5.1 Preparation
After unpacking the system and reviewing the Safety and Description chapters of this manual, the
ProPanel MP21aa system is ready to be setup for operation. Setup instructions are provided in the
following paragraphs.
CAUTION
The ProPanel should be placed on its back (on the heat sink) or otherwise secured such that
the weight of the front panel does not cause the unit to fall forward and cause possible
personal injury or equipment damage when the panel is opened.
The ProPanel MP21aa weighs approximately 35 lbs (15.97 Kg), depending upon
configurations/options.
1. Remove the four type 2 Phillips head machine screws that hold the hood in place around the
front panel (Figure 4-2).
2. Remove the hood.
3. Remove the 20 type 2 Phillips head machine screws that attach the front panel to the body of
the enclosure (Figure 4-4).
4. Swing the panel open from right to left, like a door. Note that the panel is supported by two
hinges (Figures 5-1 and 5-2) that prevent the panel from misaligning when being opened or
closed and from opening too far and damaging the cables.
CAUTION
Do not open the front panel in an area where dust, water or dangerous gasses are present. The
unit should only be opened in a safe area free of contamination or the subsequent operation
and safety rating of the ProPanel may be compromised and the danger of explosion and/or
damage to personnel and equipment may exist.
HINGE
CAUTION
This unit must be installed with a disconnecting switch close to it, within 3 meters and easy
reach of the operator and compliant with the relevant parts of IEC 60947-1 and IEC 60947-3.
It must be marked to indicate this function and show ON and OFF positions. Wiring should
conform to local codes.
CAUTION
Only the live conductor has an internal equipment fuse. European regulations recommend that
fuses be fitted in both the line and neutral of the mains supply to the unit.
The value of fuse to use for the external disconnect for this unit must be between 7A and 10A,
or alternatively the power provided to the unit must be fed from a supply which is fused
between 7A and 10A.
When connecting to an AC power source, use 18 AWG wire for the line and neutral and 14 AWG
wire for the ground (earth). When connecting the optional heater AC power source, use 18 AWG
wire for the line and 14 AWG wire for the ground (earth). When connecting to a DC power
source, use 14 AWG or larger wire.
ELECTRICAL
HAZARD
The risk of serious electrical shock exists when wiring the MP21aa system. The system should
only be wired by qualified personnel. Do not turn on the power source(s) until the system is
completely wired, solidly grounded and setup as described in this chapter.
To prevent electrical shock, the Safety Earth Ground stud on the rear, as indicated by the
symbol above, must be made to the local safety ground through a minimum 14AWG wire.
4. Connect the nearest earth wire to the GROUND (Earth) stud. See Figure 4.3 for GROUND
(Earth) stud location.
5. Tighten the gland nut securely over the cable outer sheath.
6. Close and secure the Maintenance I/O Plate.
If heater power is to be provided through a separate power cable, procure and install a second
gland in the spare hole located directly below the main power gland.
Install the heater power cable in the same way as the main power cable. Connect the heater power
cable as follows:

The Maintenance I/O Access plate, shown in Figure 5-3, is hinged for quick access. There are
two spare plugged gland holes on the plate. The plate provides access to:
• One RJ45 Ethernet connector
• Two PS-2 keyboard and mouse non-isolated connectors
• One USB Port connector
• One RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 isolated COM port (mating connector: Phoenix P/N 1803646)
• Power ON/OFF rocker switch
• Power terminal block
The Standard I/O Access plate, shown removed in Figure 5-4, contains three spare plugged gland
holes. Removing the plate by unscrewing and removing the ten machine screws provides access
to internal periphery devices, including:
• One RS-232 non-isolated COM port
• Two PCMCIA Type II slots
• One 3.5 " floppy drive
• Two I/O plugs to accommodate PCI plug-in I/O cards

The following tables show the pinouts of the COM port No. 1 connectors. Pins are marked from 1
to 9 from left to right respectively.
If using the MP2105 (safe area) system, standard glands can be used for both the power and
signal cables.
If using the MP2100 or MP2110 (hazardous area) system, special glands must be used for the
power cables. Standard glands may be used for the signal cables.
Azonix recommends that the Hawke International A501 family of glands be used with the
MP21aa. The following glands can be suspplied by Azonix (part numbers listed).

