Lesson Title: -At Family Grade: Kindergarten Student: Ms. Jasmine Vazquez
1. Objectives: CCSS.ELA-Literacy R.F.K.2.A (SWBAT) Recognize words that rhyme with –at words. Create words that are in the same –at word family. Students will be able to differentiate between words that are in different word families.
2. Materials and Preparation: • Computer connected to SMARTBOARD, Elmo, or projector. • Pictures that rhyme with –at file/document. • Student letter manipulative set (1 set per student or pair). • Rhyming word house (1 for each student). • Pencils/crayons or markers. • -at word Family Book. • Index cards (with one rhyming word written on each card). • Meet the Family worksheets.
3. Instructions: a. Introduction i. Introduce lesson with a warm-up of pictures that rhyme with – at. ii. Invite the students to name the words and to stand up if the words sound like cat. iii. Tell students they will be working on creating their own sets of rhyming words that belong in the same family.
b. Teacher Instruction i. On board or in your own set show how to create words with the manipulative set. ii. Show the house and how they will write their word in the house.
c. Student Activity i. Distribute student manipulative letters. ii. Call out various –at words that can be created with the letters. –an is also included, to help students differentiate between rhymes. iii. Have students practice forming the words using their letter as you call out the words. Walk around to check. iv. Distribute the word book family to each student v. Have students create words to match the pictures in the book and then write the corresponding letter beside each picture. Have student color the pictures. vi. Cut out and staple book. vii. For additional reinforcement provide the “at” Family worksheets.
d. Closure i. Evaluation: On family house have student create three words that go with the –at family (if needed they can use the letters). ii. Have student sit in a large circle. iii. Distribute 5 index cards to each student, with one rhyming word written on each card. iv. Place one card in the center and have them place one card each that rhyme with the card in the center
