CHAPTER THREE

METHOD OF RESEARCH

Preamble

This chapter focuses on the research method for this study. It would explain the research method
and justify its choice, it would examine the sampling size and procedure. Limitations would also
be discussed.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Content analysis was employed as the research design in order to identify the themes in Nigerian
home videos .

According to tejumaiye (2003), content analysis is one of mass communications greatest

contributions to social scientific inquiry because the technique is derived from the
communication science and has largely remained there.

McQuail (2000) defined content analysis as:

a technique for the systematic ,qualitative and objective description of media texts ,that is useful
for certain purposes of classifying output, looking for effects and making comparisons between
media and over time or between content and “reality”. content analysis is not well suited to
uncovering the underlying meaning of content , although it can provide certain indicators of
“quality” of media.

Content analysis is concerned with the coding of manifest content rather than latent content. In
relation to this research project, content analysis seems to be the most appriopriate research
method to be used. This is because the identification of themes in Nigerian home videos cannot
be achieved through any other means except through a careful, systematic and objective review
of manifest content of films.
POPULATION OF STUDY

All the home videos made by the Nigerian producers and approved by the Nigerian Film and
Censors board(NFVCB) constitute the population of study. The films that will be used will be
exclusively Yoruba movies which include- epic, comedy, tragicomedy amongst others

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE,SIZE AND PROCEDURE

Ten films will be carefully selected and watched .The sampling procedure involved a
combination of availability and purposive selection of home videos and the last thirty minutes of
the movies will be adopted for analysis.

DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS

A coding categorization will be developed to capture the variables such as type of films, themes,
settings(time),settings(location), themes, etc. these will be contained in the content categories.

CONTENT CATEGORIES

These are the variable the researcher intends to examine in the home video films. They include :
type of films , settings (location), settings (time), themes, buildings, culture. The content
categories will be mutually exclusive because a unit of analysis will be placed in each category.

CODING GUIDE

A coding guide will be created for this study consisting of serial numbers, variables, options,
value assignment and column as well as remarks, where applicable. The coding guide will help
in stardandizing the instrument for data gathering. hence, it will be useful for uniformity and
consistency
UNIT OF ANALYSIS

The unit of analysis for the study will be the settings, buildings, themes in the home videos
produced by the Nigerian film producers as approved by NFVCB . The last thirty minutes will be
content analysed.

VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY

Validity

This is the extent to which a measuring instrument measures what it is designed to measure. The
validity of the coding instrument will be examined by the supervisor who will be making useful
contributions to the coding guide.

Reliability

This is the ascertainment of whether the technique applied repeatedly to the same variable will
yield the same result each time. For the reliability of the instruments, the key variable will be
clearly defined; moreover three levels of measurement will be used- nominal, numeric and
percentages. The researcher will undertake a pilot study with the supervisor to refine the
measuring instruments( coding sheet and coding guide )used for the study and to ensure that the
measurement instructions were clear. The instruments(design design|)were then validated.

PROCEDURE FOR DATA GATHERING

Data was gathered through the careful watching and studying of the home videos which were
adopted by the researcher .data were inputted as nominmal values into the standard coding
sheet. Each column sheets stands for a variable while each row stands for subject. The researcher
will translate the information obtained from the home video into numerical data for analysis.

METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS

Data analysis will be done quantitatively. The data obtained from the home video will be
inputted at nominal values into standard coding sheets. They will be cross tabulated with relevant
variables. Frequency counts will be extracted from the coding sheet and converted into
percentages to aid the data analysis. Further interpretations will be made based on the date

LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

The review of the movies will be limited to the last thirty minutes because of available time for
the study hence ,the last thirty minutes of every of the ten movies will be adopted for this
research. The analysis of the movies will be limited to fewer variables. It is hoped that the
findings from this study will also be built upon in subsequent study.
