitude
in a more optimistic direction, no matter our
natural inclination, with time, energy, and
effort. Here are five research-based strategies
for doing that.
1. Reframe stressors -
Stress is unavoidable. We all experience daily
hassles—like long lines, irritating coworkers,
and endless to-do lists. While we can’t
eliminate all stress, we can choose how we
think about the challenges we face and adopt a
new, more positive mindset around them.
Of course, some optimistic people seem to do
this naturally. (Lucky them!) They go through
life easily seeing the positive in irritations and
bad events, which helps protect their mood.
If positive reframing doesn’t come naturally
to you, start by trying to focus on what’s good
about your daily life stressors instead of what’s
bad about them. For example, if you’re stuck in
a traffic jam, take time to look out the window
at nature and focus on its beauty.
Here are some examples of how you might
transform a setback into something positive:
Stuck in an airport? Consider it unexpected
free time to call a friend or read a good book.
Passed over for a promotion? This could mean
it’s the perfect time to polish your resume or
explore other—perhaps even more fulfilling—
career options.
No plans on New Year’s Eve? Fully embrace
cozying up in front of the TV and watching
the festivities in comfort, or maybe appreciate
getting an early start on that New Year’s
resolution to clean out your overflowing closet.
We can’t control what life throws at us, but
we can all practice reframing difficult events
as challenges to be mitigated, rather than
calamities.
2. Practice self-compassion -
Some people have a tendency to beat
themselves up when things don’t go their
way—which, not surprisingly, doesn’t make
them feel better. To shift our mindset in a more
positive direction, we can simply give ourselves
a break and treat ourselves with kindness, the
same way we’d treat a close friend who’s having
a hard time.
People who practice self-compassion are less
likely to blame themselves when bad things
happen, which works in their favor: They are
less anxious and depressed and overall feel
happier and more optimistic about the future.
For example, first-year college students who
have more self-compassion during this difficult
life transition are more engaged and motivated
in college life—perhaps because they feel
better able to handle the challenges college
presents and more connected to other
people in their lives.
So, when bad things happen, cut
yourself some slack. Forgive yourself,
be kind to yourself, and treat yourself
with care and compassion.
3. Let it go
 -
Besides blaming themselves for
setbacks, people can also fall into
the trap of ruminating on bad events
long after they’re over. Rather than
accepting what’s happened and
moving on, they get stuck in their
negative feelings—then, to make
matters worse, they beat themselves up
for feeling bad!
People who criticize themselves for
having negative thoughts and feelings
have higher levels of depression and
anxiety, and lower levels of psychological
well-being and life satisfaction. That’s because
when you blame yourself for your feelings, it
creates a vicious cycle, where ruminating leads
to bad feelings which lead to more ruminating.
If you find yourself ruminating about a fight
with a friend, a difficult situation at work,
or the current state of American politics, try
a new approach: Identify and stop resisting
these negative thoughts and feelings. For
example, you might think, “I’m feeling lonely,”
or “My job isn’t going well,” or “I’m frustrated
right now by our government.” Naming
and accepting your negative emotions and
thoughts will help keep you from holding onto
them so tightly and will clear the way for a
more positive attitude and response.
4. Avoid comparisons and practice
gratitude instead -
There’s a great poem by Kurt Vonnegut about
his conversation with author Joseph Heller
during a party hosted by a billionaire. When
Vonnegut asks Heller how he feels knowing
that this billionaire makes more money in a
single day than Heller will ever earn from sales
of his novel Catch-22, Heller responds that he
has something that the billionaire will never
have: the knowledge that he’s got enough.
This poem vividly illustrates what research
corroborates: Happy people don’t need to
engage in social comparisons. Instead, they
practice gratitude for what they have—a good
way to increase optimism and well-being.
While people vary considerably in how much
they engage in social comparison, those of
us with a more negative mindset find it hard
to avoid, particularly on social media. Most
people post only the good parts of their lives—
successful kids, fabulous vacations, impressive
careers—which can lead us to believe that our
own lives don’t measure up.
This may be why college students believe that
they experience more negative events (e.g.,
bad grades) and fewer positive events (e.g., fun
parties) than their peers, which makes them
lonely and dissatisfied with life. In contrast,
college students encouraged to practice
gratitude by counting their blessings tend to
be happier than their peers.
LIFESTYLE
If you find yourself in a comparison trap,
try quitting your social media habit, or at
least shifting how you think about the overly
positive portrayals you find there. Instead
of feeling sad about how your life doesn’t
measure up, focus on the very real things that
are good in your life—e.g., my kid’s not going to
be valedictorian, but he’s got a great group of
friends; my family’s not spending two weeks in
Tahiti, but we really enjoy our summer on the
Jersey Shore.
5. Find some (any) humor -
In virtually any situation, it is possible to find
some humor, and making an effort to do so can
help you adopt a more positive mindset later
on. I remember when my high school freshman
son Andrew received a failing grade—a 58—
in his first trimester of Spanish. Although it
worried me, he was able to find the humor
in it, insisting that it wasn’t an F; it was an
F+! And Andrew’s optimistic interpretation
actually paid off: At his high school graduation,
he received the award for “most improved,”
and, ironically, he’s now a college junior
majoring in Spanish!
Finding humor helps people cope with
the small irritations of daily life, but it is
particularly important in coping with serious
life circumstances. For example, people with
fibromyalgia (a debilitating and chronic
condition marked by widespread bodily pain)
who relied on smiling and laughter to deal
with small daily life stressors—such as a waiter
spilling water on you—reported lower levels
of psychological distress and fewer physical
symptoms. This ability to take things in stride
reduces stress and its negative effects on
physical and psychological well-being.
So, the next time you are in a dark or trying
situation, try humor. Remind yourself that
this situation will probably make for a good
story later, and try to crack a joke about it. Say
you’re laid off; imagine the most absurd way
you could spend your last day, or the most
ridiculous job you could pursue next—like
kangaroo handler or bubblegum sculptor.
Allowing yourself to experience humor can
take the edge off.
I’ve used these strategies in my own life, and
even though my natural inclination is clearly
not to see the silver lining, I find it easier all the
time to shift my thinking in ways that do make
me happier. Adopting this type of optimistic
worldview has taken me time, energy, and
effort, but it has really paid off. This shift has
helped me feel happier.
If this type of positive mindset doesn’t come
naturally to you, don’t despair. Try to find
someone who can help you cultivate this
skill by being a role model. Remember that
boyfriend of mine who miraculously changed
the tire? He’s now my husband.

India secure 2-1

The Indian Men's hockey team registered a
2-1 victory over Belgium here on Tuesday.
This was team's fourth consecutive win
during their tour of Belgium.
India got off to a brilliant start as they
took a 1-0 lead over Belgium in the 10th
minute after Amit Rohidas converted a
penalty corner.
However, the host managed to score
an equalizer in the 33rd minute. Their
captain Felix Denayer had scored the goal
through a penalty corner, helping his side
level the scores.
Both the teams then competed
aggressively to gain a lead but failed to
break the deadlock. In the last quarter,
