As a teenager, I often felt like music saved my life. The

intimacy of lyrics, the emotional release, a momentary
sense of belonging. So I’m a particular mush when it

comes to artists who’ve truly changed people’s lives and

care about more than selling records.
I can’t muster adequate words to describe how
ecstatic I am to have Lady Gaga on our Best of Beauty
cover. She’s not only had a massive year on the awards
circuit for A Star Is Born; she’s also just given birth to a
new venture that’s intensely meaningful to her: her beauty
brand, Haus Laboratories.
She practices and preaches about the transforma-
tional power of beauty. Creative and risk-taking with her
look, Gaga has often subverted the image of a pop star.
I’m convinced that she—like Rihanna (who covered this
issue last year)—can pull off any look. She’s that rare pea-
cock who can switch lanes from goth to glam rock to
classic Hollywood leading lady in the blink of an eye.
Gaga’s unapologetic sense of individuality has
changed many fans’ lives. So I was touched to hear how
much she says beauty saved hers. She teared up talking
to executive beauty director Jenny Bailly about how
beauty and her makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, (who did her
makeup for our cover shoot) have inspired her. “I love
Sarah so much,” she said, her voice cracking. “She’s liter-
ally picked me up off the floor and put makeup on my
face to change my whole day.”
So we celebrate the joyful, mood-altering, transforma-
tional power of beauty together in the pages of this Best
of Beauty issue, our most iconic of the year—the one that
many readers dog-ear and shop from and hang onto for
ages. In the four years that I’ve been at Allure, it’s been a
joy (and sometimes a pain!) to lug home bags upon bags
filled with products, slather myself with creams, swatch
highlighters, and mask my days away to help scrutinize
the 7,000 or so products we test for these awards.
But I’m infinitely proud of the work that the Allure team
put in here. We hope you enjoy it.

is it a magnificent leather
makeup, Sarah Tanno, who
has worked with the Lady
“pretty much every day since
2014,” Tanno says. And now,
Allure cover, the direction
is a hair more literal: Gaga
as Warrior Goddess, a con-

which plastic straws are illegal in
some parts of the country and cof-

tional Coastal Cleanup, a total of
72,708 tampons and tampon appli-
cators were picked up from
beaches, says Allison Schutes, a
director at Ocean Conservancy.
And that’s the stuff that was big
enough to spot: Tampon applica-
tors often break down into smaller
pieces of plastic and stay in the
ocean for centuries, where they
are very likely to get eaten by fish.
So here’s what you do: Get over
the gross-out factor and try more
sustainable (and cost-saving) alter-
natives. A few options: a washable
fabric pad or a panty with built-in
protection in place of disposable
pads and liners (we like the
snap-on Lunapad Performa Pads
or the Thinx Period-Proof Under-
wear), and a menstrual cup (such
as the Lunette Menstrual Cup)

After decades of experimentation

and frustration with the lack of

products available for kinky-
curly hair, actor Tracee Ellis Ross
did something about it. That
something is Pattern, a hair-care
line for 3B to 4C (that’s tightly to
very tightly wound) curls. “All my
life, I’ve been looking for the right
conditioners for my hair—I have
four to six different curl patterns.
The selection for curly, coily,
and tight textures is so limited,”
Ross says. Over the course of six
months, she (and testers with a
variety of textures) tried more
than 74 different iterations of what
would ultimately become Pattern’s
seven products: a hydrating
shampoo, three conditioners with
varying levels of intensity, one
leave-in conditioner, an argan
oil serum, and a lighter jojoba oil
serum. In case it’s not obvious,
Ross was exacting. She wanted
the conditioners to do more than
tame frizz: “Does it actually create
good curls? Some conditioners
make my hair soft,” she says, “but
there is no curl definition or curl
activation.” And product alone

won’t do the trick. “A shower
brush, hair clip, and towel are
really important,” she adds. To that
end, Ross also designed a Pattern
microfiber towel (to coddle
instead of crush coils when you
dry them), a shower brush (to
distribute conditioner evenly), and
a hair clip (to keep tendrils intact
when you pull up your hair). If
you’re keeping track, that’s a whole
lotta products. Her wash-and-go
look involves the shampoo, the
Medium conditioner, the leave-in,
and all three tools. But for Ross
the effort is worth it: “We get to
allow our crowns to flourish as
they are—electric, beautiful, and

everyone else’s in the bridal party).

Toupee tape isn’t glamorous—but if
anyone’s having trouble keeping their
dress up or their chest in, you’ll be
glad you have it on hand. (Its useful-
ness, I have come to find out, is com-
mon knowledge among Louisiana
debutantes; I was in one’s New Year’s
Eve wedding at a family mansion out-
side of New Orleans.) And don’t forget
toothpaste, an extra toothbrush (I get
asked for these staples more often
than anything), and Dove Dry Spray
Antiperspirant (fashion-industry peo-
ple have told me they use this exclu-
sively when they wear couture
because it won’t leave marks).
GET RID OF BAGS
Rehearsal-dinner hors d’oeuvres and
cocktails can make your face look its
puffiest the next morning. Reduce the
effect by moving a jade board (also
called a gua sha stone) or roller with
slow and gentle sweeping motions
from the center of your face outward
along your jawline, cheekbones, and
brow bones. Prep your skin with a
facial oil and mist so the tool can slide
easily, and make sure to do at least five
strokes in each area to see a differ-
ence. Then tap on a depuffing eye gel
with film formers that help constrict
bags on the spot, like Dr. Brandt No
More Baggage Eye De-Puffing Gel.

