Board in the ongoing council elections
says Puketapapa needs better transport linkages,

businesses and affordable housing and these
are the key areas of focus for him this Election.
In a conversation with The Indian Weekender,
Shail Kaushal tells about his election campaign,
the public’s feedback and his vision for
Puketapapa Local Board.
¡ What are the key points you are
¡IWK:
conveying to your voters?
Shail: This election is important it’s about the
future of our city and here in Mt Roskill we
have achieved significant progress, but there
is more to be done. I need your support to
continue working for a better Roskill, that is
well-lit and safe, environmentally sustainable,
and with accessible public transport.
¡¡ IWK: How involved are you with the
community before and during this cam-
paign?
Shail: I have been passionately involved in
serving the community for the last nine years,
and more recently as an elected member
since 2016, I have been taking and resolving
constituent and community issues. Besides that,
I have been volunteering with Citizens Advice
Bureau and patrolling the streets of Mt Roskill
at night with the Mt Roskill Community Patrol.
¡¡ IWK: What changes do you intend to
bring in the Puketapapa area?
Shail:

linkages to and from Mt Roskill;
• ensure we have a well-designed and
modern transport system that includes
light rail down Dominion Road;

hosted its first T20 cricket
tournament earlier last week
in Christchurch participated
by three cities in which the Auckland
team came victorious.
New Zealand Tamil Sports
Association was launched last
year looking at the overwhelming
appetite of different sports activities
amongst young Tamil community in
New Zealand.
This year the tournament was
hosted in Christchurch on Saturday
and Sunday, September 28 and 29
and three teams namely, Auckland
Tamil Warriors, DTS Lions from
Dunedin and CanTamil Super Tigers
from Canterbury participated in the
tournament.
New Zealand Tamil Sports
Association in the coming years is
aiming to draw more Tamil teams
from Auckland, Christchurch,
Dunedin, Hamilton, Wellington and
few other cities to take part in this
tournament backed by the respective
Tamil societies.
The tournament was welcomed
by the members of all communities
in ChCh that was attended by over
100 people as audience and Jimmy

Quite frankly, it’s this efficiency
compared to every other nation
that shows just how vital our food
producers are to the world. If we
weren’t producing at the rate we are
then another less sustainable producer
would simply take that market share
and global emissions would rise while
our export revenue drops.
This crisis of confidence needs
to turn around and the Government
needs to wake up and put our primary
sector at the forefront of its policy.

this summer between the Black Caps and India,
twice during the Auckland Anniversary long
weekend.
The Indian cricket team is scheduled to visit
New Zealand in summer this year to play two
Tests, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and
five Twenty20 International (T20I) matches.
The interest within the cricketing fans and
the Kiwi-Indian community towards this
series, and in particular the two consecutive
T-20 contests planned in Eden Park during the
Auckland Anniversary long weekend, which
also coincides with India’s Republic Day
celebrations, is already up the roof.
“My wife is a nurse and most likely to be at
work during that long weekend and given that
we will be unable to get away from Auckland
there is nothing better than going to watch
cricket with friends and family,” Jagan Pillai
a cricket enthusiast told the Indian Weekender.
Akshay Golwala, a tertiary student who has
been in the country for less than a year and
works part-time in an advertising company, is
looking forward to the Auckland anniversary
long weekend for the first opportunity to watch
cricket between two of his favourite teams at
the iconic Eden Park stadium.
“I have grown up watching cricketing contest
being played at Eden Park stadium in our
television sets back in India,” Akshay said.
“Watching cricket matches being played in
New Zealand on our television sets in India,
most of the time required waking up very early
in the morning that almost all cricket fans
would recall fondly.”
“I am really excited to be eventually watching
a match live in Eden Park stadium this summer,
and the offer of having an India festival in and
around the stadium to coincide with Republic
Day will be an added incentive,” Akshay said.
There is much anticipation in the community
that the currently under-progress resource
consent application process will eventually
bring the good news for the sporting fans.
Eden Park is seeking resource consent from
the Auckland Council to be able to host the
cricket match on a Sunday night, first time ever
in their more than hundred-year-old history.
The final hearing of the resource consent
application is scheduled for Tuesday, October
8, when the commissioner will mull upon on
an earlier released Council’s 42A report that
has recommended that “the application be
consented to, subject to certain conditions.”
The hearing report was released on
Friday, September 13, which revealed that
overwhelming 96 per cent submissions had
favoured the Sunday night contest on January
26, with only 27 submitters voicing opposition
against the match.
Eden Park is New Zealand’s largest stadium
and has been the home of Auckland Cricket
since 1910 and Auckland Rugby since 1925,

