With 2016 in full swing Rathdowne Place has wel-
comed a lot of new residents that I would like to extend a
warm welcome to, hope that you have settled into your
new surroundings and I am sure you have made new friends
here, Late last year, a select number of our residents had the
opportunity to participate in the Swinburne University Life
Stories Project. The end result of this project gave each resi-
dent and their families a memoir of their lives and all of their
accomplishments. I was very humbled to have had the op-
portunity to learn so much more about our residents. There
will be many more opportunities to participate in this pro-
ject in the future and I encourage all residents to take part.
In February, we bid 2 fond farewell to one of our
much loved employees, Mary Fromberger. Mary was the
Care Manager here since October 2014 and has helped
shape the “Better Together” model to what itis today. Mary
will be sadly missed by staff and residents alike. Please join
me in wishing Mary well in her retirement. However, as one
door closes another opens and I am pleased to announce the
appointment of Jade McGaw to Care Manager. Jade has
been with Rathdowne Place from the set up stage and has
been instrumental in ensuring admissions for our residents

In early February, our very own level four Senior Care
Partner, Gregor Poole put forward a new medication ini-
tiative. Gregor's initiative has been instrumental in the
steep decline of medication errors. The medication initia
tive sees medication rounds split up into five sections,
with one Care Companion overseeing one section each.
When Care Companion’s are completing their medica-
tion rounds, all additional tasks and responsibilities are
delegated to another staff member to avoid any interrup-
tion throughout this time. Main medication rounds com-
‘mence at 8,00 and 20.00 hours respectively, with supple-
mentary medication rounds occurring at 12.00, 14.00,
16.00 and 18.00 hours, This trial has been immensely suc-
cessful, and we encourage all to forward their congratu-
lations to Gregor for his continuing excellence here at
Rathdowne Place. As of the end of March, all levels are
officially on board. Please forward all queries to the your,
level's SCP in the first instance or alternatively Kimber-
ley Miller or Jade McGaw,
have ran smoothly from then onwards. Please join me in
congratulating Jade in her new role.
We have had some excellent feedback received via
our staff survey recently. The survey was conducted in No-
vember 2015 and I am very pleased to say that overall our
staff value working at Rathdowne Place and find it to be a
positive, safe, supportive and rewarding environment. Even
though our results are excellent we will continue to strive
toensure our staff are engaged, recognised and rewarded for
the care they provide our residents.
There is a renovation update that I would also like to
share with you that will affect all areas of Rathdowne Place.
We are currently completing works in the ceiling cavity on
each floor that will cause some minor disruption to our resi-
dents. We are working closely with our builders to ensure
this disruption is at a minimum and ensure the safety of all
Rathdowne Place staff and residents. I will keep you posted.
‘on when and where these works will take place when the
plans are confirmed.
In other exciting news Rathdowne Place has hit
100% occupancy for the first time since we opened in May
2014. This is due to the hard work of all staff as most of our
new residents have come on board due to word of mouth
which is very satisfying,
Again welcome to all of our new residents and staff,
am sure you will love it here as much as I do.

Wellbeing Clinic
Rathdowne Place and Swinburne University continue to
offer the services of the Wellbeing and Shared Care Pro-
grams, designed to accommodate the needs of our residents,
families and carers, These programs are now led by Jencie
Castle, Provisional Psychologist. The criticality of Jencie's
role is to ensure that we provide a holistic model of care to
our residents. Referrals don’t always mean that.a resident
will be assigned a counsellor as, in some instances, the Be-
friending and Volunteer Program may be better suited.
These extensions to our offer ensure that you, the resident,
is provided with as many opportunities to engage in activi-
ties that suit your needs and expectation, including quiet
time away from your community.

Life Stories Project
A series of residents across the facility participated in the
Life Stories Project.,a Swinburne University Student initia-
tive. Residents and their families detailed their life journey,
allowing under and post graduate students to capture these
‘memoirs in print, video and audio.
Again, Rathdowne Place will be working with Swinburne
‘University. We have had a wonderful response from resi-
dents wishing to participate, which will also include an
opportunity for residents to volunteer for their finished
product to be showcased in an exhibition at Rathdowne
Place.
Ifyou are interested in telling and sharing your story, please
speak with Jencie Castles
via jcastles@australianunity.com.au or call on 03 92407450.
The exhibition will be held later this year.
Day of Reflection
In recognition of our departed residents, Rathdowne Place
will hold a regular “Day of Reflection” to honor of those
that have passed away. The afternoon of observation is to
celebrate the life of our residents and to also allow their
community to respectfully farewell their neighbor. The af-
ternoon will commence with a short reflective service led by
minister and will then be followed by light refreshments.
Thank you to the Church Of All Nations and Minister
Rosemary Carter for conducting the Day of Reflection in
February,

In late September 2015, a select few team members were
invited to participate in a short leadership course. This
course was organised by LASA and facilitated by Anna
Mastwyk. It involved three intensive days over a 9 week
cycle, The course highlighted integral ideals of what con.
stitutes the most successful leaders, including strategies
and concepts to build and cement our foundation of
skills. One concept that rang true with many of the par
ticipants was the idea of ‘emotional intelligence’. We, as
leaders, often overlook how our stress and personal prob
lems outside of work may impact on our colleagues. A
reminder to implement emotional intelligence into our
day to day lives is fundamental
