Chapter 1

Introduction

Throughout the years, technology has always been advancing and it has made a

big effect on students especially on their academic performance. Students are so

engrossed in using gadgets that they want to buy the latest device to follow the present

generation trends in terms of entertainment, games, and other social media platforms

like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. As a result, students drawn to gadgets

not only in their everyday lives but including their studies as well.

Gadgets has been found to have its negative impact on students’ study habits.

Students’ waste their time on gadgets instead of worrying their studies. In result, they

have poor performance in school. Due to the upgrade of gadgets, students’ most likely

focus on what entertains them than on what may help them in their studies.Gadgets

impact us in several ways, one of those effects is how gadgets impact students in their

academic performance. According to Mendoza (2012), these gadgets may improve

students or be a distraction in their studies and a reason to fail during their test and

exams.

Kahari (2013) stressed that cell phone is a very important tool for study as most

of the respondents used their phones for study purposes. Cell phones are increasingly

one of the most popular information access devices and what stands out from the study

is the high use of interactive, multi user functions which can at times be disruptive or

beneficial during study. In essence, the study revealed that cell phones are beneficial

for learning but learners have a tendency to abuse them. The presence of cell phones
presents a host of options and challenges for today’s students. Cell phone is undeniably

convenient, helpful tools for study. However, it can be a hurtful source of distraction

depending on the attitude and use pattern of a student.

Similarly, Coughlan (2015) emphasized that students are always busy sending

and receiving messages while studying. As a result, they got lower score in the test and

were less effective at tasks such as note taking. This generation of "voracious texters"

might be affected by so many online distractions. When students did not use mobiles,

they were better at being able to recall information. In addition he said, mobiles and

portable devices are now such a pervasive part of young people's lives, how much

students could really study at the same time as interacting online.

Today mobile phones easily promote collaborative and different types of learning

through their wireless connection to the internet. Their adoption in learning processes

by the higher institution management as student study habits and communication

device tools is useful. In the classroom, cellphone is to motivate students to be more

engaged to the lesson promoting learner centered participation. The impacts of mobile

phone technologies on learning are, collaboration and motivation enhancing students,

parents and teachers’ education system. mobile phone portability enables student

learning to be ubiquitous in obtaining or retrieving course information through their

mobile phones as they are carried from class to class or wherever. Their portability can

improve a wide variety of learning settings, namely a field trip, the classroom, or outside

the campus. Collaboration Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter accessed on

students’ mobile phones allow students to form groups to distribute and add

together their knowledge, and share information with ease, and this could result in
a more successful collaborative learning. The use of mobile phones results in

increasing parents’ involvement in education, and thus their children’s learning And

capabilities motivation where mobile phones are incorporated in a large classroom,

students appear to be more engaged in learning processes. Mobile phones in

education increase students’ will to learn. They take the initiative in using the device as

a learning tool. Teachers report that the use of mobile phones in learning increases

group participation in activities done during learning in class.

The aim of this research is to assess the impact of mobile phones in learning as

they enhance student’s study habits in different ways to the study habits of Grade 12

Senior High School. The researchers want to know the gadgets impact in students’

learning and aimed to show the readers the benefits of privileges that they will get from

the findings that the researcher will acquire through the causes of their study.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents a review of related literature and study which were used by

the researchers as a frame of technology dependency in conceptualizing their study. Due

to the pervasive growth of technology over the years, a number of pertinent studies and

writings from various points of view have been published. The positive and negative effect

between the cited studies and researcher’s proposed study are discussed briefly at the

end of discussion.

On Gadget

Tech Crates (2012), one cannot even dare to imagine life without smart phones,

cell phones, laptops, tablets, iPods and so on because today’s gadgets are one of the

ways to make life more comfortable and easier. Shy (2010) says that no one can deny

the fact that gadgets have not only simplified the lives of people but also made them more

comfortable and luxurious. Indeed, these gadgets really made a huge impact in people’s

lives and became part of it.

Gadgets used in Learning

Today’s classrooms are equipped with the latest technology to enhance

instruction (Gammuac, 2013). Technology users are moving towards being more

mobile, and teachers and students are a significant part of that trend. On 2013, Lenovo,

the world’s top PC vendor reported that they sold more smartphones and tablets than

PCs for the first time ever.Whether a student is listening to his own music while

studying, or a teacher is playing an audio book to her students, mp3 players are an

increasingly common sight in schools. Both teachers and students can make full use of

mp3 players in their school activities (Gammuac, 2013).

Zucker& Light (2009), providing computers to schools increases the technology

skills of teachers and students in both the developed and the developing world. Laptop

programs increase students' engagement with academic work and school, improve

technology skills, and have positive effects on students' writing. Research in many

nations suggests that laptop programs will be most successful as part of comprehensive

initiatives that also address changes in education goals, curricula, teacher training, and

assessment.

An analysis of effective technology use for at-risk students found that simply

replacing teachers with computer-based instruction typically yields no learning benefits.

Rather, blending leads to higher engagement and learning gains (Darling-Hammond et

al., 2014).

Gross (2009), people are very frequent in use of media and modern technologies

in communication at home or at work and feel hard to survive in the absence of modern
means of communications. With the advent rapid new technologies; digital societies are

shaping all across andpeople are relying mainly on these resources from information,

education, and entertainment to social interaction.

Clegg and Bailey (2008) assert that with the utilization of mobile devices such as

laptops and tablet computers, the learning process for the students become more fun

and conducive due to the user-interactivity and appealing visuals present in these

learning tools. Additionally, a vast collection of learning games and applications exist for

these mobile devices, and as a matter of fact, there are about 96,000 educational

applications available (App Store Metrics, 2013).

Former Philippine President - Benigno Aquino announced during the launch of the

country’s K-12 curriculum that the government eyes the use of tablet computers in public

schools in lieu of traditional textbooks (Enterprise Innovation, 2012). Furthermore, there

exist various programs by the government, non-government organizations and private

corporations in the Philippines that aim to provide one laptop computer per child. With the

presence of laptops in the classrooms, students become more engaged and involved in

school-related activities (Oquias, 2011).