However, lately, the stadium has come under

Local election postal deadline approaching

oting closes at midday on 12 October,
but voters now have less than a week
to post their ballot papers if they want
to make the postal deadline.
Auckland Council General Manager
Democracy Services Marguerite Delbet is
urging voters to act now.
“People need to post their voting papers by
Tuesday 8 October to ensure they make it to
the Electoral Officer on time.
“If people do miss the postal deadline, they
can still drop their papers at a ballot box or
a One Stop Shop.”
There are dozens of ballot boxes across
Auckland, including at libraries, Auckland
Council service centres and Britomart train
station.  Voters can simply type their address into
the elections website, voteauckland.co.nz, to

of legend as he tried freeing India from the yoke

uckland’s biggest Navratri celebrations
that host ten days of continuous garba-

will run until Tuesday, October 8.
Navratri is one of the most auspicious periods
of the Hindu calendar in which devotees visit
temples, conduct special pujas, observe fasting
and celebrate the occasion with dance and
music events.
Auckland Indian Association Inc. organises
the ten-day Navratri celebration at Mahatma
Gandhi Centre that is attended by thousands
every night starting Sunday, September 29 until
Tuesday, October 8.
“This year we have had a huge response and
footfall in almost all days of the event given that
the school holidays are going on and it gives the
family more time and liberty to attend Navratri
event and stay till late,” president of Auckland
Indian Association Inc. Narendra Bhana told
The Indian Weekender.
The highlight of the event, adding to the
massive presence of the men, women and
children are four renowned performers who
travel from India every year to entertain the
attendees.
This year the four performers from India
are Ketan Patel, keyboard player who has
performed in Wellington for the past three
years, singer Dinesh Patel who also performed
in Auckland last year, Tabla player Bhavesh
Patel and Rupal Nayak, a famous singer who
has performed in several high-profiled events
and concerts in different parts of India.
“As per ourtradition every year,we have these
performers from India who bring enormous
energy to the auditorium as the audience does
rounds of different dances in the Gandhi hall till
late in the night,” Mr Bhana added.
Two things besides the entertainment that
draws thousands to the ten-day event are the
convenience of parking and delicious and
hygienic food cooked in the Mahatma Gandhi
Centre kitchen.
“We have ushers to help people park their
vehicles, ample space to park cars in the
Mahatma Gandhi Complex (front and rear side)
and enough street parking in close proximity to
the event hall.
“Our food is prepared by highly talented
chefs in a hygienic kitchen environment and is
served at an affordable price to the visitors.
“Our dining hall is also equally huge as the
performance hall where people can roam freely,
sit any place of their convenience with their
friends and family and enjoy the delicacies,”
Narendra Bhana added.
Children’sGarba will be held on Saturday,
October 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Senior
Citizen Garba on Sunday, October 6 from 2
p.m. to 4 p.m. and entry to both these events are
free to the public.

aree’s known as one of the oldest
Indian traditional outfit of India. Also
considered as one of the most beautiful
outfit of the world reason being it defines
beauty and elegance. My favourite, colors for
this season has been purple and gold.
Purple never goes out of style, it can be
dressed up and down will all colors. It is a
vibrant color and perfect for special occasions.
Purple sarees easily stand out in crowd.
The specific design I went with for this saree
is chiffon light purple and gives a shine of
pearl in light. With the use of right accessories,
you can create an amazing look for the saree.

The blouse
The blouse I created for this was diamante
bra style just went perfectly with the sheer
purple and brought the plain chiffon saree to
life the contrast colors on the stone work really
brought details to this look
Pleats
Pleats of saree depends on the material. If
silk you can have pleated pallu or loose pallu,
since the saree I designed is chiffon for this
look we went with loose pallu, for me this
created the party and ultra-modern look.
Jewellery
Jewellery creates a bold statement; large
gold earring and bangles were used to create
an elegant minimalistic look. We added the
aviator to this look to create a modern trendy
style chick. This style can be worn during day
time parties. The use of Golden heels was
certainly accompaniment to the outfit.

hink Sholay and you are thinking Jai-
Veeru, Thakur or Gabbar Singh. The
fact we often tend to gloss over is
that a major reason why Ramesh Sippy’s all-
time blockbuster has continued to grow in
the collective consciousness of Indian movie
buffs over the decades is also the assortment of
minor characters in the story.
When Salim-Javed wrote Viju Khote’s
Kaalia, Macmohan’s Sambha, Jagdeep’s
Soorma Bhopali, Asrani’s Angrezon ke
zamaane ke jailer, Keshto Mukherjee’s
Hariram nai, AK Hangal’s Rahim chacha or
Leela Mishra’s Basanti ki mausi, these would
have been essential props essential to carry the
story forward, and to create relief in the plot
through humour, drama or sorrow.
Yet, over time, each of these characters have
not only become as endearing as the film’s
protagonists, they have also virtually come to
be the calling cards of the actors that portrayed
them.
Take Kaalia, for instance, essayed by Viju
Khote – the affable Marathi veteran who
passed away owing to multiple organ failure
on Monday at the age of 77.
Khote’s profile as an actor would seem
accomplished enough even without Sholay.
He was a scion of an accomplished family
of artistes – his elder sister Shubha Khote is
an actress, their father Nandu Khote was a star
of the stage and the silent movie era. Nandu
Khote’s sister-in-law was the acclaimed actress
Durga Khote.
Over a career spanning half a century, Khote
had made his mark in Hindi films, as well as
the worlds of Marathi stage and screen. In
Bollywood, his popular line Galti se mistake ho
gaya as the scheming butler Robert in the 1993
cult slapstick Andaaz Apna Apna continues to
be popular even today, as does his role in the
popular nineties sitcom, Zabaan Sambhalke.
Yet, every talk of Viju Khote will primarily
always begin and end with mention of Kaalia,
one of Gabbar Singh’s chief cronies whose