PRE - PHOTOSHOP YOURSELF
When photographers retouch close-
ups, they often use the “dodging” tool
to make eyes look brighter and whiter.
Happily, it’s easy to get this effect in
every shot (even the really large group
photos) if you use whitening eye
drops. Dermatologist friends swear by
Bausch + Lomb Lumify drops, which
make redness disappear for several
hours at a time. (I also like Visine Maxi-
mum Strength Redness Relief Formula
and Rohto Cooling Eye Drops.) If you
want to go the extra mile, color con-
tacts that are just a shade warmer than
your natural eye color can make your
irises look extra bright. Just test-drive
them beforehand—if people can’t put
their finger on what’s changed about
your look, you have a winner.
GET UNREAL VOLUME
When you want your hair’s body to last
all night, work R+Co Rodeo Star Thick-

hair before blowing it dry. For even
more fullness, bring your own clip-in
hair extensions. (Don’t feel like you
have to choose your exact hair color. A
shade just lighter or darker than your

but you can reuse them, and your regu-
lar hairstylist can cut them to a length
that looks natural for you. We like the

that lasts beyond the big night, tape-in

GLOW FROM THE NECK DOWN
Despite the natural tint in my skin (I’d
consider myself a brown girl), I like the
way a fake tan balances out the harsh
lights of the camera flash and how it
looks in daytime photos. It’s especially
useful since the style du jour of most
wedding photographers is to wash out
the color palette for a more old-timey
feel. (Jergens Natural Glow Wet Skin
Moisturizer gives a subtle tint.) If you
go for a professional spray tan, shave
beforehand; doing so afterward makes
newly tinted skin look patchy. Or if a
tan isn’t your thing, exfoliate and mois-
turize with a lotion that’s rich in hyal-

It was lunchtime in Paris, 1793, when
the grave diggers tasked with keeping
watch over Marie Antoinette’s
guillotined corpse decided to take a
break, giving Marie Grosholtz a brief
but valuable window of time to take a
wax imprint of the late queen’s head.
Before photography, death masks
were used as records of a person’s
likeness for bust- or statue-making
purposes, and during la Révolution, the
busts of slain nobles were displayed as
totems of the people’s victory.
(Grosholtz, a talented wax artisan, was
attempting to score points with the
proletariat after almost nine years
living at Versailles, teaching sculpting
to princesses.) Within the next decade,
Grosholtz would marry, become Marie
Tussaud, and move to London, where
she’d exhibit her growing collection of
macabre wax sculptures to an eager
public for profit.
Two hundred years later, her
dazzling empire sprawls across four
continents and 23 cities, and we
continue to benefit from the spoils of
the French Revolution by having the
opportunity to appear in photos next to
note-perfect depictions of celebrities.
This is how I meet Priyanka Chopra
Jonas, tilting her head ever so slightly
backward and dangling her fingers a
few inches from her mouth, as if about
to eat them like French fries. This is the
pose Chopra Jonas had insisted on
when her Madame Tussauds wax
sculpture was being rendered months
earlier, and now it is the pose she is
trapped in for eternity. The deft artisans
at Tussauds will age it as deemed
necessary, carving crow’s-feet when
they come home to roost, shading the
skin to replicate the merciless passage
of time. If Chopra Jonas tattoos the
Pittsburgh Steelers logo on her cheek,
there will be somebody standing by to
carefully etch it into the wax record.
Immediately upon exiting the
elevator on the ninth floor of the Tus-
saudsplex, which stretches between

Next to an alcoholic slushie bar there is
Taylor Lautner, whose 2019 relevance
nobody is able to properly explain,
other than that he is extremely popular
to be photographed next to. In the real
world, Lautner might object to a fan
wrapping their arm around him and
snapping a photo without permission.
In the Madame Tussauds universe,
such behavior is encouraged, and
Lautner beams indiscriminately. “We
want guests to feel that they’re in that
moment [with the celebrity],” says
Amanda So, Tussauds’s London-based
figure production and product
excellence manager. As soon as a
prospective subject has an opening in
their schedule, the Tussauds team
scrambles to fill it, conducting
measurement sessions in hotel suites
and backstage at concerts, kicking off
a five-month development process.
About 200 measurements are taken
while the team takes notes on the way

a subject expresses themselves, how
the radius of a dimple might shorten
with laughter, how the irises soften
when encountered up close.

subject. In response to whether or not
a wax portrait is more forgiving to
imperfections than in real life, Kim
Schrader, the lead creative artist of
Madame Tussauds North America,
gently eludes: “Who doesn’t want to
look their best?” The head is made of
wax, and the body is fiberglass—a
less precious material capable of
withstanding hundreds of embraces.
Individual human hairs are inserted into
the scalp, eyebrows, and lashes. To
approximate the look of skin, the wax is
first prepped with oil paints and then
“makeup” is applied (consisting of
more oil paint, though occasionally the
team will crush and mix in pigment
from beauty products to get a more
authentic finish). Before the museum
opens, a team will bounce from
sculpture to sculpture, painting skin
and curling hair, which is shampooed
and conditioned regularly.
An unsettling hall of mirrors
opens onto the Madame Tussauds
New York Presents Broadway exhibit,
complete with a singing sculpture of
the Cats star Grizabella, animated
by projecting a close-up of a live
person’s face singing “Memory” onto
a blank mannequin face. A library of
historical figures spills out into a
round, Georgian colonnade filled with
wax heads of state. All are more or
less to scale, allowing the viewer to
compare their own dimensions with
those of Richard Nixon (very tall) and
Meghan Markle (regular size).
In the rear of the room, Mr. and Mrs.
Obama flank a podium affixed with the
presidential seal, staring across the
floor at Donald Trump, who grips his
belt behind the Resolute Desk, eyes
drifting westward.
Madame Tussauds the institution is
apolitical, while Marie Tussaud the
historical figure is not, having honed
her craft with her fabulous death masks
of slain aristocrats. Almost two
centuries after her death, Tussaud has
resumed endearing herself to nobility:
Schrader reveals that, by her estimate,
nobody has sat for more sculpture
sessions than Queen Elizabeth II.
There are thousands of exhibits
encased within the House of Tussauds.
A Fashion Room. A Sports Room. A
descent into the New York City subway
system from Ghostbusters. Fright is
somewhat integral to the Madame
Tussauds experience—Marie Tussaud’s
original gallery in London featured
mostly life-size replicas of famous
murderers, plus her hits from the
Revolution. The attractions included
Williams Burke and Hare, who in the
early 19th century were convicted of
murdering at least 15 people and
selling their bodies to anatomists (for
science!), and William Corder, who
killed and buried his fiancée in a barn
because he was stressed out. His
overgrown eyebrows are preserved in
stunning fidelity.
But what Marie Tussaud perhaps
failed to realize is that a lightless
labyrinth filled with near-perfect
depictions of celebrity life in its myriad
forms is itself a horrifying premise, one
that does not require additional spooky
elements. Humans are equipped to
recognize other actual humans, but this
instinct is quickly thwarted by the
Madame Tussauds experience, which
teaches you the valuable lesson that
sometimes reality is an impeccable wax
illusion, but you can still take a photo.

