‘Moving into the depths of winter we have had a lot
of change at Rathdowne Place, in particular our new
retirement community, The Residences. With over
90 apartments within the new building we currently
have over a third occupied and will be well over half
full by the end of August 2017. I would like you all to
join me in welcoming all of our newest residents to
the Rathdowne Place Precinct.
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to all
new residents of our aged care and to all staff that
have recently joined our team. I hope you have all
settled into your new environments
Rathdowne Place has also had some fantastic
celebrations since our last newsletter which
includes our Cultural Diversity Festival where
Elizabeth Blandthorn, MP State Member for Pascoe
Vale and Kevin McKoy, CEO Independent and
Assisted Living Australian Unity officially unveiled
the courtyard artwork. The day also saw a lot of
colour through staff and residents’ dressing up to
represent their country of origin.
In April we celebrated Easter and also honoured our
fallen with an ANZAC day ceremony that included a
bugler playing the Last Post. More recently we
hosted a very successful open day where over 200
people came through The Residences and looked
through the available facilities and apartments, All
functions were well catered for by the excellent
catering team led by Lorin Jacobs our Executive
Chef.

Fdel Wignell, a successful author,
grew up on a sheep farm near Echuca
and was the second eldest of five
daughters. Edel started her career as
a teacher, firstly teaching primary for
eight years and then moving to teach
ata teacher's college for a further
seven years, It was here where Edel’s love of writing
blossomed. She first started writing for teachers’
journals and various articles for newspapers such as
the Age and West Australian and an array of
magazines,
After a number of articles were published, a friend
suggested to Edel to try her hand at writing for
children. Along the way to writing children’s books,
she wrote non-fiction, poetry, scripts and short
stories for children, Her career has seen her publish
100 books, mostly for children, but alsoa number
for adults,
Edel’s inspiration comes from her vivid imagination
and everyday experiences, The Car Wash Monster,
which is one of Edel’s children's books published in
1986, came out of a time she took her two young
nieces to a car wash for the first time. Their terror
and delight influenced the writing of this book.

A recent addition to Edel’s
collection of story books is Bilby
Secrets, published in 2011, which
was the result of her interest in
Australian animals and those that
are likely to become extinct. This
children’s book is one of Edel’s
more popular publications. Her
book was illustrated by Mark
Jackson and she believes his
splendid illustrations helped add
another layer of enjoyment for
children.
Edel also finds inspiration for
writing through interests of her
own, such as Christina’s Matilda which is a picture
story book she wrote for ages 10-16. This book came
from her fascination in the creation of the song
Waltzing Matilda. Edel researched the history behind
the song to better explore the historical aspects for
her story.
Fdel says that the most rewarding aspect of writing
for children is the thought that somewhere a child is
reading a book and closes it with a sigh of
satisfaction or a chuckle.
