Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Modern technology is continuously evolving, and in recent times, it has

manifested itself in a very serious social problem, namely Cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones,

computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or

online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in,

or share content. In Malaysia, according to Faryadi (2011), that cyber bullying

affected students academically as well as emotionally. Ninety-five percent of the

participants (95%) denoted that they were scared and worried about cyber

bullying in the classrooms.

In Manila, Philippines cases of cyberbullying have been increased by 70.74

percent in the year 2016. A total of 782 cases were reported to the Philippine

National Police-Anti Cybercrime Group (ACG) in 2016, significantly higher than

the 458 incidents recorded in 2015. A majority of the cases involved online libel

with 498, an increase of 60.12 percent compared to the previous year’s 311

cases. Next is online threat which increased by 96.22 percent, 106 cases in

2015.Meanwhile, 30 cases of abuse of minors under Republic Act 7610 were in

2016, a 275 percent increase compared to just eight cases in 2015. For the first
quarter of 2017, the ACG has recorded 142 cases of online libel, 41 online

threats, 10 incidents of unjust vexation and four cases of child abuse. One of the

victim of this crime is Carly Hernandez, a student-athlete in Far Eastern

University women’s volleyball team. She said that “Cyberbullying can cause

negative psychological, academical effects and harm to any individual, private or

public."Tupas (2017).

In Davao City, a Fifteen-year-old Thalia (real name withheld) has been

bullied online. Recently, she had to shutdown all her accounts online like

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. A very rare experience for a teener like her.

According to Dr. Nelly Z. Limbadan, a clinical psychologist and an associate

professor at the Ateneo de Davao University explained the concept of

cyberbullying, saying, “Bullying has been there for the longest time because it is

a product of the traditionally accepted violence and aggression, and then, na-

transfer siya sa classroom or any group of people na together. Cyberbullying is

all the concepts under bullying, ginawa in cyberspace.”

In University of Mindanao Bansalan College, there are a lot of victims of

cyberbullying. But many of these are not reported due to considering

cyberbullying as a traditional accepted violence. We all know that cyberbullying

and bullying have resemblance, because it is a learnt behavior and not an innate

characteristic of anyone. Prof. Divina Orge, guidance counselor in UM Bansalan

College said that there are reported bullying such as fighting inside the campus

due to provocation and fighting outside the campus due to name calling .

Through these facts, the researchers were interested to study the impact

of cyberbullying to the academic performance of the senior high school victim

because we wanted to know how cyberbullying damage the psychological

thinking of the victim, and the effects to the academic performance.