as a thoughtful voice with a maturity far beyond
her 19 years. As she takes on a new role as an
ambassador for Bobbi Brown, we sat down with
her while she parsed the intersection of beauty,
race, and taking up space.
I’ve been in this industry from a young age,
and a side effect of that is getting used to
seeing yourself in makeup from a very young
age. People say, “Oh, you’re going to be on
camera, so here’s some concealer, here’s
some this.” When I was 14, Mommy had to
take me through an undoing process of what
had been built up in my head. Like being in
the makeup trailer, and makeup artists would
put my lashes on and say, “There you are,” like
I wasn’t there before. I had been on HD cam-
eras for so long, I felt I needed this [makeup]
to be pretty for the world. On my days off, I
was still like, “Where’s my concealer, where’s
my blender?” It didn’t feel enjoyable. It took a
year-plus for me to learn to feel comfortable
in my skin. Now when I want to use makeup,
it’s because I feel like doing it, not because I
feel like it’s a necessity.
Growing out my unibrow was also a turn-
ing point for me. It may sound trivial, but it
goes back to the period of time when I would

out of the pool and seeing the black streaks
on my arms. I naturally had a lot of hair and
felt really insecure about that in that moment.
appreciating my heritage, the two sides of
my family that came together to make me
right now. My family in Iran, family in
Wisconsin, family in Mississippi, the Jewish-
roots side of the family.
Again, it may seem surface level, but one
[symbolic] thing about my curly hair is that I
can’t help but to take up space. There are
times when I don’t feel like taking up space,
but because my hair does, I match that.
Those are the days I’m grateful for, those
days I walk into a room and I have to choose
to be present, have to choose to be okay with
the amount of space or attention I take up. I
was reading a philosophy paper about how
our patriarchal society tells us [women] again
and again to take up as little space as possi-
ble, to not use our full bodies, because that is
unladylike. And then when you add on the
layers of my identity of being a woman of
color, or being in the LGBTQ community, of
being an immigrant, a first-generation, or
whatever the intersection is, it only gets more
complicated. The idea [for so long has been]
that your equity relates to how fast you can
conform to mainstream culture or how fast
you can disappear. We’ve been told to work
backwards: “Look conventionally pretty, and
then you will feel confident.” So there’s some-
thing about just embracing your unique
physical features that ends up meaning so
much more than just “Oh, I like my face.” It
means I like myself. And to like yourself can

DERMATOLOGISTS ARE BEGINNING TO QUESTION WHAT THE FUTURE
HOLDS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT. BY COTTON CODINHA
Plastic surgery can hurt. Large-volume lipo-
suction, tummy tucks, breast augmentation,
and the like. Depending on the procedure, you
could be in for an uncomfortable couple of
days. Up until recently, many plastic surgeons
didn’t give as much thought to prescribing nar-
cotics like Vicodin, Percocet, and oxycodone to
address the issue and maintain a level of com-
fort for patients. But as the country grapples
with an opioid epidemic that claimed tens of
thousands of lives last year alone, doctors who
perform cosmetic procedures are taking a
closer look at pain management.
“Ten years ago, when I was doing liposuc-
tion, I would send a patient home with a pre-
scription for 10 Percocet,” says Cheryl Karcher, a
New York City dermatologist. “And that was
considered a little bit by most doctors’ stan-
dards then.” But in the past six years, Karcher
has not prescribed a single narcotic for liposuc-
tion patients. “I use so much local anesthetic
during the procedure, and then Tylenol is plenty
[after that],” she says. “If you ask my patients,
you won’t get one single complaint.”
In Karcher’s opinion, writing that Percocet
prescription just isn’t worth the risk. “You never
know who has that genetic predisposition for
addiction. If there’s a family history, there’s a
larger chance of the patient having the genes for
addiction,” she says. “You can give opioids to
plenty of patients that take them, it kills the pain,
and then they never take them again. But [some]
are going to take them and say, ‘Oh, my God,
this makes me feel so much better. I’m going to
take more.’ You never know who that’s going to
be. I didn’t know. I had no clue.”
About 10 years ago, Karcher became addicted
to opioids after they were prescribed to her fol-
lowing several orthopedic surgeries. She has
been in recovery since 2010 (and is still a
board-certified dermatologist).
While Karcher is passionate about not pre-
scribing narcotics to her patients, she recognizes
that, as a dermatologist, the recovery from the
procedures she does is less intense than more-in-
vasive procedures that plastic surgeons perform.
In that field, narcotics are often prescribed for
controlling pain after major operations like
large-volume liposuction and tummy tucks—and
narcotics can be necessary. But when possible,
some plastic surgeons are finding alternatives
and using anti-inflammatories, local anesthetics,

