Faces About the Cross

FOR A FEW minutes let us look at the faces

about the cross. Our Saviour was cru-

cified near the gate of the city and there-
fore near a road, no doubt the main road
leading north out of Jerusalem. It was a
place where many passing by beheld Him.
(\1atthew 2.7:39.) And there were many
who stood by to see the sight, as we read
in Luke 23:48. There were also present the
rulers and priests, the four soldiers (John
19:23, 24), the two criminals, Simon of
Cyrene who carried the cross, many women,
including the mother of our Lord, His aunt,
Mary Magdalene, and Salome (Mark 15:-
40, 41), the apostle J 01111, and many of
Christ's acquaintances. (Luke 23:49.) Some-
one, speaking of these faces about the cross,
called them "cameos of Calvary." And so
they are-never-to-be-forgotten pictures. In
them we see reflected every attitude of man
toward Christ.
Just look at them! There they are-the
ones who hated Him and the ones who
loved Him, the ones who were ignorant and
the ones who didn't care, and then the mob

How often has it been sadly true that a
crowd, swayed by strong leaders, will do
what they would never do as individuals.
As you pray in these latter days, think of
those faces about the cross. Our whole
world was there. In those faces of hate, of
love, of blind indifference, of careless cur-

the attitude of everyone in this old world
as we all gather about the cross of Christ.
