I. Objectives

a. To determine the suitability of reinforcing steel bars for concrete reinforcement

by performance of tensile test using ASTM Designation A370.

b. To determine the grade of steel bars.

c. To determine a concrete mix that can withstand a load

d. To better understand the used of UTM

II. Introduction

Tensile test is one of the basic tests that can be performed in a material. It

measures the capacity of a material until it gets deformed or break by an applied

tension or force. In this experiment, two specimens, one plain round steel bar

and one deformed round steel bar were to be tested using the Universal Testing

Machine. They are subjected to receive a specific amount of load given by the

machine until they break.

The results of the test can be easily interpreted using the stress-strain

diagram that would be produced after the experiment. From there, it would be

able to understand where and when the specimen experienced the lower yield

point, upper yield point, maximun strength and breaking point. Additionally, it

may determine the specimens whether they have structural grade, intermediate

grade, or hard grade that would tell if it is good enough for some specific

applications

3
III. Theory/Hypothesis

Tensile stress or tension is a stress state prompting expansion that is, the length

of a material is likely to elongate in the elastic direction. The volume of the

material remains the same. Whenever equal and inverse forces are applied on a

material, at that point the stress due to this tension is called tensile stress.

Concrete is a composite material that is made up of aggregates, it could be

fine and coarse, cement, and bonded together by water. This composite material

hardens over a long period of time depending upon the amount of water used.

Also, concrete is considered as the most popular artficial material on earth due to

the process on how it is made. By the process of hydration, the concrete absorbs

the water present in the mixture and gains strength causing the hardening of the

cement which hold the mixture altogether, serving as the glue.

IV. Discussion

TERMS Concrete and Materials Testing Laboratory Inc. is an Engineering

and Construction Laboratory established on April 2003. TERMS whose main

objectives are INTEGRITY&HONESTY, was ready to provide standard

Laboratory Testing services to the Construction Industry. TERMS strives to

provide the highest quality and cost efficient services by investing in highly

technical equipment. Our employees are handpicked for their experiences,

4
commitment and integrity. They have wide range of experiences within the

industry and can work cohesively as part of professional team. To achieve

Honest Quality Control in Construction Project, for the advancement of the

Construction Industry in this country, TERMS recognizes the tight deadline for

the work and test in every construction project. To ensure the preciseness of

test report, the Management exercise internal control procedures and applied

the most current means of software for all Documentation, Management and

Communication.

V. Conclusion

Tensile test is a method to determine a material’s strength in resistance to

an applied force. After performing the test using ASTM Designation A370, it

can be infer that both specimens are acceptable for concrete reinforcement

because they both got a grade of higher than 100 which is the minimum

requirement for steel bars

Mak-Ban has been a well-behaved geothermal field for the past 30 years.

The successful operation of the field is attributed to sound reservoir management

and effective partnership with the customer, the community and other business

partners. For both new wells and existing wells, a major reservoir concern for

Mak-Ban is mitigating the effects of the influx of cooler marginal fluids with

higher field extraction rates. Engineers and scientists are evaluating several

5
approaches to the problem with a view towards sustaining the remarkable

performance of the Mak-Ban field for decades to come.

VI. Recommendation

I recommend may be found useful in quality control, acceptance testing and

in testing for some types of suspected imperfections. Hardness methods are not a

substitute for destructive tests but more a useful additional or complementary

method to such tests. Their principal advantage is the ease with which the tests

can be carried out, the low cost of the devices and the rapidity with which a large

number of tests can be obtained. They provide a way of testing a concrete in a

structure or structural element but are insufficiently accurate on their own if the

concrete is of unknown composition.

I recommend that develop a state drilling program as part of the state energy

plan. Put together set of criteria that helps rank and prioritize projects throughout

the state. Consider ground source heat pumps in areas where appropriate. The

remote location of a number of geothermal resources relative to population

centers and transmission grid is a difficult hurdle to overcome.