and numbing medications to attack different
pain pathways. In some cases, patients are
demanding it. “For the first time ever in my prac-
tice, I will have people say, ‘I have had several
friends die of an opioid overdose. Please do not
prescribe me any pain medication,’” says Melissa
Doft, a plastic surgeon in New York City. “When I
was in training, you rarely heard that.”
As reducing narcotics use becomes a greater
priority, innovations are happening. “There are
some things that plastic surgeons can do to really
decrease the narcotic requirements for a lot of
plastic surgery procedures and get patients off
them a lot quicker,” says Jeffrey M. Kenkel, a plas-
tic surgeon in Dallas. Things like Experal. “It has
completely changed recovery for patients,” he
says. “It’s a drug that contains the longer-acting
numbing agent bupivacaine and binds to fat mol-
ecules in a microscopic honeycomb. We inject it
at the surgical incision site and in some cases use
ultrasound to place it exactly where the nerves
are. It dissolves over the course of 72 hours.”
Of course, not every effective alternative
needs to be revolutionary. “People pooh-pooh
Tylenol,” says New York City–based plastic sur-
geon Adam Kolker. “But it’s extraordinarily effec-
tive, especially when taken in frequent doses.”
He tells patients to take it after even major sur-
geries like breast augmentation. Often he’ll also
use an anti-inflammatory steroid called
Decadron intravenously during surgery, with
intravenous Tylenol to help reduce pain later.
Kenkel’s presurgery pain-management plan
always includes Celebrex, an anti-inflammatory
arthritis medication and pain reliever, and a nerve
medication called Lyrica. The first is taken the day
before surgery, and the second several hours
before and for four to five days afterward. “That
covers a lot of patients’ discomfort,” says Kenkel.
Before taking out a prescription pad, doctors
are also being more vigilant about screening
patients for a history of addiction. But as
Karcher learned, often it’s not possible to see
drug dependency coming. For those who suffer
from addiction or have a family history of it but
for whom surgery necessitates narcotics, there
are pain management and addiction therapists
who can help monitor behavior when taking a
small, controlled prescription, says Doft. But
that requires self-awareness and prescience
that aren’t always there.
Unfortunately, as the future of pain manage-
ment rolls slowly forward, the rates of opioid
abuse in the U.S. are climbing steadily, with no
abatement in sight. The magnitude of the prob-
lem cannot be overstated. “People are dying from
opioid overdose every day,” says Karcher. “The
equivalent of an airplane full of people. Every day.”
But at least in the world of postoperative care,
there is some hope for a narcotic-free future. “As
we have a better understanding about pain recep-
tors, we hope to have more products we can
inject into the surgical site for pain management,”
says Kenkel. “We may even see sutures that are
laced with certain types of growth factors and
pain relievers that will deliver medication right at
that microscopic level within the incisions. I think
we’re going to see a lot of innovations in pushing
pain control away from narcotics.”
They won’t come a moment too soon.

Meet the world’s first...bowdeream! What, not so catchy? Maybe not. But calling this a “compact foundation” is a
misnomer. Because when you wipe it over your skin (with a sponge, brush, or your fingers), it morphs from a
balm to a cream to a powder instantly. It all feels very cool—it’s the closest makeup gets to a magic act—but it’s
not just a gimmick. Because the foundation starts out as a balm, the team at Armani was able to pack in a really
high concentration of pigment (15 percent). “That’s the kind of coverage you’d normally get from a much heavier
foundation—the kind that can look mask-like on skin—but as this formula transforms to a cream it becomes
featherlight,” says cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson. “The way it melts into skin as it transitions from one phase to
the next is unbelievable.” When you put it on, encapsulated oils burst open and the balm becomes a cream that
spreads easily for smooth, even coverage. While that’s happening, a second kind of capsule in the formula starts
evaporating, releasing ultrafine powders that settle onto skin—they contain an oil- and water-absorbing agent
(mineral perlite) that repels humidity, sweat, and oil for long-wearing coverage. Our tester was grateful to find a
full-coverage foundation with such a natural-looking finish, as well as a creamy foundation that works on oily skin
since it dries down to a powder. If your skin is dry, however, prep with moisturizer first to avoid creasing (a good

Customizable skin care is very trendy. And very
time-consuming: Lengthy questionnaires, mixing
stuff, and a lot of other steps that make it personal

easier but still personalized way to moisturize. It
works like this: First, at a Clinique counter or online,
choose your base (a light lotion, a watery jelly, or

percent moisturizer, 10 percent actives. The packag-
ing is “one of the most breakthrough concepts I’ve
seen in some time,” says Wilson. “Customizing prod-
ucts with boosters isn’t a first, but what’s unique
about these cartridges is that they preserve the
integrity of the active ingredients.” That solves one
of the key problems associated with these types of
systems. “With personalized skin care, you never
want the actives to be mixed in and left in the base
formula for long periods of time because there may
be stability and compatibility issues,” says King. “In
Clinique iD, the ingredients are combined fresh each
time you pump the bottle.” If you need a little guid-

There are already a gazillion (give or take) keratin treatments for strengthening
dyed and damaged hair. Does the world really need one more? If it’s this one,
then absolutely yes. A brief background: Keratin works by replacing lost levels of

protein in hair and plugging up the holes that weaken strands. “But most prod-
ucts contain hydrolyzed keratin. It’s chemically processed and chopped into itty
bits so it can penetrate hair, even though chopped-up keratin isn’t the most effi-

cient way to fill in the holes,” says Wilson. “Virtue is the first brand I know of to
use a powdered keratin taken from human hair. It contains the whole protein—it’s
not chopped up—so it fills in damaged areas of hair better.” They’ve formulated
this keratin (which was discovered by bioscientists for healing soldiers’ battle
wounds and is exclusive in cosmetics to Virtue) as a loose powder that your col-
orist can add to in-salon dyes and bleaches. “It binds to your hair during the
coloring process, making it stronger and better able to withstand the harshness
of dyeing,” says Wilson. That means it improves how your hair takes color, so
you’ll get a truer shade; also, just by filling in porous holes in hair, there’s more
surface area for dye to adhere to. And unlike other professional keratin and
bonding treatments, ColorKick isn’t an extra service, so it doesn’t add to the
processing time. (You can use it and Olaplex, which helps prevent future dam-