SYSTEM POWER and HEATER POWER indicators are located on the left side of the
membrane keyboard, as shown in Figure 4-2.
CAUTION
Leave the covers in place at all times during operation. The covers protect the user against
high voltages inside of the unit and inhibit radio-frequency emissions that may interfere with
other devices or equipment. Leaving the covers open or loose will also compromise the
environmental sealing specification, as well as disabling features necessary to maintain its
hazardous area certification.
Figure 5-5: Empty PCI Card Area Showing Support Brackets Fastened to Tapped Holes,
Thumb Screws for Retaining Card Front Panels and PCB Connectors
There are two heaters in the system, one for the LCD and another for the hard drive. The
following table explains the different states that the system can be in at various temperatures:
1. The main system source can be used to supply power to the heaters. This is the default
connection when the system is shipped.
2. A separate power source can be used to supply power to the heaters. The system will
automatically detect the connection of two separate power sources and operate accordingly.
This technique is useful if the operator doesn't want the system to remain on at all times but
also doesn't want to wait for the system to warm up each time power is applied. If a separate
power source is used, the Heater Module will monitor the temperature and turn the heaters on
and off as required.
This technique also permits a user who uses a UPS for system back-up to connect system
power through the UPS and heater power directly to the power source, allowing the use of a
lower power UPS.
To connect separate power sources to the system, connect a separate heater cable as described in
Section 5.3.1.
In some applications, Azonix pre-installs the entire software package defined and released by the
customer. This service usually reduces installation time by the customer at the receiving location.
This brightness compensation results in less operator fatigue and better control. Also, because the
MP21aa compensates for changes in light conditions automatically, the operator can work
without distraction.
There may be occasions when the operator wishes to adjust the display intensity. During power
up, the display goes to maximum brightness for two minutes, then darkens to minimum for one
minute. During this cycle, the manual override controls are not operative.
After the power up and brightness cycles are complete, the operator can adjust display brightness
manually by pressing the UP and DOWN arrow keys on the left end of the membrane keyboard,
as shown in Figure 4-1. This adjustment will be in effect only during the current power-on cycle
for a few minutes; the setting will not be stored.
Another of the MP21aa user-definable functions is the ability to adjust display brightness to stay
constant. This is accomplished by covering the light sensor. It is circular in shape and about 4 mm
in diameter. After covering the sensor (for instance, with a piece of masking tape), the arrow keys
can be used to set the brightness to the desired intensity.

the original shipping container.
CAUTION
It may be necessary to temporarily remove the cable glands and horn
from the bottom of the enclosure to pass it through the panel cutout.
5. Screw all of the remaining nuts, with flat and lock washers, on to the studs and repetatively
tighten the nuts securely such that the panel is not deformed as the nuts are tightened.
Refer to the illustration below for wall mounting dimensions. Mounting holes must be provided
by the user. Follow the procedures below:
1. Locate a space on the desired surface which is capable of accepting the four ¼-20 mounting
bolts required to hang and which can support the weight of thr MP21aa.
2. Drill and tap the holes using the dimensions shown in Figure 6-7 below.
3. Screw in the top two bolts, leaving their heads about ¼-inch from the wall.
4. Hang the MP21aa on the top two bolts by slipping the keyholes over the heads of the bolts and
then slide the MP21aa down until the tops of the keyholes are resting on the necks of the bolts as
illustrated in Figure 6-8.
Azonix offers these actions as Maintenance Level B as part of its training program along with a
training manual given to participants who successfully complete the program and organizations
who will sign an agreement governing the requirements of these actions.
Azonix recommends following basic maintenance practices of the MP21aa product to sustain its
specified performance. The MP21aa workstations is an extremely rugged system, requiring very
little maintenance. But despite its ruggedness, any piece of electrical equipment should be
handled with care and used according to its specifications.
Only trained authorized personnel can troubleshoot and replace Azonix certified sub-assemblies
within the system without voiding the certification. Azonix offers courses on training customer
field personnel in the proper installation of replacement parts in certified Azonix products. Such
training will assist customers in assuming the responsibility for such replacements in the field. To
schedule such training, contact the Azonix Corporation at 866-929-6649 or visit our website at
www.azonix.com."
• Use care when handling the flat-panel display. The flat-panel display is glass and
