Comprehension Questions.
1. What is the author warning us about?

The author (Rachel Carson) wanted to warn us about our actions that could destroy our
environment and could also be the cause to the fall of humanity.

2. Why do you think Carson titles it "A Fable for "Tomorrow"? Think about the choice of words
in the title.

The word "fable" is in the title because Carson used some animals in the text to express
her thoughts and to teach us a valuable lesson. She also used an imaginary setting in the text.
Also the word tomorrow was used to address future generations about phenomenon that might
occur in the near future if we do not put stop on our bad actions.

3. What "evil spell" could have settled on and silenced the community.

The "evil spell" is just a metaphor used to describe an illness caused from our actions and
brought destruction to the environment.

4. How could the people have brought this destruction on themselves?

To what we have understood, the destruction mentioned in the text were all rooted from
the "evil spell" that settled in the town. As stated in our previous answer, the "evil spell" is only
a metaphor used to describe an illness caused by out wrong doings. In other words we are the
caused of all these destructions and in the end, we are the ones who suffers the consequences.

5. What do you think are the effects of the blight?

The blight caused a mysterious maladies that swept the flocks of chicken; cattle and
sheep sickened and died. There were several sudden and unexpected deaths among adults and
children. Trees also began to fail to bare fruits and plants and vegetation withered. And, silenced
the rebirth of new life.

6. When does the story shift? Think how the author's description changes.
We have observed that the story shifted in the third paragraph when Carson stated "So
it had been from the days many years ago...". It only means that those idyllic settings were all
part of the past and it became worst and different as the time goes by.

7. What caused the destruction of nature and outbreak of sickness?

It was all the worked of the "evil spell", rather it was us who caused the destruction of
nature and the outbreak of sickness.

Critical Thinking Questions

1. What side effect do you think Carson describing when she mentions; "They (the birds)
trembled violently" in the fourth paragraph?

The birds trembled violently because they were very sick and dying. It might also be
caused by toxic substances from chemicals we used that they accidentally intake.

2. Name one threat to the environment that worries you the most. What do you think can the
average individual do to deal with this threat?

We are all aware that throwing trashes everywhere can harm the environment, bu why
do we still continue to do so?

We all breathe the same air and for that as individual we should do our part in protecting
our environment. We could start by doing simple things, like throwing trashes in its proper place
and practice the 3 Rs; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

3. Is the town being describe by Carson real? Why or why not?

The town does not really exist but all the events mentioned in the text might be really
happening as of today.

4. Do you think that concerns of environmentalist/ecologist can be extreme and counter


productive? Explain you answer.

Environmentalist/ecologist are specialist who have higher knowledge about the


phenomenon happening in our environment. Therefore their concerns are not extreme nor
counterproductive because they know what is best food the environment and us.