This little compact is filled with a tinted wax that’s “an entirely new
approach to brow shaping,” says Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist
and founder of beautystat.com. It’s got a hold factor that is hard to
believe until you try it firsthand. “Brow hairs naturally grow in side-
ways, which is why it’s so tough to get them to stay brushed up with
most gels and pomades,” he says. “This formula uses lye to tempo-
rarily straighten hairs so they lift up more easily.” (Lye is safe for use
around the eye area in such a small amount, says Macrene Alexia-
des, a dermatologist in New York City. It’s even used in many eye
creams to adjust pH.) And because the wax uses lye instead of the
stiff resins most brow products rely on for hold, there’s zero crunch-
iness or flakes. Wet a spooley brush, swipe it over the wax (water will
make the lye bubble—a cool, if superfluous, effect), then brush
through your brows, and the wax will be set and stay put until you
wash it off. Our tester loved how the formula gave her brows a cool
brushed-up look that lasted all day. It also added a soft, subtle tint,
but she followed up with her usual pencil for extra definition.

RODAN + FIELDS
SPOTLESS 2 STEP TREATMENT
“When I put on acne products, I always run the
risk of irritation,” says Mona Gohara. (And she’s
a dermatologist.) “It’s the fait accompli of many
acne medications—the red, scaly residue that
everyone who’s zapping zits dreads.” The scien-
tists at Rodan + Fields set out to make one of
the best acne ingredients—benzoyl peroxide—
nonirritating and more effective. That meant
putting a benzoyl peroxide lotion in a
dual-chamber pump. “When the formulas in
each chamber release, they create oxygen
while mixing [on the skin],” says King. “The
release of oxygen feels cooling and refreshing,
unlike many benzoyl peroxide products that
can feel drying.” The fact that the benzoyl per-
oxide is dissolved in the oxygen-rich formula
also makes it less irritating. “The benzoyl perox-
ide penetrates deeper into pores [than tradi-
tional benzoyl peroxide products] so it’s not just
sitting on the skin’s surface,” says Gohara. “This
creates less irritation because the benzoyl per-
oxide spreads out more evenly—it’s like spread-
ing wasabi among many pieces of sushi instead
of putting a hunk on one piece, which is going
to burn.” And the oxygen is an acne treatment
in its own right. In recent years, we’ve learned
that a lack of oxygen deep inside pores makes
acne-causing bacteria go berserk. Pumping
oxygen into pores is a whole new way to keep
these bacteria in check. “When P. acnes [bacte-
ria] are inside pores, there is less oxygen and
they go into destructive mode and create
inflammation,” says Gohara. “This system deliv-
ers oxygen into pores so the acne-causing bac-
teria don’t create a facial mutiny [breakouts].
The science behind this product is remarkable.”
It shrunk overnight the period pimple Gohara
gets every single month, with zero redness or
flaking. “Plus I could apply it on my brown skin
without any of the usual white residue—that in
and of itself is a breakthrough,” she says. There
are two products in the Spotless system, the
lotion and a cleanser, and Rodan + Fields tested
both on notoriously hard-to-treat teenage acne:

Cat-eye liner tends to fall into two categories: graceful, elegant,
swooshing flips at the outer edges of the eyes—or the “Did you use

Paris studied over 100 different eye shapes and spent two years
fine-tuning a winged liner stencil, tweaking its size and angle 63
times until they had the perfect swoosh to flatter every eye shape.
The winner: a stencil that creates a 45-degree flick about half an
inch long. “Other stencils are designed to go over most or all of your
lid to create the cat eye from start to finish, but everyone’s lids are
shaped differently, so no one stencil will fit all eyes the same way,”
says Orrea Light, head of product development for L’Oréal Paris.
This tool helps you draw just the flick. “No matter your eye shape,
when you line up this stencil with the outer corner of each eye, it
gives the same size, angle, and length wing on both sides. Then all
you have to do is line each lid, and you’ve got your finished look.”
The liner itself has both impressively rich color and a steady flow, a
combo that’s hard to achieve; usually adding more pigment to liq-
uid liners makes them skip (the extra pigment clogs the ink car-
tridge). L’Oréal Paris did away with the cartridge and just filled the
inside of the pen with ink, a simple but game-changing tweak. Our
testers found it took a few tries to position the stencil just right, but
then it created professional-looking flicks on a range of eye shapes
and sizes; the results were a billion times better than anything the
cat-eye novices could have done on their own. The stencil clicks
into a slot on the pen’s cap so you don’t lose it, and it’s thick enough
to resist bending and cracking in your makeup bag. (We found the
liner wore off after sweating, so you may want to swap in your favor-
ite long-wearing liner for big nights out.)

much on the humanness. But in
the name of better customized
at-home hair color, L’Oréal has
married human instinct with AI.
They tasked an army of top col-
orists, engineers, and data scien-
tists with developing an online
salon consultation that virtually
mirrors the real thing—except it’s
also got a back end that takes a

ECZEMA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS)
DUPIXENT, the first eczema treatment of its kind, is not a steroid.
It is a biologic treatment that helps manage the inflammation
deep beneath the surface that causes the flare-ups you see and

What is DUPIXENT?
• DUPIXENT is a prescription medicine used:

while preventing severe asthma attacks and improving your breathing.
• DUPIXENT works by blocking two proteins that contribute to a type of
inflammation that plays a major role in atopic dermatitis and asthma.
• DUPIXENT is not used to treat sudden breathing problems

• DUPIXENT comes as a single-dose pre-filled syringe with needle shield.
• DUPIXENT is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection).
• If your healthcare provider decides that you or a caregiver can give the injections
of DUPIXENT, you or your caregiver should receive training on the right way to
prepare and inject DUPIXENT. Do not try to inject DUPIXENT until you have been
shown the right way by your healthcare provider. In adolescents 12 years of
age and older, it is recommended that DUPIXENT be administered by or under
supervision of an adult.
• If you miss a dose of DUPIXENT, give the injection within 7 days from the missed
dose, then continue with the original schedule. If the missed dose is not given
within 7 days, wait until the next scheduled dose to give your DUPIXENT injection.
• If you inject more DUPIXENT than prescribed, call your healthcare provider
right away.

