Animal Reproduction

Reproduction is the ability of organisms to reproduce them selves. There are

2 types of reproduction :
1) SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
it involves the fusion of two specialized cells, a male cell and female
cell.

Sperm (male gamete)

Fertilization Zygote Embryo

(developing hatching animal)

Ovum (female gamete)
Birth

Animal Fertilization divided into :

a) Internal Fertilization
is that occurred in the female body. Example : mammals, reptile,
etc.

b) External Fertilization
is a fertilization occurred outside the body. Example : frog,
salmon, catfish
Sexual reproduction can be done in three ways :
 Laying eggs (oviparous)
 Giving birth (viviparous)
 Laying eggs & give birth (ovoviviparous)

Task : Ask student to write the examples of an animal as much as possible

 Reproduction in many animals is heterosexual reproduction, meaning that
male and female reproductive organs are present on different animal. Most
mammals are heterosexual.
 Some of invertebrates is hermaphrodite, so they having both male and
female reproductive organs. Example : snails, sponge, roundworm.

2) ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
This reproduction is not involves reproductive cells, the offspring are
produced from only one parent.

The method :
a) Binary Fission
a process where are one cell divides to form two identical cells.

offspring

Parent offspring

Example : bacteria, amoeba

b) Fragmentation (or regeneration)

the parent organism can be divided into many pieces and each
piece will develop into a complete individual.
Example : planaria.

2
c) Budding
is a type of asexual reproduction in which a new organism
develops from an outgrowth / bud due to cell division at one
particular site. Example : hydra

d) Parthenogenesis
is a process where offspring / embryo grow and develop without
fertilization.
Example : Komodo, whiptail lizard

“Do jellyfish reproduce sexually or asexually??”

JELLYFISH LIFE CYCLE

Jellyfish reproduction involves several different stages. In the adult, or medusa, stage
of a jellyfish, they can reproduce sexually by releasing sperm and eggs into the water,
forming a planula. In this larval stage of jellyfish life, the planula hooks on to the bottom
of a smooth rock or other structure and grows into another stage of jellyfish life, the
polyp--which resembles a miniature sea anemone. During this stage, which can last
for several months or years, asexual reproduction occurs. The polyps clone
themselves and bud, or strobilate, into another stage of jellyfish life, called ephyra. It
is this form that grows into the adult medusa jell.