cashing in on the idea of comicbook cinema.
And to create a comicbook impact, you need
a lot of characters that lend to animated action
and drama.
Ramesh Sippy’s film was positioned as a
curry western, a genre that did not have any
notable precedence in Bollywood till before
August 15, 1975, when Sholay released. Like
the Hollywood westerns of Sergio Leone
before its time or Clint Eastwood, who was
carrying on strongly with the genre around
the time, Sippy had crafted a foolproof drama
package primarily driven by the machismo of
gunslinguing men on horses.
The violence, high by Bollywood standards
back then, had to be balanced out with lighter
moments of love and humour.
The heroes would take care of the love factor
himself - since romance has traditionally been
in sync with the idea of machismo. The smaller
characters were needed to justify a comicbook
punch of humour.
Since the heroes, as well as the villain of the
piece, were part of a heavy text of vengeance,
the sidekicks were essential to generate the
occasional diversion of comedy.
Back in the seventies, minor characters
inserted in a screenplay for comic relief was a
commonplace idea in mainstream films. Sholay
stands out among the numerous other films that
lucratively tried the formula because its minor
characters were exceptionally imagined.
They were realistic in essence, yet
comicbook in flavour. They were unlike any
others seen on the Hindi screen -- filling up the
frames around the core characters, keeping the
narrative busy in between the heavy drama.
Minor characters as Kaali and Sambha had
another significance. They wer used to define
the bigger characters.
Kaalia’s existence in Sholay, in this context,
is also meant to define an important aspect of
the film’s villain, apart from rendering quirky
dark humour.
They were realistic in
essence, yet comicbook in
flavour. They were unlike
any others seen on the
Hindi screen – filling up
the frames around the core
characters, keeping the
narrative busy in between
the heavy drama.
We understand Gabbar Singh’s ruthlessness
-- which exists to the point of being deranged.
Shortly after he has whiled away his time
playing a cruel little game with an ant and a
glass, Gabbar relishes in an ominous exchange
of dialogues with Kaalia that amply suggests
things coming up for the sidekick might not
be all pleasant. The consequence Gabbar then
reserves for Kaalia and the two other failed
dacoits is meant to tell us that Gabbar does not
tolerate failure.
Kaalia serves to generate a particular mood
in the film – one of quietly sinister dark comedy
– as we get to know Gabbar in that scene.
This mix of plot progession and mood
generation is apparent in the way other minor
characters have been used, too. Think of
Macmohan’s Sambha. Gabbar asks him to
remind the gang how much government prize
money rides on him. Poore pacchas hajaar,

Sambha dutifully informs.
In itself, that dialogue would seem lame
– a routine sentence devoid of any drama
whatsoever. Yet, when Sambha, seated on his
lone watch atop a hillock, delivers it, the line
crisply and effectlively underlines the menace
of Gabbar Singh as a criminal in society.
The one-sentence footage that Kaalia or
Sambha get have thematic importance. That is
the reason why they will continue to resonate,
as long as “Sholay” does.
Some minor characters exist solely to regale.
Think Leela Mishra as Basanti ki Mausi. She
shines in the one major convesation she gets,
with Amitabh Bachchan’s Jai, when the latter
goes to her with a marriage proposal for Hema
Malini’s Basanti, on behalf of his buddy Veeru
(Dharmendra).
Similar is the importance of Keshto
Mukerjee as Hariram nai, the barber-inmate
who is known to be the inhouse spy of the
jailer, essayed by Asrani, who in tunr brings
out the hilarious essence of a warden driven by
pre-Independence diktats.
The utility of Jagdeep’s tall-talking Soorma
Bhopali is also to create comic relief, while AK
Hangal’s Raheem chacha is the only character
whose duty is to create tearjerker melodrama.
These are all characters whose popularity
has only grown with time.
There is a quiet magic that binds all the
characters of Sholay into a cohesive whole, as
each of them – big or small – harmonises the
overall impact of every other