• Your healthcare provider may prescribe other medicines to use with DUPIXENT.
Use the other prescribed medicines exactly as your healthcare provider tells

Working from a survey of 778
randy respondents, researchers
from Central Queensland Univer-
sity in Australia published a study
last March that showed there are
no major gender differences in
perceived sleep quality and sleep
M O D E R N
latency (how long it takes you to
fall asleep) after an orgasm. The
majority of men and women sur-
veyed felt that orgasms with a
partner led to better sleep quality
and latency, and half felt that
orgasms from masturbation led
to better sleep quality.
But anecdotally, that has not
been the experience of many
women in my life. “It’s like run-
ning six miles right before bed,”
one friend said. “Of course I
can’t sleep after.”
Nicole Prause, founder of
the sex-research lab Liberos,
knows why: She described a
cocktail of hormones that get
released during an orgasm.
Some of those appear to be
tied to sleepiness—Prause has
high hopes for the hormone
vasopressin in particular. But:
“Women appear to call ‘orgasm’
lots of responses that physiolo-
gists would not,” she warns.
“Women may not be having the
high sexual arousal that is asso-
ciated with vasopressin release,
even if they think they are.”
Prause also suggests that a dis-
turbance in routine might be to
blame for postcoital can’t-sleep-
ness. Consistency is one of the
main pillars of sleep-hygiene best

practices: Doctors recommend
deploying a relaxing prebed rou-
tine at the same time every night,
meaning all variables (including
lighting and bedding) should be
kept within a thin margin.
When you have an orgasm
might also influence sleep qual-
ity. Prause hasn’t determined
yet whether it’s best to have sex
or masturbate when you’re in
bed and ready to fall asleep or,
say, 30 minutes before you’re
ready to actually go to bed. It
might take some experimenta-
tion to find a presleep sex rou-
tine that’s right for you.
The way we experience sleep
is as individual and mysterious as
the way we experience sex. I do
believe that there are people
who fall into a deep slumber
immediately after sex, just as
there are women who have
orgasms from penetration alone.

It’s easiest to think of sexsomnia
as a form of sleepwalking, explains
Michael Grandner, the director of
the Sleep and Health Research
Program at the University of Arizona.
Grandner describes it as an
unemotional state—less passion,
more programmed, with a high
incidence of errors. There are
relatively few cases of reported
sexsomnia, likely because a partner
initiating sex in the middle of the
night, however trancelike and
clumsy they appear, would not
automatically indicate a sleeping
disorder. But in cases where sexual
advances are unwanted, the
consequences can be severe. David
C. Brodner, an otolaryngologist
(ear, nose, and throat doctor) and
sleep medicine specialist in Boynton
Beach, Florida, has consulted
on court cases of unwanted sexual
advances where sexsomnia was
in question. “You get incidences of
date rape, molestation,” says
Brodner. “Sexsomnia is quite rare,
though it’s not an urban legend.
It definitely exists.”
Why would an ENT be a useful
source for information regarding
nocturnal unconscious-sex-having?
In some cases, sleep disorders
can begin in the throat: Sleep
apnea is caused when tissue in
the throat collapses and obstructs
the airway, hindering breathing
and interrupting sleep, which can
lead to excessive daytime fatigue
that could trigger sexsomnia
as well, and it might be easier to
spot. Sleep apnea’s calling card
is exhaustion and snoring, but
any kind of sleeping disorder can
have physical indicators. “Sleep
deprivation from anything causes
mental issues: lack of concentration,

poor memory, and decreased
focus,” says Grandner. The best
course of treatment is to visit a
doctor for a sleep study, which can
lead to medication, when needed,
and perhaps better sleep hygiene
(seven to nine hours, no gadgets, no
alcohol). Also: “Interrupting tends
to draw out [the episode] even
longer,” says Grandner. Take the
couch, and call the doctor in the

I love sleep. It’s a time that is free from
decision-making and the expense of
being alive. When I told the person sell-
ing me lavender about my ambition to
sleep perfectly with no technological
aids, she said: “Yes, I love to dream.”
What I didn’t tell her is that dreaming is
irrelevant to me, but I do want to reduce
my midsleep tussling, and I want to wake
up brightly. I think that about 80 percent

huge mess. In waking hours, unreliability
is the charm of the radio. In the vulnera-
ble state of returning to the world, I risk
either blaring car commercials or NPR,
which has no good news for me.
“Definitely don’t do that!” Sunrise told
me. It felt fitting to be mad at an alarm
clock, an indifferent machine with a fas-
cist position on waking me up.
The second alarm beeped at an
increased volume and a rapid pace. I
woke up saying, “I don’t like how this
works; I don’t like how this works.” In ret-
rospect, I admired this alarm clock
because it made complete sentences
available in my little brain before my
eyes were fully open. When I found my
perfect alarm clock, a small Peakeep, it
was instant friendship. It’s simple, but I
can choose a beeping song called
“Jasmine.” While “Jasmine” does have an
arcade-game relationship to melody, it’s
breezy, peaceful, and not chipper.
Now, when I close down the digital
shop and set my alarm, I still suddenly
wonder about the temperature the next
day and whether someone has emailed
me. But it’s much easier to resist check-
ing if you have to walk to the kitchen.

As I set foot in the Mall at Bay Plaza in the Bronx, New York, my sneakers were

soaked through to my socks from an angry rainstorm. I made my way into the
Ulta store, squeaking a trail of water with each step. And there she was, 22-year-
old model Halima Aden, looking as if she’d stepped right off the set of a glossy
fashion editorial—or at the very least had an ability to walk between raindrops.
(In fact, the UNICEF ambassador had just come from a Forbes event that morn-
ing.) She was wearing spindly high heels, a long, swishing dress, and a silver
hijab, its loose end spilling over her right shoulder like a long braid.
With her high cheekbones, bright, lively eyes, and quick smile, it’s not hard
to imagine why Aden is a Sports Illustrated model. (She was the first to wear
both a burkini and a hijab in her SI spread.) I, like the smattering of shoppers in

the store, was standing shyly to the side, in awe of her presence, when I
remembered that we were there to shop together. And that I should probably
introduce myself. Aden swept me into a tight hug, and just like that we were off.
Her first-ever beauty purchase, she told me, was a glittery, rollerball lip gloss
she picked up at Kmart, chaperoned by her older sister. Aden was 12 years old
at the time, though her mom wouldn’t allow her to wear makeup in earnest
until she was 17. As a 13-year-old, though, she got ahold of a contraband tube
of lipstick and eyeliner and used them to create a full face of makeup: The lip-
stick pinch-hit as blush and eye shadow; the eyeliner doubled as a brow

Lady Gaga’s house, one of them at
least, is built into a hill (a Hollywood hill,
but I will give you no indication of which
one because I was asked by three very nice
people not to). When I arrive, I’m ushered
into a room to wait. I am in a basement. If
you are a suburbia-bred American, it’s
probably the basement of your youth: par-
quet floor, a stack of board games in the
corner, those plastic Container Store bins
with drawers that are stuffed with white
things I can only assume are T-shirts from
high school concerts and charity 5Ks.
There is a dry-erase board on one wall.
But then, on a couch in the middle of
the room (white, splattered with multicol-
ored paint), there sits a lovely shopping
bag, fresh and pristine. You might think for
a moment: Is this...the welcome gift that
awaits the guests of Lady Gaga? Of course,
as a journalist, I did not think that, and if it
was a gift I never would have accepted it,
but I’m just saying that that’s what some-
one else might have thought as they sat
down to wait for Lady Gaga. But not me.
Obviously. (It was not a gift.)
Lady Gaga is, however, very generous.
In the first minutes after I ascend the stairs
to meet her, she shares her personal space
with me, opening her arms for a full-body
hug, and then, moments later, gives me
her chair. We stand on the threshold of her
kitchen for a bit, and she introduces me to
the three French bulldogs assembled
there—Asia, Gustav, and Koji—before lead-
ing me down a short, narrow hallway. On
one wall, tucked onto a small shelf, is an
Oscar, the Oscar, “Shallow” etched into the
base. On the other wall, more Grammys
than I can tally while on the move (accord-
ing to the internet, I would probably get to
nine). The office we enter is not much
larger than my own home office in subur-
ban New Jersey. This one, though, has slid-
ing glass doors that open onto a
wraparound deck overlooking much of Los
Angeles (this is almost impossible to find in
New Jersey). It also has a large black glass
conference table in the center, with a snow
white leather high-backed chair on one
side. “You take the boss chair,” Lady Gaga
says as she lowers herself into the smaller
black one opposite me.
I probably don’t need to tell you that my
superior chair does very little to make me
anywhere close to the boss in this room. I
have a solid eight inches on LG, as her
friends call her, but she commands the
space, sitting across from me wearing bal-
lerina posture and a clingy black silk Alexa

 “When I became Lady Gaga when I was younger,
it was because I discovered makeup.”
inspired by a makeup product that
you’ve known and loved but wanted to
improve upon?
Her answer started with: “First and
foremost, I wanted to create the lip pen-
cil of my dreams. I love lip pencil, but for
me there always ends up being some-
thing wrong with them. It’s either drag-
ging or it’s bleeding. With this formula, I
can line my lips beautifully, but most of
the time, I wear it all over my mouth. It
feels like a lipstick, and it does not trans-
fer. Every time I put it on, I have this sigh
of giant, artistic, creative release that I
just—my heart soars.”
Then: superheroes, wings to fly.
And then: “When I became Lady Gaga
when I was younger, it was because I dis-
covered makeup. It means so much to me
on a deep visceral level—the power of
makeup to change how you feel when
you’re at your lowest.”
At 33, Lady Gaga has reached the
highest peaks of fame, wealth, and
cultural currency. She is speaking to
me now literally perched on top of Los
Angeles. But she knows low. She has
spoken very openly about being bullied
in high school, being sexually assaulted
by a music producer at 19, and strug-
gling with the physical pain of fibromy-
algia over the past couple of years. And
then there’s the unrelenting, sometimes
crushing pace. “When I was doing the
Joanne tour [two years ago], I’d been
touring since I was 22 years old. I’d just
done the Super Bowl show, Coachella,
A Star Is Born. I really started to break
down,” says Lady Gaga. “I would do the
show, then I would get on an airplane, go
to another country or state, get off, drive
40 minutes to the hotel, go to sleep,
wake up, do another show. I was dizzy.”
Makeup was often the only thing that
could put a stop to this emotional ver-
tigo, that could put Stefani Germanotta
in a mental place where she could walk
onto a stage and be Lady Gaga for tens
of thousands of people.
“Sarah [Tanno, Lady Gaga’s makeup
artist] would pick me up off the floor, sit
me in a chair, dry my tears, and say, ‘I’m
going to put on your face now,’ ” she
recalls. “If I cried while she was putting on
my makeup, I would apologize, and she
would say, ‘It’s okay. I’ve got you.’”
Lady Gaga is crying at this point. And
apologizing to me.
“Sarah would do my makeup, Freddie
[Aspiras] would do my hair, and they
would hold me and say, ‘Look at yourself.
There’s Lady Gaga. You can do this. Now
go do it.’ And I would go out there, and
the second that spotlight hits me, bam,
I’m in the zone,” she says. “But I can’t do
that without them. That is the power of
glam for me. Not everybody has a Sarah,
but I’m very lucky that I do. And I want this
line to be for the person at home who
needs that pick-me-up. If they use it, or
don’t use it, they can at least look at it and
go, ‘That’s what helps Lady Gaga shine on
her bad days. And I want to shine today.’”
More tears come. Suddenly someone
appears from off-stage (the deck) and
slides a box of tissues across the table
to her. “Oh, thank you. You heard me
crying? Why do I cry when I talk about
makeup all the time?”
I don’t know the answer, but I do know
that this is my second conversation with
Lady Gaga, both about makeup, both
tearful at times. Mostly on her part. But I
did get watery in our first interview when
she told the story that every beauty editor
has heard many times: about being a little
girl watching her mother put on makeup
in the morning. But in Lady Gaga’s telling,
it went beyond cliché: “She would look so,
so beautiful, and so strong. She just had
such a bravery about her, and it was so
inspiring to me. I grew up with this under-
standing that you can be brave in many
different ways, and one of those ways is
makeup.” But the water didn’t come until:
“I really hope that when I have maybe a
little girl one day, or a little boy, and they
see Mommy put her makeup on, that they
have the same experience that I did.”
When Lady Gaga was promoting A
Star Is Born last year, she and Bradley
Cooper told the same story about the day
she did her screen test, which was also
about makeup as a source of power. He
came to her home, and as she descended
the stairs he said, “Take it off,” presenting
a makeup wipe. The goal was to put her in
a more vulnerable state. I ask Lady Gaga if
she too sees these pigments as a kind of
armor. “Does makeup make you feel more
in control? Do you hope this line will bring
other people that feeling?”
The answer: a hard no. “I don’t want
people to have a feeling of control actu-
ally at all,” she says. “I want people to
feel completely liberated by this line, to
do whatever they want with it. Whether
they wear a ton of it, buy it—or don’t. I
just want them to love the message. It’s
like just being excited that there’s a
party going on down the street where
everybody’s invited.”
The Lady Gaga experience has always
been one of celebration and inclusion.
Her 2011 anthem of self-acceptance,
“Born This Way,” became the name of her
foundation, run by her mother, with a
mission to “create a kinder and braver
world…and support the wellness of
young people.” She was a steadfast advo-
cate for legalizing same-sex marriage.
That meat dress? It was a protest against
“Don’t ask, don’t tell.” (“I went to that
awards show with servicepeople who
were discharged from the military
because they were coming out or were
found out,” says Gaga. “I wore meat as a
representation of the fact that we’re all
the same.”) And she wants Haus
Laboratories to be a continuation of her
championing of the LGBTQ+ community,
especially youth. “I would like all gender
identities to know very clearly that they
are included, and never exploited, ever,”
she says. “I want that little boy at home
that might like to be called a girl to say,
‘Mommy, I want to wear Dynasty. It’s a
Glam Attack.’ And then Mommy goes,
‘Oh, my son wants to be called a girl, and
he wants the Glam Attack.’ And then she
goes and she gets it for him. And he uses
it. And then there’s a bond. It’s kind of like
when kids used to come to my shows
with their parents, and they’d lean over
and they’d say, ‘Mommy and Daddy, I’m
gay.’ Or ‘I’m not a boy; I’m a girl.’ Or ‘I’m
not a girl; I’m a boy.’ I have heard those
stories so many times, over and over, for
all of the years that I have been in this
business. And I want the same thing that
I’ve had in my concerts to happen with
this company. If I’m not changing peo-
ple’s lives, what are we doing here?”
There is no philanthropic tie-in to
Haus Laboratories at the moment, but
it’s hard to believe there won’t be down
the line. As I finished this story, the
country was reeling from yet another
spate of mass shootings, and Lady Gaga
had just pledged to bankroll every
unfunded project in 162 classrooms in El
Paso, Dayton, and Gilroy: “I want to
channel my confusion, frustration, and
fury into hope,” she said in a Facebook
post. “Hope that we are there for each
other and for ourselves.”
Creating art, and meaningful
change, out of frustration or pain, bully-
ing or rejection, has transformative
power. If makeup was there to lift Lady
Gaga up off the floor in her darkest
moments, and to give her wings, there’s
a joyful symmetry in that. Because that’s
what she has always done for so many
of us. With this line, she’s putting us all
in the boss chair.

“So I always say I want
to inspire bravery, inspire
kindness, inspire self-

people to see themselves
as they wish to see
themselves. That is the
key. Otherwise you’re
telling people how to be.”

Things is a canonical coming-of-age film,

If your hair is kinky-curly, try the spin on classic Bantu knots at right, says hairstylist Rubi Jones. Instead of tucking
in the ends as you normally would, she left the tips out. Jones recommends starting with moisture-protecting
products (try Aussie Miracle Curls Co-Wash), and smoothing an edge product, like Pantene Pro-V Gold Series Edge
Tamer, over the hairline after it’s dry. For hair that’s straight or wavy, Jones likes the fancified topknot at left: Neaten

The freshest take on eyeliner is a little disjointed, and definitely far-out. Makeup artist Kali Kennedy created the look
by (slowwwwly) sketching the shape of the topmost wing, then the bottom one, with a saturated liner (try Shiseido
MicroLiner Ink or CoverGirl Get in Line Active Liquid Eyeliner). “Start at the center of the lash line and sketch
outward in either direction until it’s as winged out as you’d like,” Kennedy says. When all four flicks are to your liking,
complete the look with brushed-up brows (we like Benefit Gimme Brow+) and a neutral lip color (try

pastel looks by using orange shades at left (Nyx Vivid Brights Crème Colour in Cyberpop on the eyes and Make
